  • LEGO DC Supervillains is a strange game. When it released, fans weren't sure whether this was the "LEGO Batman 4" they had been expecting, or if it had any relation to the previous games at all. Today, let's examine LEGO Batman the Videogame, LEGO Batman 2 DC Superheroes, LEGO Batman 3 Beyond Gotham, and LEGO DC Supervillains to reach our conclusion.

The reason Gotham and Metropolis are so close together in DC Villains compared to Batman 2 is quite simple: Dimensions. They were literally slammed together and had to be majorly rebuilt. This would also explain the numerous design changes of the two cities.

    • @ShockwaveFPSStudios
      @ShockwaveFPSStudios 14 дней назад +2

In Dimensions, there was a reason for this. The Entire Multiverse was in chaos, and so Lord Vortech caused each of the dimensions to go down in global destruction.
However, most of the assets & designs of the architecture were the same as the ones seen in the 2nd & 3rd LEGO Batman Games. So there’s no way the citizens of Gotham & Metropolis would rebuild the buildings from the ground up.

I have a Lego Dimensions related theory:
When Lord Vortech ripped apart the multiverse, he caused cataclysmic events to occur in every Lego universe, including Lego DC, which had Gotham, Metropolis and Atlantis seemingly collide. However when the damage Vortech did to the multiverse was undone, the universes were probably repaired, but not fully the same.
I think the events of Dimensions were likely akin to a Crisis on Infinite Earths that caused the Lego DC universe to reboot.

    • @kfcfamousbowl

I would agree with this if it weren't for his Lego Batman Timeline video, where Lego Batman 3 is after Dimensions.
As stated and shown in this video, the opening cutscene of the first level of Lego Batman 3 shows the same Gotham as the one from Lego Batman 2. The same Wayne Tower, globe at the zoo, etc.
Then again, the after-credits scene in Dimensions shows someone else gaining Lord Vortech's powers, so perhaps he reshaped Gotham and Metropolis?

6:49 A answer I can pull from the comics is that in later years Bruce could've figured out that the man who fell into that vat of chemicals wasn't The Redhood as in Batman Zero Year we find out that a man named Liam Distal was Red Hood but was murdered by a man who later became The Joker.
So its possible that years later Bruce found out about Liam or at least found his corpse realized that whoever he fought on that catwalk wasn't even the leader but some unknown criminal.

There's also the fact that the villain profiles in this game AREN'T on the Bat Computer... They seem to be more of a police file or something. Maybe Batman knows the Joker's origins, but whoever wrote the profile didn't?

  • @joshuavis2736

I had a thought of my own reason behind the differences in jokers backstory between the games. The red hood backstory is logged in the batcomputer while the dc supervillains bio is in police files. Batman’s personal database is likely to be more accurate and extensive compared to GCPDs files so the contradiction is understandable

6:47 if I could throw my hat into the ring, I think there is a way to explain how both biographies for the joker could simultaneously work:
    1. When DC super villains biography states that “his true origin forever shrouded in mystery“ that technically doesn’t contradict the red hood origin because not even Batman knew who he truly was under that hood. we don’t know if he had a pregnant wife who tragically died, we don’t know if he was an enforcer for the mob, we don’t even know if his dad ever told him “let’s put a smile on that face”. All we know is that he had a red hood on when he met Batman and after falling into a chemical vet, he emerged as the joker. To me that sounds pretty mysterious.
    2. The red hood origin could just be one of the “multiple-choice” origins that joker has given out over the years and Batman has simply theorized that it is most likely to be true.
    3. The bios are not written from Bruce’s perspective, but instead, they are written from a meta-textual point of view. So they could both be accurate. The red hood story could be his true beginnings while at the same time no one knows that for sure.

  • @Wasdye

Batman registered the events with the Red Hood on the batcomputer, but he's the only one with that information
The biography in DC Super-Villains is from the prison records, so his origin is unknown for them
While in Batman 2, Vicki Vale says in one of her cutscenes that there were rumors about Joker having an accident in a makeup factory or smth
So Batman is the only one that knows the truth

The Supervillains game continues the story were the 3rd game stopped and teased with. So yeah it is canon.
In 1st game they couldn't do big characters like big characters yet, what they could later, so the Killer Croc changed look makes sense, heck if they make like a "Skywalker's saga" type game (but even better) than Killer Croc would be big all way through.
Either in comics Harley did go from her OG/better design 2 her more modern/worse design as well.
The 3 Joker's comic wasn't awful, just rushed. The current run have Joker with 3 personalities, what is dumb, as the Joker would have more and the Mobius chair would't say 3 distinct Jokers in that case.

While LEGO Batman 1 is definitely different compared to the 2nd & 3rd games, I should point out that the game came out in 2008, back when LEGO Games started to have more mumble as opposed to the voice acting that LEGO Island & the EA Developed LEGO Games had. So there’s a reason why it doesn’t have voice acting compared to its sequels.
I still think LEGO Batman 1 is still canon to the events to the 2nd & 3rd game, especially when it helps enhances Batman’s relationship with Robin and eventually the Justice League. He appears in a side quest, which implies that he is a part part of the Lego Batman video game universe at this point… But then Lois doesn’t seem to know that Clark Kent is Superman, which would be weird if they had a kid together at this point in time. (unless this is a Superman returns situation where Lois doesn’t know Clark is Superman, but Jonathan is the result of a one night stand)
This isn’t an issue with the overall timeline, I’m just curious how he can exist without Clark and Lois being together. Do you think he’s from the Multiverse? Is he even canon or can we write off the side quest as purely gameplay? Any thoughts?

The Atom is working with shrinking tech that he is salvaging from Brainiac's ship just before his boss fight, and immediately after that we get confirmation that the Watchtower still uses Slideways Teleporters to some degree, which I think are good indicators in the game slotting into canon as well.

The villain bio’s being different could be explained by the fact that in Batman you play as Batman and use his software, but with this criminal one’s it’s their in universe police files, further supported by the fact the bios are presented on a case file

Think 2 - Villains are canon while Batman 1 is sorta in its own thing, and that's just generally how different how Gotham looks between both games.
There's no mention of the league, so I believe Batman 1 is sorta just its own canon.

I don't think the Joker bio is a mistake at all, especially because all the other bios are so good.
I think generally TT realized that The Joker overall is a lot more interesting to most people if his origin is kept a mystery and always called into question.
You also gotta keep in mind the times when each game came out and how the current fandom saw things. Lego Batman 1 was pretty heavily tied to the animated series, and the animated series likewise was heavily tied to the 89 movie. And both showed very clear cut origins for the Joker, even if he wasn't the red hood in either
Yes the red hood is commonly accepted as Joker's previous moniker before his transformation in some way, but even that is up to dispute because the Joker is an inherently contradictory character. For many the appeal of Joker is his "multiple choice" backstory and fractured mind so having a clear cut "okay he was the criminal redhood before chemicals made him the joker" is VERY simple and definitive which simply doesn't align with what people like about The Joker anymore.
So no if anything this is an improvement and keeping up with the times.

In my opinion, yes. It is cannon. Tt putting the little details like the ice cream factory & deconstructor gun in along with it making no sense to make a new universe for a new game. As for Joker, I think they just wanted him to fit every version they could. Lego games feel like the pull from every source possible when creating their universe. Even if the Red Hood origin is the most common, there’s still going to be somebody who might want to imagine his origin aligned more with say, the telltale games, or any other piece of Batman media with the Joker. Harley isn’t a big deal either, even in her debut in the animated series she’s broken up & got back together with joker a million times, & I think she’s been solo act in the comics for some time now.

  • @Drawoon
    @Drawoon Месяц назад +1

I think Harley Quinn went solo for the same reasons she did in the comics, the birds of prey movie and the harley quinn animated show. Joker treated her badly. They probably didn't talk about it explicitly in the games because they didn't want to mention abuse in a game rated 10+.

  • @ToonyTails
    @ToonyTails 20 дней назад

I think the Joker being Redhood and have his identity being shrouded in mystery is possible simply due to the fact that no one knows who he was before he took up that mantle. They could be referring to his true identity not just his alias as the Redhood. Also for the Gotham and Metropolis being combined thing, both those cities were smashed together during the events of Dimensions. And with the 4 year gap between games, you could say they just rebuilt the 2 cites into what they are now.

The idea that because the designs and art style changed makes it not canon is ridiculous. It's based on comic books, specifically DC books. Batman and his friends and foes constantly change their designs. That Harley design is as recognizable, to me, as the original Bruce Timm one.

Red Hood is not contradictory to have his origins shrouded in mystery. In Killing Joke, the Red Hood and Comedian stories happen, but Joker still says his past is “multiple choice.” In New 52, He’s clearly Red Hood but it’s a mystery when Joker and the previous Red Hood leader, William “Liam” Distal, swapped. Then there’s New 52 Detective Comics 27 which seems to directly contradict the New 52 Snyder run, plus, even with the Red Hood origin, there’s multiple hints at Joker being a demon or some sortof supernatural entity throughout Snyder’s books.

My headcanon is that, considering LEGO Dimensions is canon, when the worlds were merged and Gotham and Metropolis forced into one another, the cities were rebuilt and left close to each other, with Metropolis being on higher ground due to the displacement of the ground when Lord Vortech mixed everything up.

A few little notes: with the maps being different, in lego DC Supervillains when walking in gotham some pedestrian says "Does gotham look different every couple of years or is it just me?" or something like that (it was last year i 100% the game so i don't really remember) and the character selector looks like files which may just be a design choice but the character biography makes me see it more, I believe that they arent what the bat computer knows but maybe what the police know? maybe because batman knows about redhood but who knows who the person keeping the files know? that last bits just a theory, but that line in the beginning proves that even if this game isn't canon to the previous games, maybe the previous games are canon to it? also in the deathstroke mission deathstroke says that theve worked together before, i don't know if that helps or not but ye.

the comics themselves can't decide if joker's origin is a complete mystery or if he was red hood. at the end of the day it's a kid's game tie-in
it bends with the times and current comic continuity, which is why the riddler bio is interesting. as far as im aware he was never a wayne tech employee outside of forever, which is obviously inspiration for the first game. why would they bother to add that detail if it wasn't connected

    Personally, I consider Canon.
For the designs, I I feel like you can write off different appearances as a stylistic/artistic choice. For example, killer croc started as a mini figure in this series, but ever since Lego Batman three he has been portrayed as a big figure because at that point in big figures came into existence, and the designers figure killer croc should be portrayed that way. Not to mention in some cases, they have to update the character designs to match what the current Lego sets are going for. That’s why Lego Batman three leaned into the new 52 style.
This is in the same category as other video games which update their character designs as later games are introduced. Just because Mario is now depicted in a high poly 3-D model doesn’t mean that it’s a different Mario from the classic 8-bit games.
As for the lore, I’d say there’s nothing in the game that can’t be explained away. I can easily see this being the progression from the already established Lego Batman game universe.
Also, Gotham and Metropolis being right next to each other can easily be explained away with dimensions where they were fused together into one city. They even referenced the name “Gothopolis” from flash’s Lego dimensions side quest.
