Something genius this film did in contrast to other Batman films is explore to its fullest _why_ Batman is a dark and brooding loner. It’s always been established that he is, but this film makes the direct connection that because he lost his parents, he’s scared of ever caring for anyone again in case they die too. It creates this incredible character motivation in this movie that isn’t really used elsewhere. Sure, he’s a loner who hates working with people, but the Lego Batman Movie says exactly _why._
The Lego Batman Movie was incredible and a nice surprise. Not mentioned in the video but the casting was on point for this as well, with Will Arnett and Michael Cera shining as Batman and Robin.
That scene when Batman comes home, spends his night alone in the most relatable moments ever captured on film of just the sort of mundane activities of microwave and watching a movie etc, then watches Jerry Maguire, realising he’s alone, and then laments to his dead parents. Its such a simple obvious scene that makes its point super clear, and hilariously cliche, yet wow it is somehow extremely emotional to watch. Gonna be honest, never expected to cry at a Lego Batman Movie.
This is like the only version of Batman who has objectively never killed anyone (even Battinson inadvertently killed at least someone during the chase scene when the Batmobile’s exhaust ignited that one truck).
@@BJGvideosBTAS Batman has killed at least one person. Sort of. There’s an episode of Justice League where Deadman possesses Batman’s body to shoot an assassin that was trying to kill one of the JL members, and while the shot hits a non-lethal body part, it throws the person into some exposed wiring and electrocutes him to death. Even though Deadman was controlling Batman’s body, Batman was VERY upset about the incident.
What really makes this movie so faithful is how Chris McKay paid homage to the rampant homoerotic tension between Batman and the Joker that is so prevalent through his countless adaptations.
The movie Kick-Ass (2010) actually made me think and believe that it's possible to make a Batman movie with Robin without compromising or losing all its dark and serious tone/theme.
For a time this was my all-time favourite Batman movie as a teen. This film just felt like a genuine love letter to the character and Will Arnett truly is underrated as Batman.
I absolutely loved it. I mean, I do like Lego and I thought it was cool that they did more with Lego Batman, but I was like, "Oh, wow! They mentioned THAT?" when they made all the references to other iterations over the years. And, as you said, they actually gave Batman something he's wanted for a long time: family. How often has he had to turn his back on it because it was too dangerous to open up to anyone other than Alfred? And it's always good to see Alfred hopping into action and helping to save the day.
I'm so glad I'm not alone in this! Lego batman was such a perfect incarnation of batman, both as a love letter to the character and a brutal satire of the dark edgy take. Batman needs a bat family, they really are what rounds out the character. I cannot express how clear the love for batman was in that movie. Excellent video
"The Most Faithful Batman adaptation ever". WTF? Really. What the even fuck? Lego Batman is not even close to being a most faithful Batman adaptation ever. It is just a parody of Batman, nothing more, nothing less. Check Batman Animated Series if you need more faithful Batman adaptation.
@@Qaosbringer The best parody comes from a deep love of whatever is being parodied. Yes, he's a parody but in this parody they make the single most complete conceptualization of the character. TAS is phenomenal and carrying basically that batman into justice league animated is so good. However, it only really touches on an aspect of a character that's almost a century old. It doesn't acknowledge how goofy the silly man in a bat costume can be, it doesn't take him to the depths of edge that he's descended into, it is more fantastical than the Nolan films but more grounded than the Adam west series. Kevin Conroy is and always will be the voice of batman in my mind because of those shows. TAS is an absolute timeless classic with many episodes that blow the Lego batman movie utterly out of the water in terms of quality. Lego batman came to be only because the creators clearly loved this character in his entirety and endeavored to take every aspect of that character into their adaptation. And, frankly, this is one of the few realms this works: a ridiculous world where a multitudinous batman fits right in. Lego batman is less a character in his own right and more a brutal condemnation of a few limited takes on the character (batman always wins, batman always works alone, batman is so dark and edgy, batman can't ever grow as a character) but he's also an incredible love letter at the same time. A take on this character that encapsulates more than any other take I've seen and embraces everything about him that multiple generations of people have come to love. So I'll absolutely agree that TAS is a much better work of art but Lego batman is the most faithful adaptation.
@@Qaosbringer Most faithful Batman adaptation is Adam West's Batman series, actually. Or the film of the videogame, LEGO Batman 2, which is incredibly accurate to the game.
@InfiniteSoulsin my opinion the lego ninjago movies really good on its own. If it was cannon to ninjago it would have been hard for people unfamiliar with the show to understand whats going on, making the target audience pretty small. I also enjoyed seeing a different take on ninjago and for the most part I loved their redesigns. AND! without it we wouldn't have gotten the MASTERPEICE that is the oni trilogy
@@coolboy2256It's crazy how the Ninjago Movie (which was kinda mediocre, in my opinion) indirectly led to two of the greatest Ninjago seasons of all time.
As a big batman fan, this movie is so incredibly good. I hope we get another movie like this in 20 years to recap the following decades of batman visual media.
Thanks @Nerdstalgic for this deep dive into our movie. Every single one of us on the show was an enormous Batman fan, and most of all Chris McKay, who I have to say knows the most about Batman and is (secretly) Batman when no one is looking. 😊
Its always great when Directors direct a film to something they can relate such as Chris Mckay who actually grew up watching and liking Batman. He actually knew the lore and added some villians that only appeared in the comics and not in live action movies
1:48 If i had a nickel for every time audiences thought a lego animated movie would be a cash grab only to be pleasantly surprised, I'd have two nickles. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice
My dad has been a Batman fan ever since he watched the Adam West show a kid. And all these years later, if you ask him what is his favorite Batman film, he will always point to this one
The movie felt like a love letter to Bruce Timm's work on Batman in particular. The animation was excellent, and the characters were all understood perfectly... but the crew just couldn't help teasing a Batman and batgirl couple.
5:52 I mean. In at least some versions Bruce actually tried to stop dick from doing crime fighting but he just couldn’t so he chose to teach him how to not get killed
The first Lego movie was a very pleasant surprise and I had doubts, that any sequel, even if just loosely based, could touch it (Corporate greed and so on), but the Lego Batman movie was a treat from start to finish. It showed me, that people and even big movie studios can still make good movies in the 21st century!
This movie is hilarious and amazing. On a side note though, it's actually crazy how Lego and Warner Brothers made one of the most loyal Batman films ever yet in the same year, made a Ninjago movie that barely has any semblance to the show it came from.
Thank you for this essay. I couldn’t agree more. My favorite moment in the movie comes toward the end, when Bruce takes off the cowl in the moments before he is to go to the Phantom Zone, and he still holding it when he hugs Robin, but it’s only when he sets it down that he can truly embrace him. It gets me every time. And then it goes right back to being incredibly funny. It just might be a perfect movie.
I have watched and immersed myself in nearly every piece of Batman media since I was a baby. I avoided this movie until 2 years ago since I thought it was gonna be goofy and not really a Batman movie. When I finally watched it on a random summer day I fell in love with Batman all over again. The heart that made up the Batfamily’s interactions was there, his history was respected and utilized incredibly well and the villains were an essential part to the story. This has made its way as one of my favorite Batman movies and is up there with The Dark Knight and The Batman for me.
the lego batman movie being so beloved by everyone is SO funny and i will continue to rep it to anyone i meet who has never watched it. just fine cinema all around, it's my #1 sick day movie
7:27 - Ironic that you would show a clip of the Pattinson Batman for this point, because that's exactly the lesson this novice Batman learns. That scene when Batman hears that one Riddler Goon say, "Me? I'm Vengeance" immediately shapes Batman's mindset. He realizes that all this time, he's been no better than the people he's been "punishing" and needs to lean a bit more out of the darkness, and into the light. Less vengeance, more justice; and at the end of The Batman, he knows that and now has to learn to apply it. Less of a curse to be feared by criminals, and more of a champion for good to every day citizens.
this film blew me away. im older and didnt really take it seriously for obvious reasons but a co worker who doenst even know as much as I know about Batman put me on. i was floored. high as hell dying watching it lol
Love this movie so much. My family is obsessed with it and we quote it very often. The only other movie we quote to this degree is The Emperor’s New Groove. Truly a family classic.
I will always love the Lego movies, because not only is the animation style _perfectly_ crafted to the style of humor the movies often use, but they usually have pretty well written stories and you can tell that a lot of love went into them
I saw this with my wife on my birthday 6 years ago as a thirty year old. We both were the only people in the theater. We laughed so hard at the no no no scene that if anyone else would have been in there they probably would have complained to management.
This is what I wish a lot of franchises would do. Take every character iteration and combine them into one prime version of that character. I'll use Sonic as an example. I know Sonic Team has said on Twitter/X that "Everything Is Canon." And I know that the video games have also begun to have some form of continuity and connection with the IDW comics. But because each version of Sonic is different from the other. I wish we could see every version of Sonic from the Video Games, Movies, TV Shows, Comics, etc., and combine them into one True Prime Sonic The Hedgehog. (Reference to Netflix's Sonic Prime not intended) We can ignore the infamous Archie Sonic writer, whom we don't talk about.

This movie just felt so full of love.
It's cool to hear that so many Batman fans loved this movie too, since I'm not all that familiar with the Batman franchise. A lot of modern superhero movies require audiences to be, not just familiar with, but MEGAfans of the previous movies in order to understand what's going on, and with how many movies there are at this point it's overwhelming to try and get into it now. Anyway, I LOVED this movie, and it's amazing that it's able to pay homage to the Batman franchise without alienating new viewers

Gonna be honest, never expected to cry at a Lego Batman Movie.
Fun fact: lego batman is canonically the strongest lego minifigure, due to him having a 9-pack
lol
The "kids can be cruel" line was gold 😂
This is like the only version of Batman who has objectively never killed anyone (even Battinson inadvertently killed at least someone during the chase scene when the Batmobile’s exhaust ignited that one truck).
Cartoon logic makes that way easier to do
Also not being in the same room as Zach Snyder
BTAS maybe?
@@BJGvideos To my memory not really but again there's a lot that happens there
Well those penguins he used to shield himself from Poison Ivy probably died. (I’m just gonna imagine they were evil penguins tho 🐧 🔪)
One of my only regrets in life is NOT seeing this in theaters opening weekend.
I watched it when it came to theaters with a friend and it was the best experience ever
Damn someone else remembers Kick-Ass, hell yeah
Would work with damien wayne.
Even if Kevin Conroy isn’t with us anymore, I won’t mind Will Arnett voicing Batman at all.
For a time this was my all-time favourite Batman movie as a teen. This film just felt like a genuine love letter to the character and Will Arnett truly is underrated as Batman.
I looove the dark versions of batman but I somehow love this version even more..
have you seen the animated series?
@@alchemistofsteel8099 I've watched batman beyond and a few others but I see ur point
Goes to show what having a touch of character in you instead of always being dark and broody does huh?
@@xeno_animation1animated version of batman is pretty much thus
"If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, and make a change."
Batman, Woo.
Definitely not Michael Jackson.
Watching this movie again after years you realise that there is a ridiculous amount of adult jokes hidden in it.
"children can be cruel"
@@Anarqismo😮 67 rff😂
Who always pays his taxes? NOT BATMAAAN!
“I fight around” i loved the joker and batman relationship plot bwahah
This is what happens when someone that knows the material works on a movie adaptation. It shows when there's love and passion behind a project.
I absolutely adore the Lego Batman Movie. Truly a hilarious, reference filled delight. Love your guys videos too!
At the end of the day Batman isn't a loner, he has a found family always there for him, he just has to accept them
“What are you doing?”
“Punching Bane.”
“Ouch! That was unnecessary… :(“
This is one of the first movies i watched with my adopted son and i cried. A lot. What a film
I still think this movie was so underrated and fun. Its better than The lego ninjago movie & The lego movie 2
Yeah, and the Ninjago movie wasn’t really faithful to the actual series that I enjoyed when I was in elementary.
Tbh all of the movies are better than Lego Movie 2 imo.
I agree the second Lego movie was lackluster they should have just done a second Lego Batman movie
ive been waiting for a proper video essay on the lego batman movie, its so perfect
I’ve never been huge into Batman, but this definitely makes me appreciate it more.
'i dont feel anything emotionally except for RAGE'
the lego Batman movie is so rewatchable, i love it
Batman in the Lego movies is basically just kid friendly Deadpool.
4:50 that poster is gold. I want one
As soon as I left the theater I just shook my head and said "that had more character development then Ive seen out of any other adaption"
1:48 If i had a nickel for every time audiences thought a lego animated movie would be a cash grab only to be pleasantly surprised, I'd have two nickles. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice
weird? more like wonderful
My dad has been a Batman fan ever since he watched the Adam West show a kid. And all these years later, if you ask him what is his favorite Batman film, he will always point to this one
What Lord and Miller did with Batman in the Lego movie was absolute genius. 😂
I mean where else can you see Batman stealing the hyperdrive from the Millennium Falcon 😂😂
You pretty much summed up my opinion sir. I recommended this movie to all friends who love batman and never got a bad review.
The movie felt like a love letter to Bruce Timm's work on Batman in particular. The animation was excellent, and the characters were all understood perfectly... but the crew just couldn't help teasing a Batman and batgirl couple.
The relationships in this film are just so fun. Robin is delightful and a perfect foil against Batman's overly serious and angst persona
It showed me, that people and even big movie studios can still make good movies in the 21st century!
underated line imo
"Why did you built this thing with only 1 seat?"
"Because last time i checked I only had 1 butt"
I watched the Lego Batman Movie with my mother and my aunt, and they thought it was too goofy. They just don't see what an absolute gem this movie is.
This movie is hilarious and amazing.
On a side note though, it's actually crazy how Lego and Warner Brothers made one of the most loyal Batman films ever yet in the same year, made a Ninjago movie that barely has any semblance to the show it came from.
“Accidentally adopts”😂
A movie that finally instead of asking who batman is, asked how batman is (doing).
I actually rewatched this yesterday! Love this movie, *especially* lego joker and batman's relationship
"because last I checked i only have one butt." Kills me everytime 😂
the lego batman movie being so beloved by everyone is SO funny and i will continue to rep it to anyone i meet who has never watched it. just fine cinema all around, it's my #1 sick day movie
I would love to see the live-action Nightwing movie directed by Chris McKay
"If you want to make the world a better place, look at yourself and make a change." this is the only batman movie i have ever cried while watching tbh
There are so many villains in this movie that they put in all of Batman’s and kept going
In my opinion that is probably the most rewatchable Batman movie
I’ll always remember walking out of the theater saying this was best Batman movie period the biggest love letter to the character ever
I genuinely did not expect to love this movie as much as I did I really want a part 2
look, when a youtuber makes an analysis for my fave comfort movie i HAVE to watch !
Whenever anyone asls "whos youve favourote batman" I always say Arnett
This is a great video essay, Lego Batman deserves all the accolades and more.
this film blew me away. im older and didnt really take it seriously for obvious reasons but a co worker who doenst even know as much as I know about Batman put me on. i was floored. high as hell dying watching it lol
5:49 "The Speedwagon" WAIT! SO IT'S A JOJO REFERENCE ALL ALONG!??
Where can I find 0:42 scene? (I watched the movie, but I don't remember any sort of interview-ish scene)
Think it is a promotion for the movie.
Like Morgan Freeman reading a phone book and making it sound interesting.
It was not there. Could be a promotion thing.
Uhh around 1st half
Such a good breakdown of what makes the lego batman movie such a gem, I had forgotten about it until now. Ill watch it with my mom later this week :)
(Reference to Netflix's Sonic Prime not intended)
We can ignore the infamous Archie Sonic writer, whom we don't talk about.
I had so much fun watching Lego Batman! Fav part was when Joker was like "I hate you" and he was like "me too" and everyone was like booing him 😂😂😂 SAY IT BACK! 😂😂😂😂 Hilarious
This movie made me a Batman fan, and I’m literally so obsessed with it. It’s my favorite movie of all time
I hope the DCU’s Batman Brave and Bold dives into a fully formed Batverse the same way Lego Batman did it
also, it is so incredibly nice to just look at. the lighting and the colours and everything is so good
Just finished watching it since last time I seen it was when it came out in theater. I knew I loved the movie so much because of how it played out. It was honestly one of my favorite Lego movies, and maybe favorite movie.
You did not convince me on “most faithful” but 100% leg9 Batman is a masterpiece and not every one needs to be super dark and tragic.
I just seen it for the first time about two weeks ago. And absolutely and completely love it to pieces. The more i watch it the more i notice and love it
when i watched it for the first time i didnt expect a genuine batman movie with all kinds of hidden easter eggs
This movie was way better than it had any right to be
The silliness is what made the Lego video games amazing, and having that in movie form is amazing.
Man, its my favourite batman movie. Its just so good
Being silly literally made it faithful to everything.
The Batman animated series would like to have a talk with you in a dark alley…
To me, there are three truly great Batman movies. This, Mask of the Phantasm, and his crossover with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 😊
I've been a DC fan for all of a month, consuming content in every waking moment I have. I just watched Lego Batman for the first time three days ago, and LOVED IT. Knowing that most of the movie franchises won't entirely live up to what I've experienced thus far with Lego Batman, Young Justice, and the Nightwing (2016) comics is definitely a disappointment.
I was 21 when this movie was released, and I didn’t expect to enjoy it like I did. In fact i wasn’t going to even see it at all, except my girlfriend really wanted to watch it so we did. I absolutely adored this movie, and I never thought I would! I had not seen any Lego movies prior, and was expecting a silly Batman story for kids, but it was not! I loved the references, the characters, the story, the animation, everything.
Just glad to see a Batman movie where they recognise that his refusal to make connections is a flaw, not a strength
