I'm really bad at singing (those screaming Siberian Huskies you see on IG are ways better than me) but I'm really fascinated by these technical videos. Also, your Italian pronunciation is perfect! 👏

Thank you ^.^ Well, I like punk and I often like the sound of singers who "can't sing", so you probably sound fine to me ^.^

1.18min : would you say that it is actually the larynx, and basically our whole “vocal box” that is moving juuuusst a tiny bit up and down, therefore extending/shrinking the vocal chords to get that mini pitch shift (without the opening and closing)? I’m trying to grasp what is physically happening and I visualize this type of movement. What do you think?
Because when we change from not to another , the larynx (and all its components) move

Ah... so you're asking a tricky question because the answer is yes and no, possibly...
Yes, the entire larynx will participate in vibrato. If you look at stroboscopies of vibrato, everything is generally jiggling about slightly.
"No" in the sense that the movement of the larynx wouldn't have an effect on the length of the vocal folds. Pitch on the vocal folds is irrelevant and independent from the position of the larynx.
So, if we take your hypothesis and adjust it, it would read: "the larynx, and basically our whole “vocal box” is moving juuuusst a tiny bit up and down, and simultaneously our vocal folds are lengthening/shortening to get that mini pitch shift (without the opening and closing)". Does that make sense or create further confusion?

I'm not much of a singer at all but I just like the way you teach so much, it's so active and expressive. If my old physics teacher was like you I might have actually finished my engineering degree :D

Thank you! I wish my physics teacher was more animated... I liked physics as a subject but my teachers were terrible XD

Yay! Really happy to have this covered- vibrato is pretty lacking in my own singing. I like the kinaesthetic element. I’ve been surprised at how helpful the suggestion for a kinaesthetic component in false cord activation/de-activation that you gave in your third false cord video is. I think it stops me fixating too much on how delicate and tricky the coordination is, by giving it a clear direction each time.

I love kinaesthetic details in practice. Especially movements that can be made bigger or more intense just in case I'm being too "lazy" and too delicate sometimes :)

I believe there was a deliberate attempt in the early thrash era to eliminate vibrato as a negative reaction to the 80s hairmetal/Dio-like vocalists and this anti-vibrato trend carried through speed metal/thrash and into grunge. Pretty sure I remember an old Hetfield quote (from 1st album era) where he stated this anti-vibrato attitude because they hated the LA hair-band music/grandstanding.

I love that! I'm all for vibrato and 0 vibrato, I love both. In the context of metal, I probably gravitate to more thrash, lack of vibrato vocals, but it's nice to have the option of vibrato at the end of a sustained phrase :D

    Excellent tutorial once again! \m/ 💀 \m/
I like so much your approach to the topics. You go through what the topic in question is,
what are the elements of it and with examples. Then you provide us with step by step guidelines what to do to practice it and even with different options.
One question: What about vibrato when growling: are there things to be taken into account with that?

    • @AlikiKatriou
      @AlikiKatriou  Год назад +1

      Yaaaay :D Thank you.
So I love vibrato when growling. One thing to take into account is that it isn't very audible, so it becomes less of an aesthetic issue and more of a functional issue. I like adding vibrato at the end of long sustained growls sometimes, just to give it that sense of movement ^.^
