Mine is a 2006KJ 3.7 V6 with a bad chain tensioner but still running. I consider it a good Jeep, but surely that engine is not so reliable like older straigth six 4.0L.
When I got the KJ there was about 6 for sale within a 10 mile radius with engine problems. So it was a matter of who would take the least amount for theirs. It seems they do not do well once they get hot. The chain tensioners wear out. Getting the timing correct was a complicated job. Other than that I think they do OK. super common failure on all 3.7/4.7/5.7.. its caused by leaking water pumps allowing over heating. I have a fleet of 11 jeeps ive rescued for cheap because of this failure.
Do you find used parts or get new, rebuilt, remanufactured? I am asking because where I am it is difficult to find good used parts. Most have a questionable past.
No no! Best Jeep was the 99 to 01 Cherokee. If it was refined, it would have been the toughest. Problem was, the engines lasted toooooooo long. And unless you beat it into the ground, it would last longer than most vehicles. The liberty is second to it!
I wanted a Cherokee, 90-01 when my friend bought this Liberty. I actually found two that were wrecked, one in the front and one in the rear for about $500 for the pair. They sold before I had a chance to go look at them. While the Liberty was not my first choice it has held up very well for over a year now. Have you seen the Liberty vs Grand Cherokee video?
I paid $300 for the Jeep and $300 for the new and used parts. $90 for the heads, which the guy threw in timing chain tensioners and slides and the PCV parts that broke. The Gasket kit was around $85 with head bolts. The rest was oil and coolant from changing it multiple times. It would have been less had I done it right the first time. Thanks for watching !
Hey quick question: Someone near me is sellling his 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport 4WD with only 18,600 miles (yes, 18,6k) for $2,600 usd. His wife passed away and he is looking to get rid of it. Is it a good deal? The exterior looks very good. Thanks!
The best jeep ever made is definitely not the jeep liberty it’s the jeep XJ Cherokee. My uncle got his to 385,000 miles and the engine and transmission was still fine it was just rotted so bad that you could almost see holes in the floor. My girlfriend had a Jeep liberty Limited and it was like the nicest one you can get it it was kind of a piece of shit. The seat broke so it was like twisted because the plastic to the inside of broke. I neededBall joints like 15 times. And it ran through brakes like nobody’s business. Not trying to sound sexist but it could just be because it was female driven… Still a tough little bugger. However now that I’m thinking about it my friends dad had a diesel jeep liberty and he drove that thing for 15 years never gave them any trouble. I think it’s basically just the model you get the fancier they are the more problems they have.

Cheap stupid fun. I have a video series starting this week doing a Dangerously Cheap and quick Overland conversion on the KJ.
Tillamook Oregon is in my back yard...
Love my 05 limited has268k miles on it
I am really liking this 02. I just wish the seats were more comfortable.
@@TurlosGarage seat covers would help that one
Well, I had a Rubicon with a winch pull me out of a flooded ditch today. I think it might have the Liberty beat n
Tough cookies those Libbys are. Better on the highway than Wranglers with those too big tires..
They are great SUV’s
cool Jeep
This KJ has been a lot of fun to take off road. Easy to work on. Easy to get parts for. It has been a great vehicle.
@@TurlosGarage Yes sir, I love Jeep!
And yes this is actually a Mitsubishi engine!!!!!and yes i have a 2006 jeep liberty sport waitin for more problems outside the ac going out and all power window regulators....good luck for me
super common failure on all 3.7/4.7/5.7.. its caused by leaking water pumps allowing over heating.
A lot of the 2001 i6 had casting problems with the block, but that gen definitely has the best intake manifold for the i6
Just an idea, putting some prices like what you paid and time invested would make this video more interesting. good job though
Thanks for the recommendations. That is a good point. I will try that in future videos of fixing vehicles.
@@TurlosGarage thanks man, awesome, i will watch them
Cheap,reliable,low consumption (2.5 crd).Great for off road,real" peoples car".
Yes it is! Thanks for the comment!
Yes sir
👍
Hey quick question:
Someone near me is sellling his 2004 Jeep Liberty Sport 4WD with only 18,600 miles (yes, 18,6k) for $2,600 usd. His wife passed away and he is looking to get rid of it. Is it a good deal? The exterior looks very good.
Thanks!
As long as there’s nothing wrong with it. Cause that’s a steal if it’s mint
Omg what a brutally unlucky two candidates for leftover part bingo
Leftover bingo parts. That sounds like a great video idea! 😁
What a cheap Jeep!
I wanted an XJ but could not find one for my $300 budget. I still plan on getting one someday. Just too many projects right now. Thanks for watching!
