- Today on Dirt Lifestyle we are going to finish my brother's Diesel Jeep Liberty KJ! What a great Jeep to use as the framework for a budget overland build. The 2.8 CRD has plenty of grunt and remains very fuel efficient. PLUS this project is CHEAP when you compare it to most other 4x4 builds. Consider the fact that this has heat seats, leather and it's a diesel but only costs 5-8k on the used market... it's a bargain!

Thank you for doing more to this build! It's awesome! I own a KJ on a 4in lift overland style rig too. If you didn't know you can get OME front springs rated for the CRD. OME 2790 is the part number. Put that with some Bilstein 4600s and you will be good to go! I run that on mine with a bumper and winch too.
I like to see a person using all the required safety gear and not cutting corners, keep it up! Thanks for the roof rack ideas. That Liberty looks very good! Agree 199% on building with what you have. I have two 92 FJ80s and both are very capable.

It took us over a year to find this one! We actually have alot of crd Libertys in the pnw but I really wanted to find one that was fully loaded and didn't have anything done to it yet. This one had 86k on it so I did the timing belt, upgraded the charge pipes, installed a billet torque converter, a shift kit, did an economy tune deleted the factory muffler and deleted the vicious heater.
For the next 5 years of Ownership we didn't do anything but change the oil and the fuel filter. It was super reliable and very fuel efficient. I still miss it lol but you can't keep them all. If you take care of these and upgrade the problem areas first you will love it!

Very timely. I was just planning over the last week, building my own roof rack for my suburban, using the factory roof rack mounts like you did. Since aluminum is less expensive than steel now I’m planning on using sched 40 aluminum pipe.

Love my CRD KJ Liberty. You just have to understand that lifting it starts a timer on the front CV axles. You will be replacing them more often. The CRD front differential is shifted more to the driver's side to accommodate the diesel motor. From what I can tell, this means that the driver's side CV shaft is shorter which causes the CVs to bind when there is no load on the wheels. I think limit straps could help this and I plan on trying it out.
Did you try the limit straps? I have them on my KJ and I don't see a difference. My CV's need replacing alot more often than I anticipated.
I love the final message in this video, the most important part is to get out there in the vehicle you have! Take your Prius, minivan, or other car and go have adventures. Dont wait around for the perfect rig when most places across the globe are available with a little sweat and intitiative.
I had a liberty once they are kinda fun. Not to bad for a little 4x4. My liberty with 225/75r16 bald street tread would keep up with my brothers little bronco2 he had with a little lift and 31/10.5 bfg mt.
The KJ Liberty (Or Cherokee here in Australia) is fairly underrated! I've taken my slightly modified (2.5" lift, Roofrack, 30" tyres, LED spot lights) through a lot in the Australian outback. And the only thing that needed replacing was the frot prop-shaft uni joint as the boot cracked and let a heap of sand and dirt in.
I use to have a Liberty about 10 years ago. It was a good entry to wheeling for me. I did about the same lift and tire size. It was great because I could fit the whole family and had a/c. I miss it sometimes for the comfort. That thing looks great!

There is one of these for sale in the California central valley for a reasonable price right now on Craig's list. Probably wont last long, these diesel Liberties are rare.
10:26 but there is rubber grommet in firewall which can be used to guide wires, on drivers side. used this to put through few.
Awesome... I still have my 2005 Liberty didnt spend kuch money but lifted 2" and got some cheap ranchos on it and runs smooth on the trails... Many adventures with it in the last 8 years... I just got me a jeep trailhawk 2017 which i am loving as well.. but not fond of many sensors on messages board...

Almost bought a common rail diesel Liberty back in 2006; bought a TJ instead. Amazing torque! Great powertrain, nice truck.

In the towing industry they're called a door wedge! To the point guys will use them to wedge the door open so they can get a long jim inside to unlock the vehicle.
They sell the air bags at Home Depot and Lowe's, and I believe Harbor Freight also. They are super handy. Especially if you have a buddy that always locks his keys in his truck.
I bought some of that Seymour Truck bed coating and used it on the air tank I set up for my jeep and the repair on my sons Jeep bumper.....LOVE that stuff! Wish they made it in red for my Gladiators skids

Air wedges are commonly used to get into vehicles when people lock their keys in.
They are inserted into the passenger's door and the door is pushed open enough to either snag the keys or push the power door lock button with a long rod.

I ended up doing the conduit washers for spacers on my forks...the KK hack is a good one. Wished I would have known about it way back when!

That rig looks awesome. I am not as much of a fan of the look of the rooftop tent on it, but it looks good. Those little bladders were a good idea for leveling the roof rack.

Man I miss wheeling my 2008 crd 2.8 libby I had a tune on it and that's was it but good tires saved my bacon a couple time and also pulled a city bus up a hill those things are awesome rigs to wheel mine killed the computer and I could not afford to fix it anymore are canadian roads started to eat the body

Great build! Starting to do my Libby, some great ideas here. And the bumper build was awesome.
I love the final thoughts in this video because it's so true. In other countries like Australia for instance they typically run 33" tires on a two inch lift. Here in the USA it's trending to go bigger which makes things handle weird for daily use and break quickly on the trails.
I've been binge watching all of your videos lately and recently took on a small project attempting to make a center console/shift bezel out of sheet metal. Love it!

Diesel liberties are so cool!
You can also add 2" conduit nuts between the strut fork and the bottom of the strut as a spacer. You can add a total of 3 gives about an inch of lift. Add a rusty's offroad top plate to the top of the strut and get another 1/2 inch of lift.
I love the run what you have. I have a 86 cucv k5 blazer with the detroit 6.2 diesel. She doesn't win any speed contests but has been a fun reliable rig that I take my family out every chance we can get.

Sick idea of the air wedges. I do a lot of fabricating by myself also and these look like they would be very useful. I'm wondering how spark resistant they are??

Bought a 04 Jeep Liberty columbia edition. All blue fenders pretty, 4 inch lift, bought jba offroad control arms. Mudder tires stock gray rims still. Whole music system upgraded. All the bells and wistles. Looking for a brush guard everyday. & want the tail light guards bad!

"Run what ya brung!" Amen, brother! I have a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer EXT, the 3 row seating model. Right now it has a 2" front, 1" rear leveling kit with 1-1/2" BORA aluminum spacers and 265/70R17 Firestone Destination AT/2's. Plan for this summer is to replace the front suspension spacer with a 2" BDS strut top hat, new Bilstein 4600 struts, Moog coil spring, and new strut mounts. The back will get new Z71 springs (from a 2009 Tahoe, don't worry they will fit, it's a popular upgrade), and Rough Country 23204 shocks. I plan to keep the aluminum spacer from the leveling kit. I also plan to install a Badlands Apex 120000 winch and winch plate. I've pretty well got it mentally figured out how I'll do it, just need to get it down on paper. Need to buy some steel, though.
Used to have a Liberty - was a great little truck - definitely doesn't get the love it deserves.
If its not a manual there is a hole in the firewall I used for my wiring that would've been for the clutch. On autos they just put a rubber grommet in it. Easy to use and you just put a hole in the grommet to seal it up again

Original owner from when I custom ordered it back in 2006. I am not a fabricator, nor do I have access to anything to do fabrication. What would be the chance of ordering a set of those mounts from you?

I wheel a boring Jeep liberty , 2.5" lift, JBA uppers, 32s , all skid plates, bumper delete , pinch welds cut off etc... these little jeep are actually capable and a lot of fun.
In November of 2021 I bought a brand new 2002 Jeep Liberty. I absolutely loved that Jeep. It drove great on the road and was also really capable off road even bone stock. I dove it for about seven years and then when I got married it became my wife's everyday driver. When we had about 105,000 miles on the Liberty the transfer case blew in my Cherokee. So we bought a used 2006 Jeep Commander for the wife and the Liberty got the lift and tires I had been wanting for a long time and became my new work vehicle. For all of the naysayers out there I had my Liberty in some really rough stuff in the mountains of WV and PA and it never disappointed.
My 2002 Jeep Liberty had the 3.7 liter v6 and was equipped with the factory off road package and towing package. This includes a limited slip rear end with 3.73 gears and a high capacity cooling system. It also had pretty good skids from the factory including one that completely covered the front differential and engine oil pan.
Here are some of the Mods:
1) 2.5 inch Frankin lift: This consisted of Old man Emu HD extended coils, shocks and struts
2) Jeepin by Al after market a arms
3) All new Moog heavy duty upper and lower ball joints and tie rod ends
4) boulder bars
5) rock crusher rear differential cover
6) 16" Jeep Rubicon Wheels
7) Goodyear Wrangler MT/R (with Kevlar) LT245/75R-16 tires

I'm bit late to the show but man that's a great list of suspension upgrades. IRO also has a full set of adjustable rear control arms that can be optioned with a Flex-joint on the frame-side. Another option to positioning the rear axle or setting pinion-angle.
I never thought I'd say this, but damn that's a sweet liberty! It's amazing what a little open mindedness and elbow grease can do.
Nice idea with replacing the stock roof rails.
My rack sits way too high off my stock rails. I know what I’m doing next weekend.
Have you ever done a spacer lift ? I have a liberty but can’t spend too much on new suspension pieces.
I've got an XJ as well as a first gen Tacoma that are toys, but I also have a dead stock liberty daily driver. Looking forward to tinkering with it now! The wife will hate us both for this but man, trucks, trucks, manly man...
I originally ended up with a Liberty in 2013. It was an 02 and I bought it because I needed a vehicle where I could put my wheelchair in the back, and hobble to the driver's seat relatively easily. Then someone t boned me and flipped it over with my my mom and I inside. (We were both ok). So then my next vehicle I just wanted something cheap and I knew someone selling an 05 Liberty for $950. I drove that until my mom's friend was selling her 2012 Liberty cheap because she ended up with some legal fees she needed to pay. I tell ya what... I never thought I'd like the old rounder style but I ended up liking it a lot. Then I really hated the newer body style but it grew on me and now I love it. Tons of space, fairly comfortable, wish it got better gas mileage, but not terrible. I really like the Jeep Liberty!

Wish they'd done more with the liberty over at jeep. I've owned mine for 15 years and dont plan to get rid of.

As much time as you spend in the shop I'm surprised you don't have a heat source that keeps it a comfortable, consistent temperature. Don't get me wrong, the wood stove is fantastic, but another heat source that keeps the temperature from dropping overnight would make it so much more comfortable. I'm just soft that way! Keep up the great work!
I used wheel with a guy who put Rubicon D44s under his Liberty on 35s. It was quite the Billy goat. He got hit by a 18 wheeler from behind and that was the end of that Jeep. Luckily he didn't get hurt probably because of the custom bumper spare tire carrier and ladder to his roof rack.
