    Really dont know what they were up to. Came to the US with only 200 dollars after being jobless in kenya for 4trs and bila makaratasi but made it. I was ready hata nikiambiwa nilime mitaro kwa mashamba,nifanye mjengo. Nilikuwa nimechoka na ukosefu wa kazi kenya na kushindwa kulisha family.Quick job without minding my class did dish wahing under the table,carpentry building stairs ,maintenace in a hotel and anything to put aa dollar in my pocket and sending money every month to my wife. Put my self back in university graduated working many hours and finushed my masters degree in public health became a citizen,bought two houses and brought my wife and kids. It's just your vision in life and strategy. You can make or fail in the US with no vision but chances of making it are 90% especially in smaller towns. Dont go to big cities like NY

    I am a South African and we came to the US for school too during apartheid. I’ll advise people to go to small towns in states like Utah, Maine and taking any jobs may be a starting point. Avoid expensive states like NYC or California. Hard work and good education pays off at the end. Indeed, home is the best place but we Africans also have a right to seek opportunities else where.

    Settling down in USA is not easy, especially if you don't have good host family and supportive system to give you the right information. If you're doing good in Kenya, come and do surveys b4 relocating to USA. If you're comfortable financially stay home. But if you're struggling with no job and you're young and want to further your education come to Western countries.

      My sister hosted me and it was hell on earth. She had just had her baby and was writing her PhD thesis and her husband was in the Netherlands. I think she was going through post natal depression and I was the one person she would unleash her fury to. Our relationship has never been the same almost 20 years down the road. But I'm happy to say that despite my rough start, I got a masters degree and a great job in my field. I was determined not to give up.

  • @johnvolk9008
    @johnvolk9008 11 месяцев назад +7

    I went to study in USA for my masters degree in Oregon in 1988. I was young and single then. But it never occurred to me that I would like to stay. Part time work was meant for fun and not survival. I had a job in agricultural research and our government scholarship. I later got a teaching job and obtained a doctoral degree. I passed through all my school life from primary to doctoral degree under government sponsorship but one has to stand out of the group and that's how the system was in our country. I m now retired and enjoying out here. We have 3 children and all have used government scholarships to pass through university. It is not as bad in Africa in most careers if you see anything positive in our countries. I see many foreigners coming to our country and making it. Just do what foreigners do in Africa and you will make it.

    Going to school immediately after landing is easier said than done especially in California.You can work first two years low income jobs as you save small for college.Helps you get established for credit & financial college loans & grants.California is very expensive but you can't go wrong with Nursing although private colleges in California are expensive.It is very hard to get into a Community College because of waiting lists & lottery system for competitive Nursing fields.Unless you have a sponsor to pay all your other expenses it is tough.Remember a car in USA is a basic need.Start with a CNA job & work your way up.Don't let the pay rate which is higher than Kenya confuse you into not furthering your Education.Good luck everyone!

      I personally think everybody has a different journey. People doing good in kenya can loose everything in a blink of an eye.either because of robbery or sickness.the systems dont work.you have to bribe everybody from a gateman to the managers to get things done.what am trying to say is people relocate for different reason but most importantly to a system that works.struggles are there before settling it very ok you are from a different country but with patience and hardwork the situation will change with time.plz stop discouraging people who want to relocate because of your story.give people hope as you tell your stories.In kenya the only people who can survive are politicians, police,doctors and thats if they have their private clinics and people doing sheddy businesses. Otherwise a normal Kenyans with normal income are still frustrated by the system.si kwa ubaya lakini.dont discourage people because if the places you are are that bad you could be back in kenya.
