    This simple circuit will transmit electric power at a distance of more than 15 cm. It uses a blocking oscillator (joule thief) with a pancake coil. It can transmit up to 19 volts and a maximum current of about 400 mA.

    Its amazing how many people are impressed with this simple transformer action with magnetic fields. 40 years ago our professor showed us lighting a 40watt flo lamp from the TV Transmitter tower 5 miles away . That was impressive.

    This works perfect.
    just finished mine and tryed it on 3.3 volts of a computer supply.
    3.3 because i dont have a heat sink yet which i recommend if you go higher in voltage.
    the transistor gets a little warm already.
    I used a tip35c transistor and a 5 watt 470 ohms resistor.
    for the coil I used speaker wire held together with hot glue.

    So theoretically, if the joule thief coil was connected to a power supply of a reasonable power, and the second coil was attached to a 5 volts regulator and a usb port, it could be used as a wireless charging solution for a phone (within a fairly small range of course)?

    • @ludicscience
      @ludicscience  9 лет назад +2

      Haseeb Malik In principle yes, but modern phones need a fairly large charging current, around 1 amp. This device will give you a maximum of 400 ma (less losses from the regulator).

Should I increase the resistor value? I'm using the exactly the same ones from tutorial; TIP35C, 5W470ohm x 2, with USB 2.0 output of 5V and 0.5A. Could you please help me out?

      @MassageWithKlay 3 года назад

      in this experiment .. pretty much none .. although a slightly different winding of the coil which would make it phi, would probably give a slight increase in the distance which you can cause the induction. These coils were initially designed to be able to work as capacitors more than just basic induction circuits, as N. Tesla found it hard to find suitable store bought capacitors that would sustain the experiments he was doing at the time. It was one of his frustrations.

    I want to power a small LED with its receptor coul about 12 cm above a wooden base plate into which I'll put the slayer coil. But there has to be a mirror immediately over the coil which will hide it from view. Would the mirror's thin coating of aluminum interrupt the field and prevent conduction of electricity across the coils?

    • @ludicscience
      @ludicscience  7 лет назад

      I think it will interfere, however I have not tested it

    • @eugenecampbellutube
      @eugenecampbellutube 7 лет назад

      That's what I suspected. The pancake coil you show would fit nicely in my base, and I could make it with wire less thickly insulated than what you have, thus increasing the number of turns in the coil, if that would help. Your receiving coil is also about the same as what would fit my project. I could reduce the distance to maybe 10 cm. Suppose I put 18 volts to it with sufficent power. (Plus, suppose an ideal resonance could be tested and set up between the coils.) If there is possibility of success I think I'd like to try it.
      May I ask you to put a mirror above the coil at various distances, with at least 10 cm between the mirror and the receiving coil, to see if any current will pass through the aluminum coating? Test it for me? I'd be very grateful :-)
