Absolutely beautiful! thanks for sharing, this just came on my feed. Loved the tutorial so pleasant and peaceful without backgound nonsence music, I love Irish people too blessed be x
Thank you for posting such an inspiring video. I recently began dyeing fabric with natural elements and I must say I have truly fallen down the rabbit hole. I find myself paying more attention to the roadside weeds than I do to the road on my way to work each morning. I hope I don’t have to explain this to my husband when he is called upon to pull my car out of the ditch.
You’re so welcome. I can hear that you’ve been bitten by the bug!!! Even after quite a number of years Eco printing never fails to excite me and opening bundles is such a joy. Have fun!
loved this video, Nicola. A good tip - I use an atomiser spray bottle with the water vinegar mix and spray it onto the paper. It's a lot easier for students to do then to dunk. and it doesn't matter what size your paper is.
These are so beautiful! I found it very relaxing to watch you positioning the leaves. I laughed when you said "herb robert", because until that moment I had thought wild geranium was something mysterious, instead in the Spring there is an endless supply of it growing in my garden. I had thought alum was necessary for this process, but I'm happy to see that it's not, as I would have to order it online. Thank you for this great demonstration.
Hi nicola! This is exactly the video full of tips and information I was looking for so good! I didn’t realise it was you until the end, so I am now a dedicated follower! Thank you and I love all your work! ☘️☘️☘️☘️

In the beginning, you mention that it is also possible to roll the bundles. Does that mean, just the paper and the plant-material? Or do I need to add something else to it?
Thank you Nicola, very simple and easy instructions. Your prints are lovely as your wonderful country which I have visited twice and have delightful memories or nature and people. Hugs
Thank you so much for sharing this Nicola, I'm getting butterflies of excitement just at the thought of trying it 😆. My sister cards, spins & knits wool from her own sheep, I recently visited her and we did some natural dying (outside, in big pots over an open fire) It felt like we were performing magic! I think this may feel similar.
GORGEOUS Do you have a tutorial on how to do this on scarves and how to "set" the colours to sell scarves ? Can one sell the paper ? I am EXCITED to find you. I am sorry if I asked too many questions !! Love and Peace from Canada. xx BTW My daughter and I backpacked across all of Ireland. It felt more like home than my birth country. The people were so great to us. Ireland is so very beautiful in so many ways...

Thankyou for this intentional watercolor paper print tutorial. I often use paper as my iron blanket while printing fabric and get some nice- but accidental prints for notecards. Great idea
You're very welcome Jeanne! I'd love to have more time to print paper because I want to use some to wallpaper one wall in my bathroom! It's such a great technique and I bet your cards are a big hit.
Thank you for such an easy and straightforward tutorial with very basic supplies that I already have around my house. I do need to find a pot, but that is a matter of taking a trip to one of my local thrift stores. I am new to "junk" journaling and wanted to try my hand at eco printing papers for a field notes type journal. I thought it would be more special to use foraged foliage from my property to include in this journal about the forest and woods.
Absolutely Tracy, using your own eco printed paper to create a journal is a beautiful way of celebrating your own locally foraged vegetation. It does sound as if paper is really your thing but if you're interested in upcycling garments or adding fabric bundles to your pot, this upcoming FREE bootcamp could be the one for you! members.nicolabrown.ie/bootcamp
perfect timing, Nicola. Have just spent the morning getting fabric bundles into the pot , sat down for lunch [& a rest} thinking I should make some paper prints. Beautiful! Second time watching. I’m so inspired. Can you give me guidance in what to charge for paper prints USD? Do you sell them in bundles or cards or sheets? Or? And how much? Thank you so much for helping me with this. I want to do more but don’t want to just collect the finished products. So selling seems to be necessary along with giving them. Thank you!
Sorry for my very slow reply Caroline, I missed your question for some reason. Yes, I like to use lining paper that goes under regular wallpaper. It's used to smooth out walls if they are rough.
Thank you for a very informative video! I'm used to mordanting my paper with Alum in order to get a nice clear print, but you've not done that here? The metal plates must have nice amount of iron in them to get such dark prints? Thank you.
You are so welcome! And you're absolutely correct, I use a process called the 'Dirty Pot' which is where I use my pot and rusty metal as a mordant to obtain such clear prints. I prefer this than using chemical mordants as I strive to keep my business as environmentally friendly as possible. Feel free to have a look through my other RUclips videos to learn more about the method or join my public Facebook group where the members share their creations, build community and ask questions - facebook.com/groups/nicolabrown
Thank you for this video! I can't wait to try this. I have dyed alpaca and wool yarn with onion skins and vinegar water, and found the red skins made green yarn! So much fun! My question is, could I include yarn or fabric in the water along with the paper bundles? Would they take longer than 2 hours or less? And what are you tying the bundles with, it looks like t-shirt yarn? Thank you in advance!
Yes, you can include fabric bundles in the pot when you are processing paper! Yarn too although I wouldn't leave it floating around or you run the risk of it shrinking. Wrap it up with leaves or onion skins in parchment paper and tie it tightly. The yarn is t-shirt yarn! Hi Candace, I’m happy that you enjoyed the video! I specialise in eco printing without traditional powdered mordants, the colours may be different but it’s possible to achieve some wonderful results. Hello Nicola. I eco print on paper and have tried many variations using either rusty water or powdered alum with various levels of success! I was very interested in the method you used here using 'metal plates'. Wondering what sort of metal they were? I tried to reproduce your method using cut down aluminium baking tins but sadly my results were very pale & uninteresting. I used, rose leaves, maple, oak, geranium on 300gm paper and added onion skins, avocado pits, gum leaves to the water. Paper was soaked in vinegar. Simmered for 2 hours between heavy tiles. Wondering where I went wrong? ( I'm in south australia, high summer here at present) Would be very grateful for your advice regards Ella
Hi Ella, the plates that I referred to actually came from a recycle place in Canberra! They rust easily and that is why they work very well. Aluminium will not give you modification of colour in the same way, on paper or on fabric. Try to find some rusty metal, iron is best.
HI Nicola, thanks for your very generous sharing of knowledge. I've tried this for the very first time using your video here and am absolutely thrilled with the results. If you had time to answer this question, I'd be very grateful: how many times can I use the same pot of dirty water? I processed quite a few prints (maybe 10 small tile-sized prints, two at a time), and feel now that the water is getting too dirty? Do I get rid of that and start again? I'm adding only vinegar and a few rusty bits and onion leaves, by the way.
Hi Rionach, the dirtier the better in relation to the pot liquid so work away!!! I'm delighted that you had fun and loved your results. You'll have to look at my bootcamp videos now and try with fabric!
Alum is a mordant and vinegar is a modifier so they don't do the same thing BUT, adding vinegar and rusty metal to an aluminium pot helps mimic the effects of a mordant in a more gentle way!

Hola Thiare, eres muy bienvenida!(feminine)
Thank you for good guidance. Is the ratio of water to vinigar important? You mentioned 500mg vinigar...in how much water?. Thanks
The stronger the better I think but because I can't get vinegar easily where I live I usually dilute it. Just use what you have.
Did you cut the sections apart to make cards? In otherwords, what happens after it is dried and ironed.
I didn’t this time Hedy but you can...... and I often do! Just use the paper for whatever you want, it’s very strong once it’s fully dry.
Wonderful video, Nicola. So inspiring. Tell me, please, you do not have to use AA? the vinegar and water will suffice? and why> Thank you
