The idea behind this video was to build some kind of Frippertronics looping “system” using minimum number of devices.
What I use here is a very simple, but powerful setup:
Strymon TimeLine delay
Strymon BigSky reverb
Godin Solidac guitar
Speaking about Frippertronics we often keep in mind Decay parameter. It describes how fast overdubbed loops will fade away. When Decay is set to 0% overdubbed loops volume will not decrease. When set to 100% loops will fade away immediately.
Strictly speaking this is what we call “Repeats” or “Feedback” in delay parameters.
To recreate Frippertronics with some decay effect I set delay Time to maximum available (2500ms) and Repeats to 75%. It lets me play overdubbing layers with decay time best for the case.
Since I used Strymon Timeline as a looper I placed Strymon BigSky reverb prior to delay. Having done that I could change different types of reverb for different pieces of the song.
In a sense Frippertronics, looper and sampler are synonyms. In my opinion we can think of Frippertronics as a looper or delay with Decay time set to 50-75%.
The signal chain:
Godin Solidac
Strymon BigSky
Strymon TimeLine
Lexicon Omega soundcard
Cubase
Thanks for watching! I hope this video gave you some food for thought and encouraged you in your experiments with delays.
very sweet. Yes, decay or fade is very important and overlooked by most loop pedal makers (looking at you boss) - without it you justkeep layering and it becomes a mush.
I like the way he can stop playing at the end, still listening to what has been cleated enjoy it and the coffee. Nice job.
Very well done Mikhail. Thumbs up.
Thanks!
I love this video, Mikhail, if for no other reason that that's how I play ambient guitar... just sitting on the floor cross-legged with my pedals in front of me. This resonates with me... in me... and through me.
I like your composition style, very smooth. You and Bill have completely changed my thinking about obtaining a Timeline. Thanks so much. Now subscribed.
Mikhail your music and videos are golden, thank you.
Thanks Joram!
@@MikhailMedvedevStrymon is ordered and going to try to see if I can get to where you are :D

Really helpful and inspiring!
Thanks David!
Thank you
Veeery nice. I do that too with the chiming, like after initial fading in/volume swell pads, I tend also too put on top of that the "dulcimer" with playing two of the same notes on the high e and b string 5 frets apart, and let the note ring, when it comes back 8 seconds later I play the next ascending line, and after a while it sounds like descending church bells of different pitch playing a scale, and so on.
But the important thing here is the question, can you HOLD the repeats to freeze it, so the internal relative mix just repeats itseld, and soar a improvised solo on top of it? I don't see or hear it in this video though...
Hi! The Timeline doesn't have that classic Freeze function, though it has a Hold function which can prolongue sound to infinity while you hold the button. But Hold works in a different way - it will add everything you play to it. So the only way to have that Freeze effect is to use the Timeline looper - it's gonna work the same manner
I like it. COOL!
thanks!
this video is very STALKER ! :)
Hi man! I just got my very first electric guitar (30 years old, been playing for 20!) and I am *completely* at a loss as to what gear I should purchase.
Godin Multiac SA (Synth access?!) and a 2020 Macbook Pro with Logic Pro X..... And a dream... Haha...
Please help... I want to use this for recording, what should my first investments be?
The right answer will be - don't hurry. Start from smth simple and go further step by step. This is the only way. All the information is easy to be found these days if you really need it - read, listen and watch. There's a lot of affordable equipmet on the market too. Try any guitar processor like BOSS GT-10. It has everything people couldn't even dream about 20 years ago. Including looper and USB to record to a computer...
@Mikhail Thanks for this video, very insightful. When I use both these pedals together I get a persistent sound (like an ever repeating sound echo) with some settings even when I am not adding any input (playing the guitar) any ideas on why and how to resolve?
I guess that somewhere the feedback (repeate) is close to 100% - it might be some settings in "dual delay" menu, for example - the second delay time and repeate can be set independently there
good, did you insert the bigsky inside the timeline?
right

молодец (I hope the usage is right here). I still need to learn to slow down for this style. Listened to too much metal when I was younger.
Thanks Chris! Yes, "молодец" will do))) I used to have some heavy past too) Extremely heavy and versatile I should say in the meaning of style, but finally balanced it with Ambient / Drone compensating all those many notes styles... There should be my "heavy past" somewhere on RUclips...
found some) ruclips.net/video/rHINUD8jP0U/видео.html
and this aone is lighter and more melodic ruclips.net/video/iMb5UaIa1Fo/видео.html
well yeah itwas funny )
Sounds like Megadeth meets Chick Corea.
Nice piece, but you're not really being able to create sound on sound/frippertronis. The Timeline emulates only one tape head, which limits the technique. You will need an El Cap for this. Its legendary "mode C" to correctly achieve sound on sound.
Well time goes and Strymon released the Volante pedal)
Relaxing music, made incredibly stressful by the cup of coffee ready to spill and ruin the gear.
