  • A short tutorial on how I play Frippertronics and Soundscapes style looping using a Sustainer guitar, a guitar FX pedal, a guitar synth, a delay and a looper.
Do you need all of these? No. If you can get a reasonable sustain on your guitar with whatever pedals you use, and can control the volume with a foot pedal, you can effectively create the original Frippertronics sound with just a delay pedal like the Boss Giga Delay that I use.

Ive had King Crimson in my suggestions and I know I tried to get into it as a teen but now it resonates... You made me realise I need that volume pedal to advance... 16 years ago My first experience with a pedal was that Zoom pedal... borrowed it two days from a friend tried my bass on it

I love this kind of Music. It is like listening to Birds or Wind, It has a Nature about it and is very nice. Thanks for posting!

Funnily enough I use the same Zoom/Roland combination. I used to have the Jamman looper too, but now use either the Ditto X4 from TC Electronic, or their Triple Delay. Fripp uses two Eventide H8000 processors, and for small enterprises the Helix. Those Eventides are impossibly expensive. He still uses the GR-1 guitar synth, possibly to emulate sounds he used in the 90ies. I found one second-hand, but seldom use it.

The sustainer is one way. to go back to the original Frippertronics, it's an EHX Big Muff Pi, which can be bought all day long these days.

How are you getting some of the delayed looping in the left speaker and some in the right?

It was a long time ago but as far as I recall I had two pedals going, a Jamman and a digital delay. They were both plugged into my DAW. The digital delay tended to put the notes as I played them on one side and then the repeating delays on the other. I could probably have changed that but it seemed ok at the time.
