    Fun fact: The game between Sheffield and Hallam is the oldest derby in association football.

  • @stone1andonly
    @stone1andonly 5 лет назад +8

    For many people outside the UK (certainly in the case of a lot of us Americans), it is difficult to understand the depth and complexity of Association Football, let alone its long history there. There are some similarities between the structure of AF and that of Major League Baseball, with the rather considerable exception of relegation - I can *promise* you that the concept of relegation would never enter the minds of any sports franchise owner in America, mainly because no one wants to imagine the New York Mets or Baltimore Orioles suddenly playing AAA-level league teams after a particularly bad season. I personally find that concept honestly amazing and one of the most fascinating aspects of AF - if the NFL played with a relegation system, the Cincinnati Bengals would currently be in danger of being dropped as they are winless thus far in the season. In typical American fashion (well-intentioned concepts poorly thought out), we use draft systems that permit the worst teams an opportunity to pick the best available talent each year to try to give some balance and parity to the leagues - sadly there are holes in that concept, like teams "tanking" (intentionally losing for a better draft position on the premise the rebuilt team will be able to compete right away), or teams like New England who just cheat (getting caught repeatedly) and don't give a shit. The most amusing aspect of the recent trend of teams tanking has been how incredibly pathetic most of those front offices were in their attempts to rebuild - the Miami Dolphins (who pretty much started the season with people *expecting* them to tank) have already given away proven talent on several occasions for future draft picks, yet have (amazingly) won a couple games in spite of this. Meanwhile, the aforementioned Cincinnati Bengals entered the season with much higher expectations, don't seem to be tanking and yet they have plucked defeat from the jaws of victory at every turn. The Indianapolis Colts, whose franchise quarterback retired on the night of their last preseason game, are still fighting for a playoff birth in spite of that considerable handicap - I suppose I bring that up with some pride, given I'm a fan of that squad and a lot of folks might have understood if they had just packed it in after that kind of news. Meanwhile, teams in Cleveland (Browns 2.0) & Phoenix (Arizona Cardinals) have been "rebuilding" for so long that they never truly seem built at any juncture - in the case of the Cardinals there are brief flashes of greatness separated by decades of despair, while the Browns have been mired in mediocrity for so long now that a season winning percentage of .500 would be considered a benchmark moment for the franchise. Point being, I suppose, that regardless of what approach they take, it still requires club management with live brain cells to build or rebuild teams. Folks still seem to be marveling over Leicester City a couple years after their surprise championship, and in my mind that is a feather in the FA's cap.

    A thoroughly interesting piece, but "football" covers a great many codes and I'm sure that clubs formed in the 1860s were not what would be classed as association clubs. Between 1863 (founding of the FA) and 1871 (founding of the RFU) clubs would play a hybrid of the codes. For instance Glasgow clubs Queen's Park and Thistle played in the late 1860s and scores were determined through touchdowns and kicks at goal.

      That depends on of the definition of a stadium. Everton left Anfield in 1892 so Anfield is older than Goodison, but Anfield was earth embankments with a fence around it while Goodison was the first purpose build football stadium in existence. The irony being that Anfield is now a 55'000 capacity modern stadium while Goodison still has 2 stands designed by Archie Leitch. If you look for any of his work ( Villa Park, Anfield, Old Trafford etc) you'll soon get an idea of which ones are still in use today.

    Stoke shouldn't be on this list.
    An EFL Spokesman confirmed that Nottingham Forest are the oldest EFL club not Stoke City due to the lack of evidence regarding Stoke City's claims. In the words of football historian Mark Metcalf.
    “Official records show that a club known as Stoke Ramblers was formed in October 1868 when they played their first game.
    “That club later merged with Stoke Victoria Cricket Club and eventually became Stoke City.
    “Basically, it means that Nottingham Forest are the second-oldest club in the top four divisions and will become the oldest if Notts County are relegated.”
    All of this can be found after like 5 minutes of research lads.
