- From 1990-91 champions Hansa Rostock, who went straight into Germany's Bundesliga, to 13th placed Energie Cottbus who are no longer even in the 3. Liga, HITC Sevens takes a look at the 14 teams who competed in the DDR-Oberliga, or NOFV-Oberliga, which was the top flight of East German football, in the league's final season prior to German reunification.

Day 1: What Would East Germany’s National Team Be In 2021?
They wouldn’t have one, most of the players are considered born in Germany
Here we go again
@@chunkz1187 I think he means a List of the best players born in the former GDR
Toni Kroos would be their best player.
He was born in Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which was a part of East Germany back then
This or the final soviet league idea seem like the next logical step
I think you just made this guy's 2021
It has been 79 days OUR BOY HAS DONE IT
Yessssss
Arthur's prayers has been answered lol
It's been 3000 years...
As a German I wanted to thank you Alfie for making quite a few videos about German football.
I really appreciate it!
Since this is the people's channel
FINALLY ARTHUR HAS GOT WHAT HE ASKED FOR
Hello fellow avatar fan
@@bluest.9320 flameo, hotman
Fun Fact: BSG Chemie Leipzig was founded again by former fans of Sachsen Leipzig and is now also playing in the Regionalliga Nordost. It's a really awesome club with a very left-wing fanbase. They have a huge rivalry with lokomotive leipzig
So it is.
Arthur is having the best 2021 over everyone else so far
Do one for final seasons of where Soviet Super league teams, Yugoslav league, Czechoslovakia.
The DDR Oberliga teams were really done dirty by the DFB when the reunification happened, by only getting two teams in the Bundesliga.
Totally agree,
but
as most top players left for the lights and money in western Germany,
the clubs were left to fend for themselves (when the DFB should of helped them)
and the collapse of business/industry (fewer sponsors)
the clubs would of very quickly been relegated anyway.
quality wise 2 was about right...only dresden managed to survive a few years, while rostock were relegated right away. and leipzig when they got promoted a few years later played one of the worst bundesliga seasons ever
if they put more than 2 they probably would have been slaughtered anyway
@@kalleknall7804 all the best east german players had been poached by then Kalle. Totally unfair, like most east german businesses ruined by the west looking to make a fast buck. With the quality of player left in east Germany you are probably right tho.
As a german i was completely unaware of Matthias Sammer winning the Ballon D'or
Not sursprised since that year everyone paid attention to Ronaldo, he won FIFA Player of the Year so people assume he won the Ballon D'or that year too
Congrats Arthur! Finally got your video
The comment sectio shows how great we are as a community! All are congratulating that one guy :D i am happy about this and for the video!!

Wouldn't do that on Football Daily hahag

THIS IS A DREAM COME TRUE
There it is. Respect from that one subscriber for the consistency.
Small correction: The "er" bit in "Chemnitzer FC" merely indicates possession. The city is named Chemnitz and the "er" makes it the "football club of Chemnitz". Also, the far-right elements at Hansa Rostock have diminished considerably. A few years back, a leader of the local branch of a German far right party was spotted in the stands and he was, let's say... asked to leave by the supporters.
I wonder how much of a PITA some of the pronounciations are for a non-native speaker though :D
Edit: The football history of the city of Leipzig is a huge clusterfuck and might be worth looking at at some point in the future!
Also to mention to the far-right elements at Hansa Rostock changing: they have really some really famous supporters, considered to be more like far-left (e.g. Monchi, lead singer of german punk band FeineSahneFischfilet also as Rapper Materia, who played for the youth teams of Hansa Rostock). Just to bring more (imo) bright moments of eastern germany's fan culture. Also the Carl Zeiss Jena Hooligans are well known to reflect their non-support for neonazi groups in Thüringen.
I like how you use the word "clusterfuck"😂😂
The reason BFC Dynamo was that successful is because they were massivly supported by the StaSi.
Erich Mielke the infamous head of the StaSi was a supporter of the club. Often the best players of other clubs were forced to play for them and when that didnt help sometimes referees would activly favor Dynamo in fear of StaSi-repressions
Correction on 4:27 :
Matthias Sammer first went to VfB Stuttgart, winning a Bundesliga title in 1992 there
Arthur is a legend. For months I've come only sporadically and even more rarely I read some of the comments. Arthur's idea struck my eyes more than once.
WE HAVE OFFICIALLY ARRIVED IN 2021
Alfie ,you dropped this mate 👑
Today's highest ranking East German team never played DDR-Oberliga at all, while Union Berlin did. The SSV Makranstädt, whose license was bought by RB Leipzig, was named BSG Turbine Makranstädt during the GDR times and never played higher than 3rd tier, which was the Bezirksliga at the time.
Most Succesful European players outside of Europe, for example Gignac winning 7 trophies with Tigres
Day 24 : What On Earth Is Going On At Bradford City
Time to make this happen as well!
Out of morbid curiousity I want to know, I hope we don't get a Rangers-esque situation.

Day 1: Every Team from the last Soviet Top League: Where are they now?
Sammer actually transferred to Stuttgart, where he won the Bundesliga in '92, then had a year at Inter Milan, before joining Dortmund.
Loved this video, it makes me want your Energie Cottbus video sooner! Would you consider doing one on the nefarious nature of Dynamo Berlin? How they came to power at the behest of the boss of the Stasi, and the naked nature in how they won 10 in a row is fascinating, looking at it with only a shallow knowledge
Day 1 : Rise and fall of Red Star Belgrade.
How did Zvezda exactly fall 😂😂😂😂😂
They really didnt fall
European Champions 1991. Red Star Belgrade.
@@arannyaroy5601 zvezda never won an European trophy in the 60s. Or 70s. Or 80s.
FK Crvena Zvezda(Red Star Belgrade) fell because of bad things that started happaning in their country.
Just wanted to say keep up tge great content :)
The first two out of the three European finals that East German teams played had less than 5,000 spectators in the stadium, mostly due to travel restrictions put upon East Germans by the DDR government. In the last one, in 1987, there were about 35,000 people to watch Ajax beat Lokomotiv Leipzig in Athens, Greece. Among them were about 600-700 East German fans who after thorough screening by the DDR government were allowed to travel. One of them took advantage of the opportunity and fled.
I really enjoyed this video - thank you Arthur!
any chance you'd do a video on the mls academies in america building a golden generation? it's crazy that the team is finally good out of nowhere and i'd be curious to see how you cover it. big fan!
MLS has moved out if it's retirement league phase, and it's now becoming a good development league.
Yessssss always love a history video and have been looking forward to this one!
On the serious note, thank you Alfie for yet another amazing video you have made. It really makes me proud to be a part of this channel and congratulations to Arthur on his amazing underdog story of preservance, heroism and not giving up!

Great content Alfie, really informative and interesting
Amazing Video! My Grandfather used to play as goalkeeper for Chemie Leipzig, and always told me stories about how things used to be back then, and how different things were, and this really helped give me a broader background to understanding his story! Thank you so much!

I need a 10-hour-video of Alfie saying "Regionalliga" and "Brandenburg".
I'm into this video. Thank you for your dedication, Arthur.
Loved it, Danke!
Great video
Great video, thanks,
You truly are the people’s channel ❤️
Thanks for the good video! I'm glad you took a look at East German football, which was once so strong and is often neglected. However, as a Hansa Rostock fan, it bothers me that this club is only reduced to links to neo-Nazis in foreign reports. We certainly had problems here with the large number of Nazis in the 90s, but in the meantime the fan scene has successfully emancipated itself from right-wing influences. Two years ago, right-wing fan clubs left the Rostock fan club community because it had become "too left-wing" for them. Against this background, it is necessary to correct the former perception of this club!
indeed. rostock and hansa did not overcome the early 90s in the heads of most wessis and the foreign press alike. its a shame
Hallelujah, hallelujah! :))
Thanks, Alfie!
Well researched again, and I believe such videos open you up to other viewers and over 30k viewers in 24 hours is quite good for me.
Some small additions:
- shout out to Erzgebirge Aue (Wismut Aue) long time DDR-Oberliga team and still going well in 2. Bundesliga!
- I believe almost nobody really is sad about Dynamo Berlins fall as they were the Stasi team
- as a Hansa fan, although all true, I believe the right wing politics have since been left behind mostly, Rostock is a beautiful city (oldest university in Northern Europe) with a great coast of the Baltic sea, so I believe we can leave it behind a little bit now
You just made his year brighter Alfie. I can't even imagine that guy's reaction when he sees this.❤️
I am still pioneering for Martin Rollins and he has never played in Germany but you still get a lovely thumbs up for your content
Bro I understand that you’re wary of making these kind of videos as they’re unlikely to get as many views as the more common videos you make.
But I just want to say I love these! I’d much rather watch a 20 minute video of you explaining the intricacies of the Cambodian football league or some scandal in the German 4th tier than the 150th video on Liverpool
This is a great video. I would love you to make a video on the Rise and Fall of Energie Cottbus
Don't know how i've not come across this video before. Ridiculously up my street. Nice one fella
Great video.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY @______________________ You deserve it bro hardwork pays off my dude
i'm just casually chilling on yt and all of sudden i see one of the players of my team on a thumbnail..nice. greetings from Rostock mate
12:16 It's probably also worth to mention that their fans founded a phoenix club, called "BSG Chemie Leipzig", they're now competing in the Regionalliga Nordost.
GUYS WE FINALLY WE DID IT💥💥💥💥
Arthur you deserve it👍👍👍
Ridiculously underrated Alfie. Keep it up!!
This has made my day
Thanks for the video!
Small note: At FC Magdeburg you start with the picture of Jens Härtel. He was Magdeburg trainer from 2014 to 2018, but has been the trainer of Hansa Rostock since 2019. :)
Do: What is happening to Belenenses, they got separated and now are in the low tiers of Portuguese football, one of the 5 Portuguese championship
That would be interesting, Mad-Eye
Well done _________ as that was brilliant. As a young lad back in the early 70's I used to hear the names of some of these teams on European football nights. Under the duvet with the radio pressed to my ear and Medium Wave fading in and out, the grille of the radio leaving marks on my lughole.
Alfie you legend 🙌
The HITC sevens community salutes one of our own. What a champion!
FINALLY. This is fantastic to see.
I love all the German football content recently
As a heathen yank who played soccer as a kid and persevered through the years where even a Sporting News sub didn't guarantee you European Football coverage, I found this very interesting and informative. Thank you! I also have a fair bit of German, English and Irish ancestry with some French so European soccer history in general interests me :)

Best German players in the premier league of all time. (Day 1)
Ballack
@@debayanbhunia7084
No not even close
@@cmenomore8119 Who would you have over him then
@@anzacxlag2606
Trautmann Hamann Lehmann Freund and Ziege just to name a few... maybe even Klinsmann had arguably a bigger career in England than Ballack.
@@cmenomore8119 Well you named 2 goalkeepers a wing back and a striker, so any of them could fit in the team as well.
I wouldn't put Freund of Hamann over him, both had way less caps for Germany and less silverware.
Keep in mind he said best, not best whilst in the premier league/1st division.
Gutes Video!
Never thought I'd see Sven Sonnenberg in an HITC Sevens thumbnail
