    The 757 was notorious for leaving a very turbulent wake, much stronger that expected for its size. This meant that it took up more than its slot in an airport because you couldn't land or launch a smaller plane in its wake for an extended period of time.

    I've long been a fan of the Boeing 757, it's the best single aisle aircraft they produced. It's the aircraft they should have kept alive and improved with newer technology, instead they kept the 1960's technology with the crappy 737 series. I'm a little hesitant to compare an older no longer manufactured aircraft to the new high tech aircraft. One thing we all need to remember is aircraft are only as good on performance as the engines that power them. Boeing and Airbus do not produce engines. I'm not putting my money on the proposed Boeing MMA just yet, the project could be seriously delayed due to all the issues Boeing has with their other models including the 777X project. Buy the time the MMA launches, the market could drastically change again and the need for this type of aircraft may not exist. Great video however.

      "the 757 is a great plane and a lot of the airlines are holding on to them to see what the 797 will offer"
      Sorry, Sir, but that's three errors in one half sentence.
      (i) Aircraft are business tools, and as a business tool, the 757 hardly works anymore. Passenger experience on modern planes (namely the silent A320neo family) is much better, and costs are lower (less maintenance, much less fuel consumption).
      (ii) There are (outside the freighter business) NO airlines that "hold on to them". AMERICAN has already put them to rest, UNITED has announced so, and both have ordered A321XLRs in numbers to officially replace them. DELTA has abstained from announcements, but set the fact, which is orders for (so far) 155 A321neos. ICELANDAIR will decide the replacement by years end, TUI has waved goodbye, CONDOR has emerged from the ashes and ordered A330neos to replace the sistership 767 first, which hints to a future all-Airbus policy. ARKIA, La Compagnie, all have switched to Airbus. What remains? "Trump Force One" springs to mind.
      (iii) Nobody waits for the "797", which seems to be a stillborn and has been long recognized as such. DELTA have talked about it now and again, and ordered 'busses in the meantime. Boeing is in dire straits, they have lost a huge amount of their financial reserves and now must strictly prioritize what to do in development. What they need is a clean sheet successor of the 737. The recent loss of former all-B customer Jet2 was the writing on the wall.

    • @94XJ
      @94XJ 4 года назад

      True, but the 757 is an excellent performing aircraft in which airlines finally saw its value and has been a huge asset to any fleet. For their time they were efficient, had a decent capacity and pretty long range. They can do basically anything and are now being snatched up by cargo lines as quickly as they can get their hands on the things. It's a very relevant aircraft that with a re-engine has the potential to be a better option than the 321.

    • @Utd_YT
      @Utd_YT 4 года назад

      However, it is not possible for a re-engined 757 due to it being such a old aircraft, and Boeing needing to hire back the mechanics of the 757, and they will even need to create new wings for it. It is just not worth it. Hopefully the 797 would be better. If not, there is no way Boeing can compete with the A321XLR.

    The 757s were available with PW2037s, 2040s, RB211-535E and -E4s producing either 37,000 lbf thrust or 40,000 lbf. The Pratts were more fuel efficient, but two spool designs that had vibration problems which required shock mounts. The Rolls were three-spool and far smoother and were hard-mounted to the strut.
    I question the notion that interior pressures are lower on widebodies. Only the 787 to my knowledge has a lower cruise pressure due to the rigidity of its carbon fiber fuselage. A smaller tube is always more rigid than a larger one, and there doesn't seem to be any data to support the video's claim.

    757 was never intended for large production numbers, with the 2b211 available in high thrust, it was supposed to cover hot and high aiprpots like Denver/La Paz, Toncantin, and various other places with short strips, heat , and high alts, at mtow..It was efficient enough to be used on domestic us routes from time to time as well, but it was this market niche that it was made for .
    Turns out it was bone reliable, and a total beast that could out climb anything else, and short runway performance opened up smaller airports to jet travel in smaller cities, instead of passengers needing to go to hubs.. it climbs like an idiot, and as such can avoid weather other planes must go around, and has the range to make a profit on routes that don't fill a 767..
    The planes great performance, go anywhere and make it out of smaller strips even on the hottest days, plus over built and sturdy (the 200 was anyways), speed and range found it soldiering on and in demand years after Boeing should have designed a replacement.. Either way this hot rod is making a come back. as long as fuel prices don't make a huge jump, fuel isn't the only factor in buying a plane.. 757 may very well pay better dividend's on some routes, the 321 neo is un tested, and a 757 wil low hours may well cost so much less than a new air bus, they will gladly eat the fuel cost until the 797 comes out.. besides , who know what kind of backroom deal Boeing will give them if they stay loyal to the brand, they still make money on parts an maint on 757's. A lot of airlines grounded their 757's as the market changed, so there's plenty of good air frames left, plus a lot of corporate birds with low hours on them as well. Awesome plane, glad to see it get a new lease on life..

    The 757 is an incredible aircraft, it’s so powerful and climbs like an absolute beast! The fact that it can operate from short runways close to full capacity with no issues is insane, it’s got good range and is an absolute rocket with RB211’s and I hope it is around for many years to come. Boeing shot themselves in the foot by not upgrading it for the future. The A321LR/XLR is a good modern replacement as it’s the closest thing airlines will get to the 757 (and is a great plane), however the 757 will always win 😍✈️

    • @KlausErmecke
      @KlausErmecke 18 дней назад

      The fate pf the 757 is in a way very similar to that of the A340. Both were great aircraft of their time, but both sacrificed fuel efficiency for the sake of a product feature that subsequently lost importance.
      In case of the A340 it was the back then very restrictive ETOPS regime which made quadjets the necessary means to cross the Pacific (as the 747 had superbly been doing for many years). When regulators eased the ETOPS rules (and twinjets did NOT ditch to the sea in numbers), the quads lost their flair and died in the market. The myth of the 757 fan commmunity is that airlines need their favorite antiquity to operate from hot and high airports - like in South America and the Himalaya. Alone that NO AIRLINE in South America and the Himalaya operates any 757 - or has done so in the last many years.

      There is a huge shift from wide body aircraft to single aisle. The range increases of both the neo and MAX mean that airlines are able to substitute them on many routes. The A321XLR despite is poster range of 4700NM can realistically connect two airports 4200NM away with 168 passengers and 4600NM with 150NM. With 182 passengers range is about 4050NM.
      If a Low Cost Carrier fits in 220 passengers they'll still get 3200-3500Nm which previous neo's couldn't do and they had to use A330/B787/B767. The aircraft can fit in 244 (exit limit) and some Asian LCC will use this.

      For Boeing, yes. But with every A32X Airbus produces, the A32X family aircraft only become more attractive and cheaper for airlines to operate. This is how the 737 became so popular as well. More and more interchangeable parts, more pilots and mechanics already experienced with the aircraft. It's not very exciting for aviation enthusiasts, but a great thing for Airbus and airlines. This way it is also easier for airlines to expand and operating costs to decrease, making medium-haul flights a lot more affordable for passengers. And ask people what they'd rather have; a cheap, regularly comfortable, 5 hour flight or a more expensive, more comfortable 5 hour flight. I think most people would choose the first option.

    I have no clue if Boeing will go through with the 797. I’d actually love to see what a concept of a new generation 757 would look like. However, I guess we will just have to see what the airlines will choose.

    This is no comparison. As a passenger would you prefer to sit in the larger seats with much larger windows with more space for onboard luggage than on any other commercial airplane. If yes to any of these things then the A321 wins.
    Airlines are all about price/cost... So they have to balance purchase or lease cost V maintenance cost V reliability V pilot costs etc.
    Airbus planes are usually more expensive than Boeing planes (can't think why). Also if you already own a plane and the replacement is $60m it is going to take a while to pay back that investment. Anyway currently the only options Boeing could offer to beat the a321xlr would be twin aisle to speed boarding, better cabin pressure (although we do not yet know the Airbus cabin pressure), and cheaper price. A twin aisle pressurised to lower altitude is going to be more expensive to build though.

    The a321xlr fits in as replacement for the 757-200, but it is not much more than that in terms of capacity with a nominal increase in range.
    I think the new Boeing CEO was right to step back and reassess the NMA (797) which is intended to have greater capacity and range than the 757-200 or a321xlr.
    For the a321xlr to match what was the goal of the intended NMA it would need a further stretch increasing the weight and decreasing the range. Further, the a321xlr is already lower thrust than the 757-200 so any increase in capacity and weight will require more power (20-25%). Neither the 757 or a321xlr offer the cargo capability that airlines (in particular Asian airlines) wanted.
    Clearly from reviewing the data obtained from airlines, the new Boeing CEO feels there is a better, more efficient way to achieve the NMA goals to meet that market segment requirements.

      dufonrafal Thanks for your comment. Well you are right and that is the beauty of the A320neo family, it is a very versatile family with different variants to match the needs of different customers. The A330-800neo is a good aircraft but has relatively high costs per seat compared to -900neo, hence it is not a good choice compared to ultra efficient 797. It also has excessive range of 8150nmi. Airbus could however consider developing a regional variant of the jet though it will be deoptimised compared to regular version. According to Boeing’s CEO, they claim that the MAX will fly for decades to come hence the 797 will probably be a small widebody. It is interesting though to see what kind of aircraft will replace the 737 family. Thanks for watching and if you have not done so do consider subscribing and stay tuned for more great videos!

      cardude2 awesomeness Thanks for your comment. Well I believe that another US carrier, American was considering the A330-800neo along with the A321XLR for replacing their 767 fleet. They selected the A321XLR to replace 757, but did not select the A330neo to replace 767. That brings me to the point that while the A330-800neo is more than capable to replace 767, as the aircraft got more capable over the years, it now has excessive range of 8150nmi which is unnecessary for airlines. Also, as it is a shrink of the larger A330-900neo, it has high costs per seat compared to the -900 and if airlines do not require the range, the -900 makes more sense, in which case it is too large to replace 767. Reducing the thrust and takeoff weight of A330-800 Neo will not be adequate as the aircraft is de-optimised with gains only on maintenance costs and flight cycles. Hence airlines are probably still waiting for a better alternative which may arrive soon. Till then the 767 is still a sturdy workhorse. Thanks for watching and if you have not done so do consider subscribing and stay tuned for more great videos!

    Personally I've thought Boeing should have continued with the 717 and 757 over the 737 models. Delta would undoubtedly still be buying newer, more efficient 717s as it would keep them going happily with their MD80 and 90 series (and other 717s) types and could stack up favorably against all the regional jets on the market. The 757 would undoubtedly have gotten modern engines and some tweaks here and there to increase efficiency and make a great aircraft that much better. I get why they were cancelled...at the time neither were selling well...but I cant help but feel like they would have been better positioned in the modern market than the 737.

    How many 757 services required a range the A321XLR can't match? Probably less than 10 percent. Transatlantic flights certainly, but a 767 or A330 would have a lower cost per seat at that range, whereas a 757 would need full fuel tanks divided among not very many passengers (180-190 vs 240-300). Would passengers prefer the cramped seats of a 757 for six hours or the wider seats of a 767 or A330. Underfloor cargo capacity to supplement passenger revenue? A330 thanks. The A321XLR will mostly operate as a sub-fleet within a larger A321neo fleet with airlines, not form the bulk of it. That range also comes with a price tag, and most airlines will find the A321neo perfectly fine for the majority of their single-aisle network

    All these new aircraft are becoming futuristic... amazing. But I have to say... the 757 is an amazing aircraft for its age. I would like to see the Boeing first if they decide to make it. But I think airlines have their doubts after the 737 Max. I am a fan of Boeing. I had the chance to fly on 777 when it came out. It was smooth. You could feel the power when it took off. All the aircraft have only gotten better. I have to say... the Germans know their stuff.. either cars or planes... even down to chainsaws... they are tough to beat.

    Boeing stop production of the 757 too soon. I would be in favour of a "757X". I'm sure with some aerodynamic revisions and modern engines the 757X would be more than up to the task of matching the A321XLR. A 15 percent increase in range will bring the 757 reach to about 4500 nautical miles without the center line fuel tank!

The 757-300 was already a huge disappointment for Boeing with only 55 being made. Uh, not. The 757 is not replaceable , there's no aircraft in the offing that compares. Boeing made the biggest mistake by ending the production. Just needed composite re do, new generation engines and wings. Less expensive than a new aircraft type , and it would sell huge. Hopefully Boeing will go ahead with a 767 re do. The ground clearance and sleek look of the 757 has no competition. Watching it take off out of Jackson hole when I do my summer temporary assignment is just a thing of aerodynamic perfection. The xlr is close but no bananas. Will say the a320 s interior is better as is most of the Airbus aircraft. The a350 is simply unarguably one of the most stunning aircraft in the sky, it's just beautiful.

      Thanks for your comment. Yep the 757 had a unique blend of size and range but what gives it the edge over anything else in the market is its reliability and most importantly, performance! The 757 can takeoff fully loaded from any small airport in the United States before landing in any small airport in Europe. Having said that, with airports being upgraded, the XLR with its high lift system should have adequate performance for most routes. Thanks for watching and if you have not done so do consider subscribing for more epic comparisons on the way!

      I'm in agreement, the only thing is the airframe was overbuilt , and as such a fair bit heavy.. she was made to take steep take off's, and get slammed on to the runway in hot and high, short strips.. great margin of safety, but a clean sheet re design if you want to lighten it up, but then loose the performance (visa vis A310/ or boeing 720).. then you have a small 767..
      Airlines liked em because you couldn't break them, it cruised above other air traffic 40,000 feet, and was hugely over powered , so you could get out of crappy runways mtow on hot days , and have great performance on approach.. you pay for it in fuel.. flew one home from Europe in the 90's , it was small, but RB 211 made a great sound, made the a340 I was on feel like a total slug, but the A/C blew nice n cold on her so comfort was good.. thing looks like a mantis..

    I think we can assume that the 797 (or whatever) will not happen any time in the next decade. Boeing has 3 earners: 737, 787 and new 777X
    737:
    MAX killed the 737 and exposed Boeing to the world its change from aerospace engineer to share marketeer and destroyed most people's confidence in the brand. Boeing is shedding cash at an unsustainable rate and it hasn't even started Class Action claims fro 346 families, refunding of lease payments and loss of earnings from airlines and breach of contract claims. No orders have been cancelled or aircraft returned while Boeing is funding these losses but the day that stops watch the airlines get real nasty.
    787:
    It will never recoup its development costs despite Boeing using an accounting method that spreads those costs across 'forecast' sales (to create early profits and share price). It is therefore losing some $20 Mn per aircraft right now.
    777X:
    GE are struggling to deliver their GE9X. The airframe recently failed a mandated stress test where a cargo door blew off and the rear fuselage cracked apart. Amazingly (given the self certification row over the MAX) Boeing initially tried to hide it but have said 'oh it only just failed so its OK'. They have clearly learned nothing about perception in the public's eye. But even if FAA grant certification it will not start earning cash until late 2021. And then carry a 'per aircraft' R & D cost like the 787.
    We better not mention the KC-46 boondoggle ...
    Boeing is in a shit place of its own making because it was managed by ex McDD money men. What goes round comes round.

      Also:
      Boeing Starliner has had massive setbacks due to faulty code that might have led to the loss of a crew had the craft been physically piloted.
      SLS: Absolute and complete shitshow of a program. This is Boeing at its worst, milking the taxpayer till the last penny. There is no other explination as to why the damn rocket has cost so much when it is practically re-using legacy systems other than Boeing and other contractors deliberately inflating costs and mismanaging the project to earn more money.

      @@oneskyflyer in terms of performance, it'll depends on which aspects you look into. The NMA being a new plane from the drawing board will most definitely offer better cabins, larger windows, higher cabin pressure etc. It will also most certainly feature a bigger wing for better payload & field performance and a large enough fuel tank to make its range more superior than the A321XLR. However if we were to look in terms of fuel burn per trip and fuel burn per passenger of the NMA, the best possible outcome is that the NMA matches the fuel burn per passenger of the A321XLR. This does not take into account the higher crew cost and airport landing fees which would ultimately attribute to a higher CASM for the NMA. Coupled with the higher purchase price of the NMA, boeing will need to give really steep discounts in order to attract sufficient orders for the smaller NMA variant.
      The overall success of the NMA now hinges on the success of the larger NMA variant as a true replacement for the B767 aircraft and opening up new markets. However I'm highly sceptical about it due to the 4500nm range previously speculated. Unless an ER variant is introduced to the NMA, I doubt the NMA will be able to outperform the A321XLR.
