- How to / Tutorial: 'Universal Chamber' for Taekwon-Do Kicking
In this video Carl van Roon explores the advantages of utilising a 'universal chamber' when kicking, particularly off the lead leg. The basic alignment and posture is discussed first before delving into a breakdown of how to throw 4 main kicks from the universal chamber position including: side kick, lead leg turning kick, hook kick and high turning kick. The efficiency and deception advantage of using this position is discussed, with emphasis on how to bypass the opponent's defence and take advantage of operating at long-range. Several other options are also explored towards the end of the video including 'lifting and shifting' into the kick (sliding) and throwing consecutive kicks (multiple kicks without putting the leg back down into a stance between kicks).

11 x World Champion - International Coach - Masters Degree in Sport Science
These are the single best taekwondo tutorials I have ever seen. If I ever go to wherever it is you're located, you'd better believe I'm taking some classes.
Auckland, New Zealand. I travel frequently for seminars however:
March 16-17 I'll be coaching in Australia for TKD and long distance striking for MMA.
Late April / May I'll be in Germany, Spain, England, Wales and Scotland
Then more later in the year
fantastic to receive content from a competing athlete! i'm not even a taekwon-do practitioner but the insights you're giving apply to many other martial arts. also, really appreciate that you are giving proper theoretical explanations, and not just some magical tricks looking tips to uncritically swallow... double thumbs up to you, my friend!
i might just add that it is a bit sad not to see your feet in this video as the variations between your kicks surely hinge a lot upon the twist in your supporting leg... but well └(=^‥^=)┐
@@MrDzeta Yes it's a good point and one I thought of too retrospectively. I think that could be a good topic for a future video.
And thanks for tuning in!
@@VanRoonMartialArts Hi, sir! Your videos are very helpful, not for me, but my 8-year-old son who is a taekwondo player. I try to learn as much as I can so I can teach him more.
If you could write a short word of encouragement for my son, Leon, I would really appreciate it. I also think it will go a long way in his learning journey.
Thank you so much!
You sir, are a martial scientist! You consistently put out excellent content. Keep it coming!
Love it! I remember a Maverick movie with James Garner where he told a friend "I'm not fast (at drawing his gun), just faster than you." As a skinny person, who's also a 4th black in Kyokushin, I've said that many times to tough guys picking on me.
Awesome video! I'm a coach in WT sparring but the only thing is I've been out of the game for some 15 years, a lot has changed since I've competed. I love how you break it down!
I have almost watched all your tutorials. I need more! :)
Fantastic videos Sir, thank you for sharing!
1 million Likes for this video! Good job, bro. Keep up the good work!
Brilliant instruction. Well done!
Wish I had long legs like these dude. This guy got great kicking skills...I'm 53 wish I could go back 20 yrs...gave up on karate back in the 80s...regret I stopped...chamber, lol word never used back then...😁! Great video!
Thank you! It's never too late :D
You're language style contributes to my self-slow uptake thanks
So much great information and techniques Thank you sir!
Another amazing video Sir 🙏🥋👊
You are a great teacher and athlete Karl, I am a martial arts instructor and practitioner myself and I really appreciate you give people super valid informations instead of crap like many others. Cheers!
Thank you. I'm glad I can be of assistance. What art do you teach?
@@VanRoonMartialArts Basically traditional Karate and a bit of sport fighting for kids
You are an EXCELLENT instructor! Your tutorials break everything down better than most. thank you!

Thank you sir very much from deep of my heart , your lessons are really helping me as I'm new to martial arts in general , your explanations very clear, simple, and informative.
Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you can find value in the teaching.

Great tutorial 👍
Excellent thank you
hope for next video about training the universal chamber. Great video for learning
Glad you liked it!
I love your video content and tutorials very kool!🥋
Thank you 🙏
You are the best!
Great video.
Great video! When will the "lift & shift" tutorial be out?
Thank you for your sharing.
I have done both karate and TKD. When I did TKD, we most often turned into the kick for a bit more range. I like what Van Roon said about this. Now I have another way to the it "right!" This is a good vid.
Brett Barager glad I could be of service!
Great video mate, thank you for that!
My pleasure!
Great video. Very well put together with excellent teaching. Really looking forward to your future content. Hard to find ITF focused instructional videos since GNT moved away from that kind of content.
Thanks for tuning in! Glad to be of service.
Your teaching method is really good and good luck with more subscribers...
Thank you!
Excellent video
Thank you
Your kicking is awesome
Very interesting, I will remember this lesson
Thanks for tuning in!
Thanks for the Advice, i appreciate it.. I always Adapt the Techniques and Style depending to the Fight Situation.. BTW you should do Videos for: Improve the kicking Height, Kicking Flexibility and the Reversal Kick
Amazing! Could you please do a video on how to actually drill these? How to structure a training session? I have really crap flexibility and hip flexors from sitting down a lot. I really want be be able to head kick. How do I start my journey?
wow. I've,just found this video.
and I learnt a lot. especially the reverse kick. thank you so much.
done subscribed. 🙏🙏
more video Please🙏🙏
Becxz Ramos glad you’ve found value in the content here :) more coming!
Van Roon Martial Arts thank you So much.
master!!!
The sequence for kicking ( rise with the front arm and then lift and shift ) makes it easier to perform most techniques and to hit, because you can cover quite some distance with shifting.
For sure! :D
Hi - that got me thinking [ie. the unpredictability of it]; so if going against someone like that, then going into a 'full crouch' (the way they'd describe it in boxing - I personally like to refer to it as 'torso bend'): but going into that will give them only two choices. ie. either upper left or right.
Yes it's a similar concept in boxing!~
Great
I'm a TAGB student. Your teaching style is very similar to my instructor. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you. Great organisation! Give my best to your school
@@VanRoonMartialArts I will thank you. My sons are taking their Red Tag grading with Grand Master Walton this weekend, and the universal chamber will be useful in my next comp if I can crack it in time.
Very helpful 👍. Where have you got that human punching bag from?
to be young again and flexible...Lol, Outstanding job young sir.
Superb video - a little tricky for us 40-somethings who struggle to get that chamber much above waist height, but inspirational nonetheless.
I totally understand. Keep striving. The same principles apply even if you are executing kicks to the knee, shin, hip or ribs for self-defence etc.
Great content!!! How about a video for those of us who are big, old, slow (think over-the-hill linebacker) and inflexible (side kick is limited to lower rib height)? ....seriously. My only advantages are length, power and durability; and the last two are not helpful in point sparring.
Thanks for your comment! I will take that into consideration for future videos. Perhaps I can discuss mobility based practices and how this is where flexibility and strength intersect.
Don't despair! Even a small amount of progress each session is great.
Keep it up
stretch
Yes, daily. Very incremental gains have been made over sixth months.
Looking forward to it. 'mobility based practices and how this is where flexibility and strength intersect' I have no idea what this means, but i am intrigued.
@@AL-og4sp Obviously Mr. Van Roon will have a better answer than me, but heres my take: Flexbility increases your range of motion, but in this new, increased range of motion you will lack muscle strength. You need to combine both strength training and flexibility training. Flexibility can be though of unlocking new range of motion, but that new range needs to be strengthened and conditioned.
If you are very serious about martial arts and kicking in particular, check out elastic steel. I've purchased the full set and it's spectacular.
Mr. Van Roon is of course incredibly skilled, but Paul Zaichik is unmatched when it comes to Kick conditioning.
Hi Carl, your videos are incredibly informative! One issue that I'm facing is that i tend to lean back too much when i kick and that reduces my momentum and its harder to move faster forward. I notice this happens with almost all of my kicks. How can i get better balance and actually carry my momentum forward morem efficiently? Could you advise please?
Bom jogo de perna !
Van that 's cool 💪💪💪💪💪👍👍👍👍👊👊👊👊👊👊
Thank you
@@VanRoonMartialArts no man I m Just a fan
很有用,谢谢
不客气!
Great video. Has just gotten into sparring (have mye second tournament in a couple of weeks) and your videos are a great help for practicing techniques.
Could you maybe do a video about offensive v defensive roles in sparring? What would you recommend? Pros / cons, and against different types of opponents?
Thank you. I will be covering more of this type of material in the future :D
Van Roon Martial Arts Thanks for answering. Ill keep watching.
Hello from algeria and OSS
Hello Van, Can we pratique these kicks techniques without dummy? and I really like how you explain your stuffs by incorporated many dimensions to it.
Thank you! Yes you can practice all of the techniques in my videos with paddles, shields, pads etc or even in shadow sparring on the air
thzt was very nice. you showed it very well but wish i could have also seen the placements of your base foot. That and what kind of stretching do you recommend to get the height for head shots. in other words what goes before the chamber, and can we stop a jujitsu person with a chambered kick? Thank you again. extremely helpful.
Hi Jim - I've had a few people mention that! I'll try to ensure I take more footage of full length shots to allow for observation of details such as the supporting foot etc.
Perhaps the stretching / strengthening are good topics for future videos! Thank you for your feedback.
CvR
I practice WTF Taekwondo, but I have never seen this position before? Did I miss anything or is the "Universal Chamber" an ITF Taekwondo thing?
However this video described it very well, thank you :D
By the way: Thank you for fixing the sound volume ;D
Thank you. Yes I attempted to improve sound quality here and welcome your feedback as always.
The 'universal chamber' is not technically an ITF term but it is one that myself and others have adopted to describe this position. In today's WT game this approach is vital and it's amazing how creative the new generation are with their chambering and combinations.
What’s the “lift-and-shift” sequel called? - can’t find it
This is what Bill Wallace have been doing since the 70’s
Yes! He's a legend. I met him at the Kickboxing World Championships in 2005 in Hungary :D
Very good 😁 feet rocks 😁😃👍
Hey im late but do u pivot the back foot while ur chambering?
Excellent video. I've just discovered you. Could you post a streching video for men in their fifties with very limited flexibility. Well done . Very Impressive kicks.
It's called stretching
my hips Carl, my hips jam man
What kind of stretching do you need for that chamber? I find that i turn into a back kick when kicking. I can only do the left side split
One way that helps is to stretch in a position known as a hurdlers stretch. Perhaps google that... I like to call it a universal chamber stretch :D Perhaps the topic of a future video...?
@@VanRoonMartialArts Yes please 😀
I'm 53 years old and to keep my flexibility I should make exercises every day if not, I lost flexibility to high kicks. Is frustrated
May I know what is the dummy called? Been looking for one online but couldn't find any. Probably because I don't get the name right.
Bob... which stands for Body Opponent Bag. Look at Century Martial Arts or Asian World of Martial Arts.
Kevin Belden thanks so much for responding. I truly appreciate that!
Like Bill "superfoot" wallece!
Yes exactly! I had the pleasure of meeting 'Superfoot' at WAKO Kickboxing World Championships in 2005. A true gentleman and inspiration to many!!
Hey bro why you not upload the video
Coming soon! Thanks for your patience :D
@@VanRoonMartialArts we will waiting
I feel that my legs are my best parts to attack
Very hard to tell which kick is coming. The "Universal Chamber" makes all the difference.
It's deceptive isn't it!!
Absolutely. Sorry if I'm wrong, but it looks better than boxing jabs. I can always try to dodge a direct punch or a hook one because the opponent has to move to reach me. But with the Universal Chamber, at least for me, is hard to say which kick is going to be.
@@joaoluistavares6046 I think it all depends on the quality of the boxer! :D Some are obvious, while the skilled ones are very hard to read!
@@VanRoonMartialArts It's true.

4 kicks 1 motion. Like superfoot
Please kick me 😻
This shit is so basic I was doing all of those kicks back in 2012 when I was still an orange belt beginner.
