Fabulous footage and whilst I doubt the pig and weta had any interaction at all, the underwater footage of the weta is phenomenal. They're remarkable creatures.
In case anyone wants to know, no mammals are native to New Zealand apart from bats and seals. Edit: this includes marsupials and monotremes, those are introduced too

No this is New Zealand and see the size of the stream, just blind trout and very small fish. Only an Eel would worry the weta and the Eels hunt at night.

What an amazing animal! But there is one thing that really does make me worry for it. I happen to know that ALOT of freshwater fish species would see it as easy prey. A delicious land insect would be seen as a rare delicacy to a hungry trout. Nonetheless I guess that's just nature. Once again BBC Earth delivers the goods, thank you so, so much for uploading these wonderful videos.
idk which is more amazing , this insect who find out how to survive by hiding in the water or the guy who find out there is an insect who does that....
I'm not a huge fan of bugs but I always thought Wetas were pretty cool. We sadly dont seem to get them on our property anymore. I think neighbourhood cats and other animals must have eradicated them entirely. The little guys are also really freaking strong. Like what you hear about ants lifting 200x their weight or whatever but as a relatively big bug.
I noticed this...because there is talk in biology circles about the similar niches they occupy...the weta is a large insect that forages like mice and is really quite smart, so it serves almost like an "invertebrate mouse". Get it?
A mouse was a poor choice of analogy... Mice tend to illustrate an introduced species capable of carrying disease and damaging native ecosystems, neither of which are problems caused by the weta.
Massive black market in illegally smuggled organisms, wouldn't be surprised to find smuggled weta in China(male & female) then bred in captivity for harvest. Those pigs must do so much damage to the ecosystems over there.
What about Maoris, they are mammals
So, Hobbits arn't mammals?
yup and also the wild goats too. they strip the native trees of their bark and the tree ends up dying

@BloomingBubbles
No, I meant they filmed it separately and then edited the video.

That Weta deserves an Oscar for that performance. I bet he even did his own stunts.
Insect logic: run past 16 climbable trees to plunge in a river full of predatory fish.
That is evolution at its best.

Money grubber logic actually, under the guise of science. The only thing that was true in that video is that Weta's are good in the water.

"the tusked Weta is New Zealand's equivalent of a mouse"
Note to self: Never travel to New Zealand. *Ever.*
Why not
Because some people don't care for insects and if the insect is let's say "mouse-sized" well, that is the last straw.
New Zealand is Insect Land. Tons of them, filling every niche possible. None of them are dangerous, though.
they taste good tho
