    I didn't know weta were endangered. This is incredible! I am so happy the island owners have dedicated their land to the weta and other species instead of bulldozing the forest to make a big house or something. I wish I lived in NZ.

      +Severine The Panda Specifically the Giant Wētā which are sadly only found on Great Barrier Island and some neighboring islands. They are good natured, harmless friendly and peaceful. Their cousins, the smaller yellow tree wētās are a lot more common and are found on the Main Islands. And while they're occasionally hissy, territorial and sometimes aggressive, for the most part they're also harmless and non-toxic 👍😊

    All the people saying they've seen them or that they're common are just seeing other species and getting them confused. We have the same problem in Texas where a certain species of salamander is endangered and yet I have old farts walk up to me and tell me they're so common they use them as fishing bait. Species are not interchangeable and just because something that looks similar is common doesn't meant the endangered thing is not worth saving.

      i think people develop a liking to insects when they are bigger than usual. probably because we feel more at ease when we can keep an eye on them and they cant scurry around as easily. my biggest beef with insects is that they can suddenly just "jet" and start crawling under your sleeve or something...

      Not too many people are deep into these insects to realize that both Grasshoppers and Crickets each have their own biological suborders under the main order Orthoptera, each comprising of many families - Wetas belong to the cricket family 'Anostostomatidae'. FTW😄

    I wish more people could look past their instincts and see that bugs are really cool! Unless it's something like a termite that can knock a house down, insects are harmless little fellas who'll let you appreciate them as long as you don't annoy them. Heck, a wasp or bee that stung you probably thought of you the same way you think of a fly that lands on your leg.

    • @OtterLakeFlutes
      @OtterLakeFlutes 5 лет назад

      They can jump... it's a sluggish but effective jump, and apparently they just need to feel very threatened. If you moved some rakes or shovels in the garden shed in Rotorua in about 1977 you'd get a big, roach-like weta on you, and not from crawling slowly. I guess they'd get a bit squeezed or squished and freak out enough to hop. Also they might have been heated up more in the tin shed in the sun and be a bit more energetic.

    This is an interesting and informative presentation, which is supportive of NZ wildlife, thank you. However, it was difficult for me to stay with it because of the consistent mis-pronunciation of both Weta (which is supposed to have macrons over both vowels, which elongates them) and Punga (the g is not sounded, but the "ng" is considered a single consonant and pronounced as in "sing", said without a distinct "g" at the end).
