This is actually one of the few videos where I can hear difference between tube preamp/modeller into SS power amp into real cab. Both sounds really good. Thanks
8:00 Wow, that crunch sound is so saturated and juicy I could sit in it for days lol Thanks Rabea, for bringing these soundscapes into the guitar-world, its a truly unique skill that requires very sensitive ears and emotional imagination and you are the best at it.
Just wanted to come here and say; damn Bea.... you MURDERED that track in the that Neural DSP ad that has been going around.. I totally dig everything about it, the tone, the guitar, your brilliant phrasing and riffs that some how manage to keep getting better and better and better, and your awesome style of course, you're just a cool dude.. and one of my favorite guitarist on the platform at the moment! Keep it up brother, and best wishes!!
This is the answer for older guys, or someone with health issues that ust can't lug the heavy stuff anymore. Most amps in this format sound tinny. This thing sounds great and will be my next purchase (old guy).
I have the 170 with my kemper and it sounds glorious. The eq is killer and really needed if you Want your direct signal to be intact and sculpt your tone throught you cab
I actually have one of these I got a few weeks ago. I running a Friedman BeOd Deluxe pedal into it into a 2x12 V30 loaded cab. It sounds killer and gives you a ton of options. I'm also using an Aby switch to achieve a wet/dry rig with a Bugera v22 1x12 combo (JJ tube upgrade) sounds amazing and does a lot.
Dude, I have the 170 and a BE-OD Deluxe as well. Do you crank the volume on the pedal or the PowerStage? I’ve been wondering if running a tube preamp pedal would give it a more ballsy feel.
@@zobotrombie I run the volume on the pedal as high as I can without clipping. Then I use the powerstage if I need it louder. Typical I run the pedal volume around 1 o'clock and the powerstage around 2 oclock for full band. If I'm practicing I just turn the powerstage down to 8oclock ish.
For what it's worth... I'm plugging my Victory V4 pedal (Countess) into a Mooer Baby Bomb going into a 1x12. This is at home, to manage volume.. but still it's too loud going past 9 o'clock on _both_ the Baby Bomb and the Victory. Anyway... Specially the sounds with more gain, it sounds kinda flat. Maybe I could adjust it with on the Victory a bit, but what I've done is looked at some power-amp VST sims, what they are doing in the EQ department. I then emulated the curve in a 10-band EQ on my Helix Stomp. And this really brings it to live and makes it more enjoyable to play at descent volumes. I want to try to keep my chain analog if possible, so I have a Amptweaker Depthfinder in the mail to replace the Helix EQ in this. This only shows how important it is to have some EQ shaping on your poweramp. The Duncan stuff (even the 170) is quite expensive compared to Mooer Baby Bomb, EHX 44 Magnum. Heck, even to a Palmer Macht 402 19" rack power amplifier with Resonance + Presence controls. So.. the Duncan SS poweramps are quite expensive. but they have the EQ that is really important. Even if my Mooer Baby Bomb + Depthfinder works out, I'm still _almost_ at the price of a Duncan Powerstage 170. So in the end they aren't that expensive for what you're getting. I'm also adding a Moooer Yellow Comp to add some light optical compression, to get that feel in there :P. Live, I'm just plugging my V4 into the FX loop of my DSL50 so it doesn't need all that. But for at home - at lower volumes - it really keeps it nice to play!
Yeah the SD power stage are as great as they are overpriced (for what they are). Meh, I guess the package is cool right. But if you can afford to throw some money they are really good.
@@roballan5952 my situation was that 1) I had no (usable) amp at home. 2) Any tube amp to really benefit from the tubes has to be turned up quite a bit 3) that results in unusable volume. 4) so that requires me to use attenuator, which (often) brings it's own EQ issues. so, I could go new amp head + attenuator but that would be too pricey. Getting a (_good_) tube preamp with a SS poweramp seemed like a nice approach. Yes, I use my HX Stomp as cab emulator or my DAW to play with headphones or over my PA speaker, but for home use I want a real cab in the room. And Mick from TPS has put me on a quest to keep my signal chain analog :s.
On occasion, the exact thing I'm shopping around for gets demoed by someone like Rabea. Trying to rig up my Kemper w/cabs for jamming at home. The powerstage line is my primary interest, and although I haven't purchased one yet, I do have a couple complaints. I wish all models of the powerstage allowed you to bypass the EQ. Also wish removing the EQ also took the EQ out of the entire signal chain (not just the DI out) so the EQ wouldn't affect my speaker tone. It's cool to have it but would be nice to take it out, just to know that my cab tone is being colored by one less thing (I know you can set the knobs to 0, but it's still in the back of my mind). Lastly, wish they offered stereo on more than just the 700w model.
Hi Andy. Just got a unit of the 170 for my Kemper and I have a doubt; is it normal the ventilator is always spinning (never stops)?. As well, it’s not too loud before passing 12 o’clock (using it with a HB 2x12 at 8 ohms). Thanks!
@@masamuneyoto8838 yes it’s normal for the ventilator to always be spinning, it’s just to ensure it doesn’t overheat. Mine is pretty loud when I get past the halfway point as well, but below there it’s more suitable volumes for at home. I’ve used it live before to power an onstage cab for stage volume, with the main out going to the FOH and it did the job well, but the power amp did need to get cranked up towards max to do so
You said you've not used these but you've championed the victory version off this . It's the same thing essentially . Great demo as always and brilliant guitar work 🎸🤘🏻⚡️
I think it's more aimed at people wanting to keep an analog signal chain. Putting ir's in it would up the price and add digital to the live out giving it some latency. You can hook up your own IR cab emulator to the line out if you disable the cab sim, right?
Joris Mak if it’s aimed at people wanting an analogue signal chain then what’s the point in the IR what I get from this product is it’s trying to do it all but is missed the one most important thing when it comes to sending a modellers signal to a desk and that is IR’s it’s cool to have the live signal and direct signal split but if you can’t stick an IR on the direct signal you lose a lot of versatility not all artists that use modellers are going to want a 4x12 cab sim for example some might want an AC30 cabinet sound. And yes you probably could use an external cab sim if you turned the built in one off but if you could load IR’s that one less pedal and cable and power spot you wouldn’t need, It was nearly perfect but missing the off it’s not if someone made this with an IR loader built in that’s it you have the best on the market and tbh if they stuck an IR loader in the PS700 or pedalbaby that would be even better
I think it’s an afterthought, but it can get you out of a bad situation if you show up to a gig with a bad/faulty back line and going straight into FOH would be the best option for you. In the case that happens, you have that available to you so it’s not a bad feature to toss on top of it. Most people who use modelers or preamp pedal solutions usually have an IR loader of some sort for FOH applications, and adding that to the Power Stage would need a USB port, and editing software to load and to tweak with hi/low cuts to taste. That would jack the price up quite a bit.
i think the time will come for your perfect rig opportunity. Evolution on music technology is impressive these days . i can imagine one day don’t realise how much more greatness we can achieve. like the limit is somewhere. what do ya think? if there’s no price just what is possible & combinations. Right now we are already in heaven
Great playing! And solid all around demo. I'm very interested in pedalboard amps. I don't have space in my house for one more amp as I own a factory's worth already, and have always been open to efficiency, i.e., NOT lugging the full stack to the gig with the tiny stage and using a fifteen watt combo instead. The pedalboard amp is the next stage of evolution for me. When I can just plug into the house system, why not?
The biggest question for me is...have they fixed the design flaw from the 170, where they put the smoothing cap on the wrong side of the power switch? The result of that was that if you switch it off and unplug, there's still a charge across the pins of the power socket (or the mains plug, if you unplug from the mains first) and you'll get a nasty shock if any fingers go near it within 30s or so.

It has the power and _some_ eq to handle a direct signal, but it really is meant to have a preamp in front of it. Even something like the 'joyo American clean' at the end of your pedal board together with this will make a nice 'pedal platform amp'.
Don’t most people playing live with modelers use powered FRFR speakers or go straight to front of house? Why would you need this for a modeler unless you just really want to play through standard, passive guitar cabinets? I could see more of a use for it as a pedal platform.
I use my Powerstage with a Fractal AX8 live and don't run straight to front of house with it. Using the Powerstage does give you the option to run a signal to a guitar cabinet on stage and one signal to front of house at the same time if you want to, though. In the Fractal signal chain you can set up a splitter so you can turn off the impulse response to your guitar cabinet, but have it turned on to send to the front of house signal. The Powerstage works really well with pedals also. It's a really cool thing to have.
Looks, really nice and sounds awesome and I also think it is more geared towards the ,,classic'' pedal guy. If you have a Helix, a Kemper, an Axe FX etc. you basically just need the amplification without anything else because Aux-In, Phones-Out and a Balanced-Out are already there. Being quite honest 50 Watts is often more than enough. For amplifying my ,,silent'' rig I use my beloved Vox MV50 Clean and until now I didn't run out of headroom even on big stages. If I do I surely know that there are some very nice solutions out there. P.S.: I think the Line-Out sounds really ,,mastered'' as the line-outs often do with less bottom end, but it is often what you need on stage. As always awesome review, keep up the good work! Cheers from Germany 🤘
Can I use something like this with amp sim software? Guitar to A.I. input, through amp sim software, A.I. output to Powerstage, and so on into a cabinet? Would latency be too much of an issue or do you think I'd be able to compensate in Logic somehow? Thanks for any info, I'm kinda lost on if this would work for me.
You would need to get some kind of DI box to act as a bridge between your audio interface output into the Powerstage input. The audio interface will have a line level output and guitar amps are looking for an instrument level input. The DI box will convert the signal to the proper levels.
Bra; you’ve been working with Neural..... let’s all get together, and get them to create an FX only plugin, that works with all their amp sims? It’s complicated if i want the Omega amp, but the Nolly effects.... Work this out mate? Thanks from the States!!
IDK if it is just my unit or not but when I go direct, BOTH the phones level and main level knobs do NOT control the volume......every time I use it direct I have to use either my interface's level control or a mixers gain knob to control how loud it is.......i hope mine isn't defective
I use the Powerstage 170 and the Orange Pedal Baby 100 with my Helix to power a 2x12 cab. I found that for high gain tones a pretty drastic high cut is needed in the Helix otherwise it's way too harsh. That didn't seem to come through in this vid though.
@@markvandergiessen3158 I'd recommend the Seymour Duncan powerstage 200. You get 4 EQ knobs. The 4 being the presence knob plus all the other features seen here.
Hey guys. Probably a silly question BUT… do I need to use a proper speaker cable from the V4 into the power stage or just a “normal” cable? Thanks in advance…
Every time you say "Kraken", my brain keeps hearing "crackin'". So I think "it's nice that he has a crackin' pre-amp, but what brand is it?" Then, veeery slowly, my brain catches up😂
I've been using this for a while now. Played gigs with it from clubs to larger fest stages, etc., it's worked fine for me so far. Plenty loud enough, that's for sure.
Not that well, since the iridium is meant for its (builtin) IRs right? This is for pushing a regular guitar cab, so you need to disable iridium cabs if that's possible. For the price of iridium, you can look at other (analog) preamps, like the victory v4 stuff, Amptweaker pedals, revival drive, etc... I'd that's your thing of course, otherwise go for it.
Joris Mak not true. You can definitely plug it into your amps return input and keep your cab sims on. Sounds and feels great. Some rules can be broken. I made sure before I bought it. There’s a guy John Cordy who did it first.
@wild stallions for me its because I am looking for unbiased reviews prior to purchasing, RUclips is my research platform, I'm not watching just for enjoyment and entertainment.
I have the PowerStage 170 and have been looking for a demo of it paired up with a Kraken pedal. Thanks, Bea! Does anyone know if the Kraken takes pedals well? Do dirt pedals stack nicely with channel 1?
I'm just asking because I'm stupid, but when I plug that Powerstage 200 straight into one or two cabinets, do they have to be 16 Ohm cabs, or could I use a 4 Ohm cab and an 8 Ohm cab for instance?
Sorry I know this is an older comment but for anyone still curious about this.....I was using a Crown XLS for a while as well as a JBL amp to run my modelers through, and it worked ok but it was just kinda sterile and not really practical in terms of hauling them around. The Powerstage doesn't sound or feel as cold and sterile to me, of course the EQ and Presence control helps with that tremendously too. But the fact that it's much lighter and easier to take with me than that damn Crown amp was a definite plus too.
Great video Bea. One question though - how loud does this thing get? Class D amp ratings are so misleading - they are never as loud as the rating would suggest. With this rated at 200 watts, would you compare it to a 30 watt tube amp? a 50 watt tube amp? What do you think?
Into a stack cranked to 10 will be too loud for pretty much all gigs as for clean head room it doesn’t break up it’s a power amp the Eq is just match the amp to a cab.
Hey brother, can I ask you a question? I’ve been looking for power amp to run my HD500X through and into a cab. I previously had it running into DT50 head using the L6 cable. My Head blew which sucks because I really loved that head. Anyways would you recommend the 200 to use as the power stage for my HD500X into a cab. Thanks, hope to hear back from you.
I would recommend the 200 to use with your HD500X for sure. Powerstage and modelers work really well together. I've got a Fractal FX8 and a Line 6 POD X3 Live that sound awesome with them. Plus, you can have everything on one pedalboard instead of carrying around another full-size amp head.
Jesus Christ Bea gotta say you keep lookin more and more trim each vid, keep it up you weapon you’re lookin great!

I had a question about this setup: if the powerstage is 200W, how is not blowing out the V112-V which is rated at 60W?
Electricity is potential not constant. So turning it up to max will blow it up
Depends on the ohms of the speaker. It's only 200 watt at 4 ohm, 100 watts at 8 ohm, and 50 wats at 16 ohm.
It will...LOL. These ratings are stupid
I think the phone knob only works for phone out, not for XLR out.

They are doing the Quad-Cortex (kina like the helix) and I speculate that a software version will lunch after the lunch of the QC
IDK if it is just my unit or not but when I go direct, BOTH the phones level and main level knobs do NOT control the volume......every time I use it direct I have to use either my interface's level control or a mixers gain knob to control how loud it is.......i hope mine isn't defective
Where would you put an omni cab sim if you wanted to use that instead of the onboard? last pedal right before the powerstage?
Might be a dumb question buuut, Can you use this for plugins as well?
Please tell me how to achieve that pushed clean tone on a Blackstar HT Stage 100 :)
Just so you all get the right idea about the size of the Power Station, I've shook Bea's hand ( at NAMM) and it's NOT small. LOL.
Are you sure the speaker emulation is an IR, because it sounds like an analog simulator (fizzy and undefined with high gain)...
So how does this compare to say, the victory v4 duchess? I really just need something I can run a VH4 pedal into...
So if you turn off the EQ it’s turns into a clean channel basically?
I'm not a Strat guy. I normally don't like the single coil sound. But YOUR Strat with the new pickups sounds awesome.
bea makes everything sound great
I might invest in one of these when I have a bit more money
When running a 16ohm cab, what is the power wattage output?
Should have used your QC 😊
Anyone knows what happened to the irithyl burst signature model? I haven't seen Rabea using it on the videos.
I use the Powerstage 170 and the Orange Pedal Baby 100 with my Helix to power a 2x12 cab. I found that for high gain tones a pretty drastic high cut is needed in the Helix otherwise it's way too harsh. That didn't seem to come through in this vid though.
Which would you recommend for the helix, SD 170 or the orange?
@@markvandergiessen3158 I'd recommend the Seymour Duncan powerstage 200. You get 4 EQ knobs. The 4 being the presence knob plus all the other features seen here.
Hey guys. Probably a silly question BUT… do I need to use a proper speaker cable from the V4 into the power stage or just a “normal” cable? Thanks in advance…
Regular patch cable into the power amp and a speaker cable into the cab.
@@TheRealDavidFarmer Thank you very much man.
Could be the goal too for a bass player using hx stomp and 2x12" 4 Ohms darkglass cabinet?
I’d say that’s an ideal usage. Just make sure your cab can handle the full 200 watts as the powerstage will output the full 200 at 4 Ohms
6:50 Cam Sim ? )))
Can you sell/share your helix patch?? sounds amazing!
Need this patch
Every time you say "Kraken", my brain keeps hearing "crackin'". So I think "it's nice that he has a crackin' pre-amp, but what brand is it?" Then, veeery slowly, my brain catches up😂
It’s from Victory amps
Do I have to run this through an amp head or could I just use the SD 200, Dark Sun and the Kraken v4 by itself through a cab?
The sd200 IS an amp. You wouldn't run it into an amp head ever..
Any power amp sounds fine solo in the bedroom, does anyone actually play this thing live?
I've been using this for a while now. Played gigs with it from clubs to larger fest stages, etc., it's worked fine for me so far. Plenty loud enough, that's for sure.
Wondering whether the xlr line out can be used without loading a cab?
Same here. Because it would be really stupid not to work that way
How well would this pair with the Strymon Iridium?
Rabea, was this a paid spot by SD?
I wish he was more clear about sponsored videos.
I assume he is paid unless he says otherwise.
I’m assuming he’s getting paid for reviews as all utubers do. They don’t work for free.
I don't have Kraken but I have a Sheriff which is similar. I wouldn't say it takes dirt or boost pedals well.
Dan Lock thanks for replying. That’s disappointing to learn. I guess I’ll have to go with the Effectrode Blackbird.
I'm just asking because I'm stupid, but when I plug that Powerstage 200 straight into one or two cabinets, do they have to be 16 Ohm cabs, or could I use a 4 Ohm cab and an 8 Ohm cab for instance?
I neeeeed to know this too 😆 did you figure it out by chance??
Shelly Mota ; Sorry, I still don’t know. I just thought that someone should mention this, but nobody does. 🤷🏻♂️
Wow almost no difference between cab and line except for volume. Also to expand the direct tone looks like you could use two notes captor x
Yeah, until you play with distortion.
Just got the 170. Oh well
I can't be the only one thinking the cabsim sounds awful under gain. Really should enable loading a better IR.
How do these compare to a regular power amp iike a crown xls other than EQ?
I used to run the Palladium in to the 170. In to a 2x12 cab it got painfully loud at about 11 o'clock
It’s loud.
They are super loud. I've never had to have my 170 volume knob past 10 o'clock.
Had no idea that you skate so well...you like dark souls, you play guitar, shit I feel like we would be best friends in another life lol
i am curios about how the powerstage sounds with a neural plugin with the cab section off running into a real cab
Ola englund did that on the 170
@@philfort7886 can you give me a video link?
Cam sim
So, how much clean headroom does it have? What does it sound like plugged into a stack and cranked to 10?
Into a stack cranked to 10 will be too loud for pretty much all gigs as for clean head room it doesn’t break up it’s a power amp the Eq is just match the amp to a cab.
@@sid35gb
Your gigs perhaps.
LOL
@@ardiris2715 so which arena’s and stadium’s have you played in? You haven’t put up any videos of you playing in any.
@@sid35gb
All of them.
LOL
@@ardiris2715 Oh………..So in your dreams then.
Does that goes after the helix or before
after :)
Rabea, Where is your Tele ?! :o it's been a while :(
Indeed it has! Been loving the strat a lot recently with the new pickup changes. But yeah I’ll use it in some new videos
You need a mammoth cabinet for this though....LOL
