- Alfa Mist & Yussef Dayes are young ambassadors of London’s rebooted, revitalized Jazz Scene which is in the midst of a growth period, strongly influenced by music of the Caribbean islands and the London streets as much as by crossover developments in American jazz. This new sound often bears the markings of calypso, Afrobeat, drum ’n’ bass, plus the spiritual jazz of the 1960s and ’70s.
“It's not so much about complete arrangement, it's more about flow,” Dayes says about his debut album “Black Focis”, a mainly improvised album that shook up the music scene upon its 2016 release. With a hum of jungle, grime and broken beat - it has shaped a self-taught, UK-tipped approach to playing jazz. Taking inspiration from the anything-goes spirit of ‘70s jazz-funk, on albums by Herbie Hancock or the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it’s a loose template with plenty of room to experiment.
Best experienced live, Yussef Dayes and Alfa Mist bring unpredictable and at times fragmented intensity into their performances.

I’m so mad we never got a proper album out of these two. It seemed like the next logical thing after “Love Is The Message”, but both have moved on to put out fire projects since this tantalizing glimpse of what could be. Get back in the studio with Alfa, Yussef! You can’t leave us hanging after “Love Is The Message”!

That song is kind of an untouchable classic now amidst the ones fortunate enough to know about it. These two play their instruments almost like a water tag game. Intense, joyous, moments of foreboding and moments of high action.........everybody ends up wet and happy...scratch that last one. 😅

Yussef's sound has to be influenced by the breaks-chopping genres, particularly 90s Jungle and D&B. Absolutely love it.

'Black Lotus' doesn't exist to my knowledge.. 'Black Focus' by Yussef Kamaal is the album he released in 2016 with Kamaal Williams AKA Henry Wu
