Trucks is possibly the greatest slide guitar player on the planet. Susan is a powerful blues singer and guitar player. She is a treasure, but together they are just amazing.
@@petek7906 or Ry Cooder, Roy Rogers, and many others . I just think Trucks is on another level. I’ve seen many many. The thing hat sets Trucks apart is single note precision.
The way Derek riffs off Susan's voice just gives me chills every time I hear it and I've heard it hundreds of times. Never gets old. Absolute perfection.
Derek's solos are REAL soloing, not practiced routines. You could go see them a hundred times and never hear Derek play the same solo twice. He's just riffing through whatever mood happens to strike him at the time.
I have never had celebrity crushes. However I have totally fallen in love with Susan. As strange as it sounds. I am particularly in love with how she looks at Derek when he plays.
I'm 64 years old and a huge fan of them. I've seen them live a few times and what does my heart good is when you go to a TTB concert, you see fans from 18 years old to 80 years old.....
I am one lucky man. I live 7 miles south of Red Rocks and get to hear this great band every year on my birthday! The last weekend of July is when they come into RR every year. They are so big at RR that 5-6 years ago they expanded a single night gig to a two night date, and they sell out both in a couple hours. Not only are they both so unbelievably talented, they are truly very nice, kind people. When COVID hit, Derek and Susan kept the band's salaries at the same level as if they were touring. They took the financial hit, not their band. I once complemented Derek's playing on this very song on their band's website. The first time I heard it was at RR on a lovely Colorado night. It was simply magic. I said that it sounded like Ravi Shankar's sitar, a feat that I've never heard a slide player even attempt. A couple hours later, none other than Derek himself replied and thanked me for the complement. If you want to really understand how dynamic Susan's voice is, watch the YT video of her doing Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind," when President Obama had blues night at the White House. She does a duet on it with Warren Haynes, Derek's old buddy from TABB. She knocks it completely out of the park, and then down the street. They are simply fantastic.
I knew in 1999, I had found a treasure at a BB king blues festival. Susan, stepped up on that stage, and was very comfortable. I've seen her and Derek 5 times. Gets better and better every time. Live music is the best. Worth seeing, I could have a dose every day!
You know that as a parent you've done at least one thing right when for her birthday your daughter wanted to see the TTB. Expose your children to the best of what's available then enjoy the company and the show. Good choice Stephanie Jean.
One of my favorite songs. That guitar solo brings me to tears sometimes. The organ is smooth and nasty at the same time. The horns are subtle but add so much and her voice is so effortless. Love it.
So glad that you reviewed this absolutely amazing song!! This is one of greatest bands in the world!!! Please review more of their songs. You are amazing!! Derek is an absolute master.
I tend to be drawn to music, of any genre, that can move me emotionally. These artists on that stage are capable of almost bringing me to tears. When they are "on", it is a thing of beauty!
Travelled to Glasgow last November to see their first gig in Scotland, and my first time seeing them too. Absolutely spellbinding. Their pedigree is impeccable, their vibe is really great. 12 musicians on stage, all at their peak from years of touring extensively. In all probability one of the premier touring acts in the world. Trucks is absolutely one of the premier exponents of slide guitar ever. Stints with the Allman Brothers at a young age cemented his pedigree early on. Susan is and was a premier artist in her own right. The couple were married for 10 years before they decided to merge their separate touring acts into this ensemble. The band are like an extended family.
I don't cry about things...but these two, and the beauty of their phrasing gets me teary on occasion. This is one of those songs I'm a little afraid to listen to. God bless what music gives us and each other :)
Once you hear Susan's voice you are hooked, then you hear Derek's guitar work and the band itself, it just blows you away. Absolutely superb, one of the best songs/ music ever. Have been a follower for a number of years now and have never heard a bad performance. Effortless, just makes you drift away.
Hi Beth, I've seen the Tedeschi Trucks band a couple times in concert and they are definitely one of the best current live bands. Derek Trucks played with the Allman Brothers Band for many years (he is the nephew of their drummer Butch Trucks) and he is arguably the best living slide guitarist on the planet. Susan Tedeschi (who is from my home state of Massachusetts) is also one of the best female blues/soul/R&B vocalists I've heard (and a pretty good guitarist).
This was a very special iteration of their band. It should be pointed out that the bass player is Oteil Burbridge who played with the Allman Brothers Band alongside Derek and currently tours with Dead & Co. Definitely worth checking him out, an amazingly talented bassist as well as a beautiful singer who happens to have perfect pitch. The angel on the organ is Oteil's brother Kofi Burbridge who tragically passed in 2019 and was an amazing multi-instrumentalist. Derek's solo on this tune makes me tear up every time I hear it, it is quite literally perfect. I can also attest to Susan being a truly lovely human. I had the pleasure of seeing the Allman Brothers at the Beacon in NYC while sitting on the stage thanks to a good friend. Sitting directly in front of me was Susan and their then 2 year old kid who spent the whole show facing backwards dancing for us and giggling. Susan could not have been nicer that night. At the time I had not really listened to her music I only knew she was married to Derek. I am now a huge fan of them both.
Thank you for mentioning Kofi. Viewing this beautiful song combined with the fact that Kofi is no longer with us brings me to tears. A little sad that this person didn't comprehend his importance to the band and at least acknowledge him. Kofi has been with Derek for about 20 years when he passed. It almost ended this band, as described in a PBS video about them. Bless you, Kofi, for the goodness you brought us...
Kofi was the one with perfect pitch. They discovered it when he was 7 years old. Don’t get me wrong, Oteil is a great, world class bass player, but Kofi (RIP) was a virtuoso and one of the greatest musicians of all time. He was a genius, and deserves more recognition than he’s gotten.
Arguably the greatest live band on the planet. Derek is a god on guitar and Susan's voice (and her own guitar playing) are stellar. She is never, ever pitchy.
I just saw them in concert recently. It was truly a bucket list moment. They did play Midnight in Harlem which thrilled me to no end since the song is over 10 years old and they are promoting their new multiple album songs. This version of Midnight… is my absolute favorite. Derek plays his solo differently every time and I love the Indian influence that you can hear in this performance. They are my favorite band!!!!
One of the finest live bands today. It’s almost like a blues rock symphony. Watching Derek play is a spiritual experience. And Sue, aside from being one of the finest voices alive today can also light a guitar on fire. PS. If you want a song that highlights Susan’s voice in its full power, their cover of Bobby Bland’s “I pity the fool” is a must listen. TTB fans, Iykyk
I discovered them around 7 years ago and have seen them live 3 times. Gave up my ticket a few months ago so my daughter could go with my wife and she became a fan forever. They are amazing!
Beth, you have ARRIVED! The story of The Tedeschi Trucks Band could be a play itself. They are rare, genuine and humble. They always, always take time for their fans. This is my favorite song of theirs. Soulfully smooth and powerful. I suggested months ago that you check them up and I am so happy you did. Great review!
I love to watch them interact with each other. They seem in awe of each other’s talents even though they constantly play together. The rest of the band is awesome too !
Saw them live a few summers ago. Best active live touring band. Amazing on stage mix and production. Derek is a maestro in getting a big band to fit together with precision in a live setting.
An amazing duo, an amazing group. Derek is more than a great slide player, he is one of the world's best ever guitar players, full stop. And Susan is one of the world's most underrated singers and a damn good guitar player, herself. Incredible gift to the world.
The band is a must she live everyone in it is topnotch and the music comes first, they are one of the best live acts in the world. they will take you on a musical ride that goes many places.
You completely got it. It is amazing to hear someone verbalize what this band has been about from day one. When they combined musical forces, Derek wanted to create a space for Susan to sing, plain and simple. The entire band (they have had some personnel changes since this early performance.) is organized around Susan's voice. Your description of what you think their shows are like is spot on too. It is like being enveloped in waves of dynamic and harmonic vibrations. It is, for me, a very emotional experience, every time I see them.
The entire band is so good and they have a great ability to groove you in all sorts of ways. Amazing to see live cuz they bring you on a journey through decades of music.

@@travissmith9451 Right. I guess I screwed that one up. I knew better having seen them many times since the early 70s. Seen the Gregg’s son Devon live a couple of times, thanks for the correction.
@@travissmith9451 Yeah, I didn’t know that. I saw Gregg perform shortly before he died. I seem to have a long history of seeing many just weeks or months before they die. It started with Elvis a couple of months before he died and recently includes Dr. John and Johnny Winter. Time marches on, I guess.
Beth, I love your ability to explain. I have followed these guys for years and I think you have captured a lot of their strengths - dynamics, smoothness, quality, talent. They are brilliant.
First saw Derek sitting in the the Allman's when he was 12 or 13. First saw Susan playing Belle Cher festival in Asheville. Last saw them earlier this year.
I'm so glad to see you checking them out. Susan has been in my top 5 favorite vocalists nonstop since I first heard her in the '90s(?). Derek has had about the same place in my favorite guitarists. Their talents with such an awesome band has made some of my life's favorite music.
As I'm into a lot of Southern Rock (and this being one of many bands with roots in Jacksonville) they turned up on my radar and I'm happy they did, really great band that's carrying on the legacy in their own way. Thank you for the video! 🙂
Saw them late last year , gave me goosebumps all night and tears of joy in disbelief what I was listening to . And yep they done Midnight in Harlem .. Absolutely blown away watching them . ❤❤❤
I discovered them about 3 years ago being a big Allman Brothers fan. I'm finally seeing them in concert this summer and will probably be the best concert I will ever see other than another Tedeschi Trucks concert.
You totally nailed it. Their dynamics and ability to build up and break down so flawlessly gets me every time. They are both amazing with an amazing band. I’ve only seen them live twice and both times were awesome. He is one of my guitar heroes for sure! 🙌🙌🙌🙌
Hello i'm Duane Kenneth Williams, I was named after Duane Allman and I'm from New Orleans ....i was born to love this band,..... her voice is one of my favorites in any genre. Fond memories of catching them at NOLA Jazzfest. I pretty much watched Derek Trucks grow up from the first time he played on stage as a child with Allman Brothers...He is already a fortunate prodigy but really hit the musical jackpot when he met his wife. Glad you finally reviewed them
Hi Duane! I'm originally from Macon, Ga, so I'm a huge fan of the ABB too! As a matter of fact, my Grandmother died in August of 1971 and we had her funeral service in the same chapel that Duane would have his funeral service later that year. Have been a fan of Derek and Susan long before they formed the TTB. Love this band!
@@nashtndawg Nice one, thanks for your comment. Yeah it's too bad Duane was taken so early in life. My parents had a fit when i got my first motorcycle. They weren't being superstitious just knew how dangerous.....Love being from the South and all the musical flavors it has brought us, have a good one.
Derek played with the Allman Brothers for the first time when he was 14 years old. Years later, Susan was an opening act and that's where they met. They are so fabulous in person, and I just love that they have about 20 people in their band. I don't know how they make any money since they have to pay so many people, but the audience wins.
I love that Susan doesn't scream or growl, yet her singing is thoroughly bluesy. And she even hits the microtones (between the notes) accurately. Derek's guitar is the epitome of taste and perfection -- what IS it with this group? -- well, they've been at it for a long time. And where others got bored with the blues, TTB got better and better ...
I saw Susan Tedeschi live at small clubs and blues shows on the South Shore near Boston. Her family is from there. It was about 20 years ago she was just out of Berklee. She just keeps getting better every year.
I am going to see them tomorrow night, and I've seen them many times before. They are the most beautiful band I've ever seen. The love just pours out of them and washes out over the audience.
If you EVER get a chance to see TTB live, DO NOT HESITATE... I have seen them several times and I believe they are possibly the very best live band in the world. I have come to them organically because I am 65 years old and a passionate fan of the Allman Brothers from which Derek Trucks was born.... I think you should do an analysis of a live Allman Brothers tune from the Fillmore East album. That band was truly unique for their time in the late 60's and early 70's. They became a blues, jazz, gospel fusion band that to this day has been unprecedented. One of the most impressive things about them is that in 1971 when they recorded the live album the oldest band member was 24. Gregg Allman, the vocalist, was either 21 or 22 and he sounded like a wizened bluesman throughout. There is a reason that album is in the Library of Congress as an artistically significant recording. I believe it is the best live album of all time to this point and many, many others agree. I love your content Beth ! You are a true musician and believer in the power of music, as I am.... Thank you !
Glad to see you’ve joined the many of us who revere this band! Wait until you see them live! For me it’s always a deeply emotional and cathartic experience as their music helped me get through some tough times. I met Derek and Susan once after a show and can confirm they are some of the nicest, most humble artists the world could ask for.
They're coming here in October I believe. So is Warren Haynes. And so is Joe Bonamassa. This happened last time Kenny Wayne Shepherd came to town. We had Kenny, Buddy Guy, and another great blues band here all at the same time. Buddy Guy's show was the same night as one of them. I forget who. Not Kenny. I ended up choosing to see the hometown guitar hero, Kenny Wayne Shepherd. It was PHENOMENAL.
I met Susan Tedeschi back in 1987. We were both in a community theater production of Fame. They ended up creating a character for her because they had a wonderful dancer to play Coco... but she couldn't sing. Susan ended up singing Red Light, Hot Lunch, and Fame. I still remember hearing her sing Red Light for the first time. CHILLS. Her voice is amazing.
@amietedeschi3203 Very small! I was in the orchestra for Gloryland and Annie and a bunch of others. I started playing for them my junior year of high school.
I've been waiting for you to review TDB. Susan's voice is like an amazing, powerful instrument. And Derek, well, there are words to describe his skills. Love your channel.
I was chatting with a gentleman at the Tampa Bay Blues Festival who was retired like me. He had turned going to Tedeschi Trucks concerts as his quest. He said he'd seen them 88 times so far.
The relaxed feel comes from virtuoso performers being comfortable in what they do and just relaxing and doing what they are great at. I saw them live this past spring, it's an amazing show
What non musicians don’t realize about slide guitar is that it requires about 100x more precision than regular guitar. Derek’s style of playing is quite literally other-worldly
We saw these guys at Red Rocks. My wife - who isn’t the biggest fans of long guitar solos- leans over and said to me, “ it’s like God explaining the meaning of life”. We’re huge fans and have seen them many times now. #swampfamily
Great band! Derek Trucks is the nephew of Butch Trucks who was the drummer for the legendary Allman Brothers Band! Susan is simply amazing. Just an overall great band. Love this one especially
i have been watching/listening to Derek Trucks since he was a teenager, met him a few times. hes really cool. really humble and easy to chat with. Otiel and Kofi are amazing too such good guys
I discovered them on a dvd from Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival from maybe 2010 or 2013 where the covered “Anyday” by Derek and The Dominos, with Clapton watching from the wings. They absolutely killed it. And yes, Derek Trucks was named after Derek and the Dominos. He’s the nephew of the late Allman Brothers drummer Butch Trucks.
Same here - discovered them from one of the Crossroads Festival recordings - The one where they play with Warren Haynes on "Space Captain”. Since then, we've seen them live a number of times, and their live performances do really need to be experienced with incredible musicianship. They've really moved up in he world, we used to see them at a local college, then multiple Beacon Theater (NYC) dates and this year we're seeing them at Madison Square Garden - just a single date. They are just amazing live for sure.

Welcome to the world of Tedeschi, Trucks and their Allman Brothers heritage 1967-2014. Sublime joy
Greg Allman once said that Derek is the the guitar player that Duane would have become.
I have seen these guys a couple of times and will be seeing them again in July. IMO they are the best band touring today!!
As I'm into a lot of Southern Rock (and this being one of many bands with roots in Jacksonville) they turned up on my radar and I'm happy they did, really great band that's carrying on the legacy in their own way.
Thank you for the video! 🙂
Are you a mule head Too?
Saw them late last year , gave me goosebumps all night and tears of joy in disbelief what I was listening to . And yep they done Midnight in Harlem .. Absolutely blown away watching them . ❤❤❤
I discovered them about 3 years ago being a big Allman Brothers fan. I'm finally seeing them in concert this summer and will probably be the best concert I will ever see other than another Tedeschi Trucks concert.
The live from Atlanta is my favourite of this.
I finally get to see them live next month at the Fox. It's a true bucket list time.
Saw them in London last year, headphone quality sounds, one of the best touring bands in the world.
Such beauty and joy. Art. When it moves you to your core to listen you know it's special. Susan, Derek all of them amazing lovely souls.
You should listen to Berkeley School graduate Molly Tuttle by the way! Incredible voice and unbelievable guitar work.
Derek and Susan both had their own bands before they decided to join their efforts. Both of those bands are well worth a listen too.
Best live band out there right now in my humble opinion
At the end of the intro he plays the main lick from Duane Allman’s Little Martha. Sweet tip of the hat.
Big ABB fan. Saw Duane and band in 71. They loved playing at the Warehouse in NO.
@@tedschmidt3288 Oh wow so cool.
I’ve heard them live at home in Jacksonville. He’s a brilliant guitarist. She’s a combination of Joplin and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
She’s very influenced n sounds like Bonnie Raitt. Also I mean.
And they been at it long before TTB existed
Derek is singing as well. Just watch him. The man is singing that solo while he plays it. A key to instrumental soloing.
I saw Susan Tedeschi live at small clubs and blues shows on the South Shore near Boston. Her family is from there. It was about 20 years ago she was just out of Berklee. She just keeps getting better every year.
Hurt So Bad is my favorite song !
Thank you !
I got to see them live outdoors in early '82 in Gainesville at UF. The entire concert is on RUclips. It was mind blowing afternoon.
Best Working Band in the Business! That is my firm belief, and to attend a show is a bucket list item for me...👋😏👍
They're coming here in October I believe.
Beth, a nice TTB treat for your ears can be found in their NPR Tiny Desk Concert. It's really amazing.
They make me cry.
Spot On Beth. I fell in Love with this Band a few years ago, and had the privilege to see them in Chicago this past March.
Was that The Company Theater?
@@amietedeschi2037 It was indeed! I was in the chorus. I had a flute solo at the beginning during the audition sequence.
@@aimeeparrott9204 I did a few shows with them too - Annie, Anything Goes, Gloryland. I also worked a few years in their summer camp. Small world!
Her and the guitarist is a bit of an understatement. He is one of the best guitarists in the world at this time
Everything you said about Susan’s vocals is also true of Derek’s guitar playing!
I saw them live this past spring, it's an amazing show
Saw them live in Vancouver! They were absolutely fantastic!
I've met Derek many times. He is a great human!
Interesting aside, the acoustic guitar player seen about 9:11 is the one who wrote the song.
Best guitarist alive. One of the top 10 ever.
No question!
Derek Trucks is a virtuoso on slide guitar. Top of the rung. His pitch control is perfect. An amazing player since he was a kid.
This is a masterclass in how to play the Blues. Everything about it is perfect.
Great band! Derek Trucks is the nephew of Butch Trucks who was the drummer for the legendary Allman Brothers Band! Susan is simply amazing. Just an overall great band. Love this one especially
To me his playing seems to mimic her singing ..rising and falling at just the right moment to emphasis the softness or drama of her lyrics.
This is the best band on the planet. Nuff said
Facts
That Hammond B3 with the Leslie amp is THE sound of the 70's, it's incredible
This is the most polished group of professionals out there today
The two are simply beautiful performers
i have been watching/listening to Derek Trucks since he was a teenager, met him a few times. hes really cool. really humble and easy to chat with.
EC was impressed enough that he was in Clapton's touring band at that time.
One of the best bands out there. I love this song. Awesome and very talented musicians.
