  • To understand the story of Beck Weathers, you must go back to the fateful events of May 1996 during the ill-fated expedition on Mt Everest, forever etched in infamy. In the spring of 1996, Mt Everest braced itself for an influx of climbers from across the globe, each harboring a fervent desire to conquer its formidable peak. Beck Weathers was poised at the base of Mount Everest, unyielding in his readiness. Faced vision challenges at higher altitudes, his guide refused to permit him to summit, promising to accompany him on the descent. Unfortunately, the guide never returned and Weathers was stuck, blind on Mt Everest in mega storm on the highest peak on Earth.

Thank you all for your support! Wanted to try a new day this week. I hope you all don't mind the surprise upload. If you're new to the channel, welcome and remember to like and subscribe!
I have to admit. When I first started this channel, this particular story was among the first that crossed my mind. But I wasn't confident in my abilities as an editor or a storyteller to feel like I could tackle a story as epic as this one. Plus, I wanted to start with lesser-known stories that stand apart from other channels in this genre. A year later, I felt like it was time to tackle this story. It's as intense of an ordeal as any story told on this channel.

Kudos to Weathers' wife. Her wanting a divorce because she felt mountaineering seemed more important to him than his family was understandable. When she found out he was alive, she not only organized a historic rescue but stayed with him despite his major injuries, which, for some, would've been all the justification needed to continue with the divorce.

Your videos really leave my heart full. Hearing such intense stories of tragedy, survival, and renewal at the hands of the natural world is incredible, especially with the way you lay out the stories. My heart aches with sadness and hope for people I will never meet.
I don't engage in any extreme outdoor activities but the lure of the wilds sinks in easily even for a casual hiker. One of my best experiences was going off trail near the painted hills in the Oregon desert with an experienced guide (a geologist friend who had spent at least a month in the area during his studies) and it was incredible, but absolutely could have gone wrong if my friend got hurt and we couldn't rely on him for directions.
But at the same time I have no urge to summit a mountain, and will never place foot near Everest. Between my lack of required skill, perhaps a lack of ego, and an awareness of what is being done to that mountain in the current day all make that a clear decision. I'm also more than a little horrified that there was a company in '96 that took inexperienced climbers up that mountain. How times change, eh?

Beck Wethers was not a novice; he had already climbed many of the tallest mountains on earth.
I have found that strenuous outdoor physical exertion alleviates my depressive symptoms. But I have to keep it up. It doesn’t start relieving my symptoms until about 2-3 weeks into this regimen. And heat intolerance makes it hard to do in the summer, so it is my good fortune to live in a northern climate.
Unfortunately, injuries which prevent heavy exertion outdoors will set me back very seriously, and the resulting symptoms make it hard to get going again.

Wow. I don't even know what happened to the time. I was completely immersed in your story telling! This is an absolutely incredible story. I really don't think I could attempt to put into words what needs to be said in reply. Not yet. There's so much.
It's weird how his story stands looming in my mind almost like a mountain. A big, scary, cold, impending, inspiring, shockingly beautiful but loveless mountain that doesn't give it's gifts willingly or easily. Somehow Beck was gifted a double resurrection on that mountain. Once of his body, once of his soul. And I'm just feeling like me trying to understand that mountain through Beck feels impossible, even maybe irreverent. But then again, whatever we can gain, I'm sure he would want us to gain.
But I'm scared I'll twist his story the wrong way, take a wrong step in my mind as i try to understand it.
I'm not trying to be over dramatic. It's just... Part of me is angry he had to pay such a price to get a piece of peace in his soul. But then I'm happy too.
Maybe i recognize the tortured soul, and the mountain looming before those who struggle that way. It's so cold and scary and sad. But he wouldn't trade it. 🤔 I must think.
