  • In early February 2017, Rachel De Jong proposed a brief detour for a swim at a scenic river spot near the Aratiatia Dam, known for its natural rock pools and formations and the dam opening, during which water dramatically rushes into the river. As Rachel de Jong and her friends made their way down the trail, they heard the sirens around 11:40 a.m. but saw no signs warning them of the impending danger. The dam was scheduled to release water around noon. But within minutes, the situation would take a dramatic as the Aratiatia Damn upstream had started to open.

    RIP Rachel de Jong. Just so sad when someone dies when it was so avoidable. All she had to do was go home instead of swimming that day. My prayers go out to her family. Dams are no joke, and swimming near one or a resoviour, you gotta think twice about it.

    It has been said that on that day, all the hikers heard the 3 alarm sirens coming from the dam. Didn't they all have ears to hear? For me, it was a deliberate desire to ignore the danger. I live near a river with rapids, swimming and rafting activities. A few km upstream. There is a large dam, which long before releasing water, gives 3 very loud sound signals. In about 60 years of activity, there have been no deaths.

    It's quite sad that the dam operators were so complacent about their water releases knowing full well that this was a popular swimming area. One question I have is whether it was necessary to release the water in such an abrupt manner, or could it have been released somewhat more gradually in order to give swimmers an opportunity to understand that the water was rising before it became an inescapable spate.

    • @EXROBOWIDOW
      @EXROBOWIDOW Месяц назад +2

      Dam gates are designed so that the water can be released quickly, without damage to the gates, the dam, and properties downstream. Dam designs usually focus on the integrity of the dam structure, and the management of the impounded water, and on electric power generation and maintenance. The many other factors involved with building a dam, such as possible environmental, geologic, and social impacts, are often not considered at all, especially with older dams. Destruction of natural and human communities, fisheries, wetlands, etc. are sometimes considered in modern hydro projects, but not always. The idea of protecting youngsters who foolishly choose to swim downstream of a dam is not normally a consideration.
      On the other side of the situation, people who use unofficial paths to access areas that are not officially open to the public are not being safety conscious. With that kind of mindset, even if the dam operators could open the gates more slowly, the fun-focused people swimming below would be even less likely to realize that the water was rising. There would still be incidents, and tragedies.
      Also, whenever a safety feature is added, there are some people who think, "OK, now it's safe to do that dangerous thing I've been doing. So I don't have to worry at all now!" They proceed to exercise less caution, so they can do faster, more exciting, and stupider activities. And still get themselves killed.
      In this setting below the dam, the main thing that safety improvements provide is a shifting of liability from the operators to the reckless fun seekers. In the United States, such improvements might reduce the ability of surviving family members to win a wrongful death lawsuit against dam operators. I don't know the legal situation in New Zealand, so I can't comment on that.

      They were never complacent, hence why the warnings went off & the sign was up. But if they are not told the sign is stolen or are waiting on a new one then they can't police the entry all day or night. People need to learn to think about their actions & stealing a sign could have other ramifications, but they never do.

    • @AndrewJamesWilliams
      @AndrewJamesWilliams 21 день назад +1

      How were they complacent? The warning sirens went off as scheduled at the appropriate intervals. The warning sign being stolen - likely by metal thieves like the ones who stole a cast iron firepit from my garden last year - was not there fault. This whole tragedy is a classic case of what in UK law would be classified as misadventure. It is also a reminder of the power of water and why you must always treat it with respect.

    Dam of Death is right! That dam is a man-made disaster that is already gravely affecting the surrounding environment:
    "Fluctuating Waikato River levels south of Aratiatia Dam are being compared to a one in 200-hundred-year flood. Broadlands Forest resident Graham Sperry has lived near the edge of the Waikato River for 45 years. In the last 15 years the change, erosion and loss of the wetland by the river's edge, near his property has been "heart breaking."
    "What's happened is as the water level fluctuates up and down and the velocity of the water can come in, it erodes the bank, and undercuts the looser soil underneath. It's over half a metre undercut... and the weight of vegetation above that is enough to make it collapse." The artificial control of water flows is to blame for the four metre variance in water height, sometimes several times a day.
    "The ramping here is in the order of three to four metres, 14 feet and that has destroyed what used to be an extremely viable wetland habitat and that was assessed in 1996 as being a very healthy environment."
    Over time as the water levels change silt has been deposited over vegetation and trees - leaving a visible trace of how high the water gets. The silt is suffocating plant life and provides a breeding ground for noxious weeds.
    "The river is bringing in silt, a silt load every time it comes in here."
    Not only is the river killing vegetation it has also meant wildlife that used to call the wetland area home have left. There was a "community" of invertebrate and native wildlife species that used to live in the wetland alongside the river included ducks, fantails, fowls, marsh crake, banded rail and bittern, but today "most of those are gone".
    Mr Sperry and other community members want the Waikato Regional Council to review the consent for river flow levels and ensure that the environmental effects of "ramping the river" are being monitored more efficiently.
    Graham says he doesn't want to cut down power generation, all he wants is for the river to be managed with a view to protect the environment and maintaining the natural wildlife.
    He says Mercury should not be holding water back in Lake Taupo and "letting very high flows go during peak power period demands."
