  • Holly Courtier was traveling the country in a converted van and was visiting Zion National Park. She took a shuttle to the Grotto picnic area. Armed with a backpack filled with essentials, she ventured into the heart of Zion. Holly found a secluded spot, strung up her hammock between two sturdy trees in a vegetated area near the Virgin River, and affixed it. But as she went to sit on it, it swung back, causing her to hit her head on a tree. Her sense of direction failed her, and despite her best efforts, she found herself lost in Zion's clutches. As dehydration and exhaustion took their toll, Holly's situation grew dire. And as the days went on, this ordeal would become a compelling one as questions arose about her disappearance.

Appreciate all of you for your unwavering support! I hope to see you all at the live stream in a week. I'll provide more details later.
I was made aware of this story by another popular RUclipsr you all may know as well, and it piqued my interest. I wanted to approach the story with an open mind and give her the benefit of the doubt as that RUclipsr did. After delving into the details and scrutinizing various articles and the official NPS investigation report (the link in the description for those interested), finding her account hard to believe.
In creating content for this channel, desperation is a recurring theme in survival stories. Many involve injured or lost individuals, yet the common thread is the unwavering human will to survive. These stories often unfold in remote backcountry locations where encountering another person is a rarity. Even in those low-probability instances where someone else might be around, people typically shout, venture out, forage for sustenance, all in a desperate bid to stay alive. It's a common theme in tales of survival. The depths of human desperation to endure and survive.
What I find troubling with this story is the lack of desperation. For those familiar with Zion, the main Zion Canyon stands out as one of the most populated areas in the entire National Park System. The main cannon is really narrow as well. The scenic drive, where a shuttle passes by every five minutes, and the region near where Holly was supposedly found is close to a highly popular trail leading to the Emerald Pools. The Grotto shuttle stop is for the Angel's Landing hike, possibly the most popular hike in the entire NPS. Examining the search and rescue efforts, including the use of a drone with thermal and night vision, which operated during the night, adds further skepticism. Considering all these factors, getting lost in the Zion main canyon seems implausible unless one intentionally avoids being found.
Even someone with basic outdoor knowledge, perhaps even a city dweller, would understand that following a river often leads to civilization or help. In Zion, following the Virgin River downstream would inevitably lead to the Visitor Center and Springdale. If Holly had walked upstream, she would have encountered the Narrows, a popular destination. Taking all these elements into account, I share the questions raised by Sgt Cashin and Fitzgerald. Whether she intentionally avoided being found or sought sympathy through a potential hoax remains uncertain, but I cannot confidently believe that she was stranded in Zion for 12 days without food, water, and just yards away from safety.

I've been to Zion and the area Holly was found. At the time I could hear cars and traffic, not to metion hearing hellicopters miles away. The fact that Holly walked out and received minimal rescue aide is suspictious. There should be a deeper investigation for the parks sake, As for the Go Fund Me donors, do your research before blindly giving to every sob story; it's a perfect venue for scam artists! Thank you for another informative story.

The unfortunate reason scammers can get away with their schemes so easily. Folks don't research anything and playing on people's emotions + good will makes for easy victims tossing money at anything. I don't give anything to "GoFundMe" campaigns.
Had a former coworker who was RIGHTFULLY terminated. They turned around and attempted a massive "GoFundMe" campaign pretending to be a victim who was blindsided by their employer. Of course to play on people's emotions they made sure to have a picture of their family and mention how they're a big family that needs money! Thankfully they didn't get much of anything from the attempt.

Nothing about this lady's story makes any sense. We've visited Zion in October and the park is still very busy. There is no way anyone could spend days lost sandwiched in between the main road and the heavily used trail across the river. The area where she was found is less than 600ft from the main road (with constant traffic) and less than 500ft from the busy trail. She was coherent enough to remember that the Virgin river water is not safe to drink, but not coherent enough to remember that the river is 500ft from the main road? Zion's main canyon isn't some vast wilderness like Grand Canyon. It's an incredible place to visit, but the bottom of the canyon feels very narrow. It's about 1/4 mile wide, and most of that space is taken up by the road, the river and heavily used trails. If this had happened in the backcountry it would be believable, but getting lost in the main canyon is like getting lost in a city park.

    • @outdoordisasters

Completely agree. Been to Zion a couple times. What makes it so beautiful is how narrow the canyon with these giant cliff all around you. Much more narrow than Yosemite. I didn't mention it, but some of the SAR folks mentioned that with all the elements used to try to find her, it's hard to get lost, unless you don't want to.

Says someone who has seemingly never been off a trail. Because if you had, you'd know in wilderness or semi-deep woods it's fairly easy to get turned around and twisted up and lost. It's happened to me in 99 acres once. In woods I grew up in and had spent 100s if not 1,000s of hours exploring, romping, hunting, sleeping and playing in. With roads on 2 sides and the rest with a creek wrapping around. Without bumping my head. It took me probably close to an hour to escape from what was basically the backyard where my dad grew up. It was close to dark and I absolutely panicked for probably 15 minutes. And you believe this or not but I don't panic. Get off trail you might find out. I don't know or care about this lady and her story. But I do know when people talk about nonsense.

I've been to Zion dozens of times, both canyoneering and hiking. This story is sketchy at best. She could not have gotten lost anywhere in the narrow corridor along the Virgin River. It is the most traveled area of the park, with shuttles driving by every 15 minutes or so, and hikers climbing on trails near Emerald Pools and Angel's Landing. The hotel is nearby as well. The history of mental issues also raises questions in my mind.

    • @HellyeahRook

Most outdoor disaster stories are sketchy at best, do you think any person would risk their health? I think the proof is in her condition when found.

    • @beardofnursing8602

@@HellyeahRook While I get what you're saying, this story is just so hard to believe. I was actually in the park while SAR was looking for her, and the area where they found her would be nearly impossible to get lost in. You're inside a canyon that's maybe about a quarter of a mile wide, so you can usually easily see both "walls" of the canyon, and there's a road running down the middle. Plus, while it may not have been peak season, there were still large crowds of people. The Grotto area is a heavily-trafficked area. From what I can tell, it would actually take effort to avoid being found in the area.
And then there's the water ordeal. Let's forget about food because there are stories of people going for weeks -- sometimes months -- without food. However, humans generally cannot go for more than a few days without water. The family originally claimed that Holly was able to survive because she had the river right next to her. However, the story changed when they found out about the toxic red algae bloom that would've likely made Holly very sick, so they went with the idea that she only used the water to wet her mouth. The problem with this idea is that now we have to assume she went 12 days without any significant consumption of water. And though they did say she was in the early stages of kidney failure, most people would likely be dead within 5-6 days. So we would expect someone who has been outside in the elements for 12 days without water to be dead, and at the very least (and this is being generous) be in multi-system failure, close to death. And in the miracle situation that the person is still alive, you'd expect them to have such electrolyte imbalances that they would not be able to stand up, much less walk the distance Holly did with minimal assistance.
So she somehow overcame overwhelming odds and survived for 12 days without any water -- not to mention it did get hot during the days and cold at night, likely speeding up the process of dehydration. And on top of that, she was able to walk with minimal assistance. She got a concussion right away, impacting her judgement, and ability to call for help or draw any kind of attention to herself. Yet she had the cognitive ability to get herself to a water source and also remember not to actually drink the toxic water. And she was also able to keep track of the days by marking them down with a marker? It's just odd that her judgement was seemingly impacted severely in some ways but not others.
Let me point out that I don't think it was a scam. I think Holly just felt the urge to run away and get away from everything else, or maybe had some kind of mental health crisis. I don't think this was to make money. I think she was just running away and was trying to avoid being found. Maybe at night after the crowds had left, she was sneaking over to the water fountains that would've been close by. Maybe when she actually started to deteriorate, she had second thoughts and allowed herself to be found.

I always enjoy your content. I cannot imagine getting lost in Zion National Park. I got lost when I was little (around 7-years old), when I went into the woods behind our little farm. I kept going deeper in and then I got really disoriented. My Daddy was a policeman, so he was able to get the Sheriff's department to help search for me. It turned out that I had been walking in circles. Daddy found me, and I thought I was going to get a spanking, but he just grabbed me up and started crying. When Momma saw me in Daddy's arms, she just started crying. With that said, I cannot imagine making myself look lost and doing it for money. Why would someone want to cause that kind of heartache to others? It's really quite crazy!

actually people lost in the wilderness ( or anywhere else ) tend to walk in circles....Not only children, but also adults... It happened to me few years ago: I decided to walk from my new place (which I didn't know well that time). My plan was to walk more or less in straight line on various footpaths and anywhere I would have end up that evening I would take a taxi ride to home.... There was no wilderness, only a rural countryside, with some villages and small forests and fields.... Hours later to my surprise I ended up in the starting point of my walk!!! So much for walking in a straight line 😅😃.. Needless to say, I haven't had a map prior to that walk.

I've been interested in this story from the beginning. I was actually in the park while SAR was looking for her. My wife and I saw flyers pinned on signs in the park to be on the lookout for Holly Courtier and the equipment and attire she had with her. The area where they found her would be nearly impossible to get lost in. As others have noted, you're inside a canyon that's maybe about a quarter of a mile wide, so you can usually easily see both "walls" of the canyon, and there's a road running down the middle. Well said. I couldn't had said it better.
When I went into this story, I came in with an open mind, more leaning towards this being a true survival story. But then as I researched the story more and read of the official NPS report that wasn't redacted, and the areas SAR searched, which they marked on a map along with the flight direction of the drone that used thermal and night vision tech at night to search the canyon, the searchers and the drone were very close to where they found her. So I came away with the only possibility was that she was never there and ended up at the spot later on, or she hid in some cavern or something at night. Where she was found, for sure she would've heard voices from people since the spot is right below the trail to Emerald Pools. And she was probably a 100-200 yards away from Zion Canyon rd which shuttles are passing by probably every few minutes. Being in that exact area a few months ago, I have a recent visual of that area and how narrow the canyon gets and how much traffic is in that area.
What gives me some pause about it not being a scam is how deliberate she had to be to avoid not being found. If she really wanted to get lost, Zion Canyon is probably the "worst" place to get lost since it's such a popular location in the one of the most visited parks in America. There are much more remote places in the park. I believe she probably was in a more remote area, and then when she wanted to be found, she moved to a populated area. I know it's hearsay, but that text from the person close to the family sent to the news station seems plausible. Plus, SAR officials, including Fitzgerald and Cashin had serious doubts about her case.
Thanks for your comment! That was some great observations!

@@outdoordisasters : Holly may not have been at Zion, except for the first and final day. She could have slept in the Grotto parking lot, where an accomplice had parked a car, full of provisions. She could have been "off campus" starving herself in the safety of her own home, and going without water the final two days. Being 4/10 of a mile away from the Grotto parking lot, she would have been able to hear cars coming and going. The only reason she wasn't found is because she didn't want to be. Choosing a location so close to the Grotto parking lot, an accomplice could have brought water to her and then carried away the empty bottles. No one would be the wiser.

Wow this was fantastic!! This has become my favorite channel!
IOW, when you're having mental health issues, or have wanderlust, that is NOT a time to go try to get a hug from Mother Nature all by yourself, skipping safety protocols.
I remember a commercial they used to have about margarine, A woman tasted margarine and she was fooled into thinking it was real butter. When she found out she had been fooled...Suddenly lightning struck and she became kinda terrifying and she said 'It's not nice to fool Mother Nature!'
It's even worse to fool rescuers because you're having mental health issues or need attention. It might not end well either. I share your skepticism.
This video is a great reminder to not romanticize nature to the point of being complacent or foolish. Mother Nature doesn't give hugs. It's survival of the fittest. And sometimes there's no survival no matter how fit you are. Most pilot error airline crashes are due to a little bit of complacency creeping in. One rule not followed, one skipped step, one bit of overconfidence.
I live in Utah, and these rescuers know what they're doing. I can't believe her story either.
This isn't the way to get mental help.

I tend to lean towards the scamming side. If she was actually suffered the head bonk one the day she was lost,no way it would still present as a lump twelve days later. Also, as others have mentioned, it was in a small area, near many pathways. There is no way she wouldn't have been found if she had actually stayed in the hammock. Seems like she had lost her job and was looking for an easy payday. If she did scam people, she will have to give an account of this when she stands before the Lord.

Holly was so close to the Grotto parking lot (4/10 of a mile) that she could have heard cars coming and going. I think she didn't want to be found, until the time was right. I also suspect she had an accomplice who would bring her water, and then pack out the used containers. Her accomplice may have spent the night with her and left early in the morning. It's also possible there was a vehicle in the Grotto parking lot that Holly slept in at night and was used to store water and other necessities.

Half the “fun” of being in the wilderness is “getting lost”! The people that don’t find a way back aren’t prepared to survive in the wilderness. It takes a special mindset and years of experience to “safely” venture off into the wilderness alone. I’ve been hiking, biking, XC skiing alone, in the wilderness for over forty years. Going it alone is risky but when in doubt I like to refer back to my scuba diving experience, dive with a buddy.

I'm not saying she committed fraud but if that is the case then it's a damn shame that someone would plan this. So many people in S&R put their lives on the line to search for lost hikers. Many of those people are volunteers and do it out of the goodness in their hearts. I can't imagine someone being so self involved and wanting nothing more than to profit it makes me a little sick to think that is the case. I really hope that was not their plan.

My idle speculation is that she had some sort of mental breakdown. After months of Covid restrictions and losing a job, it wouldn't surprise me if she basically just lost her sanity for awhile. It was a stressful time. Seems more likely to me than a deliberate attempt at fraud. Either way, a pretty strange situation.

What’s weird is they started a go fund me to help search for her yet tax’s payer were already paying for the search, they hadn’t called it off or dropped down on searching, they never said that, we only have the daughter saying they would, but not that they had. Yeah it sounds like a money making scheme to me. No way falling backwards on a hammock would mess your brain up or even give you a goose egg. I’ve went sled riding backwards down a hill above a junk yard, I hit my head so hard and had a huge limp but I was coherent and told my cousin to go get help bc I was bent over under a car, they had to lift the car up to get me out. I was also smashed over the head with a glass beer bottle that broke, again I had a small lump but was coherent, you would need great force to your head to give you a lump, knock you out and make you forgetful. She’s lying no way that happened.

I think the wilderness is beautiful. But don’t be careless with your life. Especially places like Zion Utah. In the Grand Canyon and Arizona. And also Yosemite national park. I also think that half dome is very dangerous. I wouldn’t climb it if you paid me too. That’s a way to in your life. I think they should close it down and don’t let anybody up there. It’s far too dangerous. The saying is I’d rather be safe than sorry. Or I’d rather be a live chicken, then a dead duck ha ha. Thanks for the video I subscribed to your channel and I love your video.
