  • New DeWALT TOUGHSYSTEM 2.0 Storage Boxes ARE NOT WHAT I EXPECTED (is this serious?) In this video we go over some brand new storage and organizer boxes from DeWALT's new line of toughsystem 2.0 organization platform. This is a brand new 3 piece stack with a new and improved rolling base box with bigger wheels and a removable handle, a medium sized storage box that features an IP65 rated gasket and patented side latches, a small organizer top box with removable organizer trays. We have had the toughsystem 2.0 radio/charger since it was released on last years black Friday holiday season, we want to test if it is compatible with all the new boxes and if the new 2.0 tough system boxes are compatible with the original tough system. These new storage options from DeWALT are not what I expected and I seriously can't believe the quality and customizability with toughsystem 2.0! Let us know your thoughts and experiences with new DeWALT toughsystem 2.0 storage boxes in the comments section below.

What we really need is a system for storing power tools in a repeatable way. The problem with these bins is that they are just hyped up stackable Tupperware. It keeps the tools 'safe' from just sliding around the back of your pickup truck but a regular Tupperware bin could do that. If I have a Dewalt drill, impact driver, hammer drill, circular saw, jig saw, sawsall, narrow crown stapler, framing nailer, I still have to simply lay them in a HEAP at the bottom of these bins. This doesn't keep them neat, orderly and safe. If they truly want to be at the TOP of the game. They need to have inserts for these bins or some sort of internal racking system. So I can put all of these tools in the same spot EVERY time. This means a spot for the drill, driver, hammer drill, a spot for the circular saw, etc. You want to be able to get to a jobsite and within minutes of getting to the right spot being able to start a job? Right now with these bins, sure i can get to the location but I still have to sift through the mess I made at the bottom to get what I need. Sure, for those of us that are highly organized you can create your own system but then lets not even talk about sharing this system on the jobsite, then you are talking a real soup of cords, batteries, bits, tools, etc. Long story short, this system doesn't begin to start solving the main problem tool owners have and that is storing these in a way that is more efficient.

God yes! The problem is that it would still only work if you stick to a single brand. I have DeWalt, Makita and Festool tools, so I ended up making an insert out of plywood myself. Managed to fit 6 power tools of various brands + batteries into a single systainer that way, and everything is organized nicely. (No space for the chargers though, but I rarely do big jobs, mostly it's landlordy stuff).
In the end I stuck with the Systainers. I like the easy stacking and one-handed operation, but it's mostly because I already had a couple of them plus the trolley. And I rather like their cantilever toolbox. They don't feel nearly as tough as the DeWalt containers but for me that's not much of an issue. Still, if I was building a new "EDC" tool setup, I might go for the new DeWalt boxes.

I totally agree. I have to literally pull out all my tools to get to a tool that is at the bottom of the box and then put everything back and then get to work a lot of waisted time .

Foam inserts. Kaizen foam, ShadowFoam. Starting from purchased blanks pre-shaped at the manufacturer to drop into the drawers or toolbox, you can self-customize inserts for any combination of any model of any type of any brand of tool there is, providing they aphysically fit in the insert (also available for other storage systems). holds them securely with a distinctive cutout for each tool. Addresses every concern expressed above.

@VCG Construction. Thanks Vince for the thorough review. What makes your review video different is that other people don't have a 2.0 radio or a DS Carrier for testing. It's too bad Dewalt didn't make the 2.0 boxes totally compatible with the DS carrier with that rear bracket. Even if we don't padlock the central locking mechanism, using that mechanism is added security in keeping the boxes secured to the carrier when moving.
Hope you and your family stay safe and well.

One huge mistake Milwaukee made with their boxes is there’s a ton of wasted space. The clear lid screw bins are bigger on the outside will having less space on the inside. They’re way tougher but that’s a big deal breaker for me. Something Dewalt needs to fix with the dolly box is the wheels aren’t bolted on, they just have a press fit cap that falls off.

I found another thing out about the 2.0 boxes I do like though is that clear plastic piece on the front can come off and you can make a label for that box. And the 1.0 radio won’t work on the 2.0 boxes either. Just waiting to see what other options they come out with for the 2.0

@@o04n7h0n90o The packout has to be 'disassembled' to get at something that's not on top. The tough system is independent when on those brackets.
Saw a video of a guy that welded up a frame in his van for those brackets.
As far as I could see, it was the ultimate in clean, orderly, quick access.
One drawback that deWalt may or may not have addressed is the shitty, overpriced radio. Between to "auto-break" antenna, the shitty reception and the radio interference when charging batteries made me swore to never buy another one.

I have dozens of the tough system 1.0 boxes and 2 of the DS carts which is how I mainly move them boxes around. For Dewalt to leave off the metal tabs for the cart to lock onto was a big mistake IMO. Especially if you can't lock the 1.0 radio onto a 2.0 box. I wonder, can the metal tabs be added to the 2.0?

But hopefully tough system continues to ad more features to bump it up to the pack out level. A tough system vacuum would be good as well and some soft bags. This seems like a viable option for the added mobile versatility tool storage for my tools that are always "on the go" and never stationary long enough to make it back into the toolbox. $500 gets spendy for a mobile tool station and practicality but I can tell just by the video.. milwaukee still seems superior as far as ruggedness and robust modular set-up.. might get a dewalt for the hell of it still. I just checked-out the Dewalt ToughSystem 2.0 in a store, and the button mechanism for the handle was a bit dodgy on one of the units - it sometimes wouldn't pop back up or lock in place. The Milwaukee PackOut system's handle lock-spring was a lot more reliable, but there was also a heap of slop in the handle in the Milwaukee, and it feels like it could break at the junction between the top & bottom part of the handle. It felt like it needs another centimetre of overlap between the top & bottom part of the handle to give it more strength & rigidity. Also, it's a pity the bottom box is so big - it could get very very heavy if filled with the wrong tools - I'd want to pick some very bulky but light-weight gear to put in there, like a hard-hat & face-mask. I'm still very much leaning toward the Dewalt though, despite the dodgy handle button mechanism, because it's only about 60% of the cost of the Milwaukee in Australia. But at AU$349, I am very reluctant after seeing a unit with a faulty handle button.

Once the trolley only is available, large/medium/small boxes can be arranged in any order, for ex: medium/large/small, small/large/medium, etc. I could not so far find this kind of combination with any other manufacturer. Hope they incorporate this suggestion.

The best unit for organizing and carrying tools is the two drawer units. Tool in the bottom drawer, and the accessories in the top drawer. That lets you get things out, without unstacking, three or four components to get the tool you need. Which will always be at least three down the stack.

Hi, I bought these boxes because in my work I needed a storage that could protect my tools from water, everything is very good, I love how these boxes look and their internal space, along with the dimension of the wheels that makes it easy to transportation, but, I think it's wrong, that when it rains and your box gets wet, the water accumulated on the lid when you open your box all the water falls into the box. Which seems like a shortcoming to me, because the time they spent designing the 2.0 and making it waterproof has a flaw. so that this does not happen you have to drain or dry the lid before opening it. other than that when removing the handle there is a protruding area left, and yesterday the base of the handle broke. I am a little disappointed, because the boxes are visually very robust and resistant, and the use that I give them is in a service and maintenance company.

Can the side clips from the 2.0 attach onto the 1.0?
I'm asking because the 1.0 seems like a stronger box (in the long run of things).
    Great video by the way!

I have 3 of the small boxes and one of the large boxes, I just got the garage wall storage system today the carrier is next, I need all the space I can get in the garage so im glad dewalt made a garage wall storage system for the tough system. PS tough system 1.0 radio does not fit with the 2.0 boxes unless you wiggle it into place and latch it manually by pushing down kind of hard

I'll stick with my 1st gen. I think I like the box latches better and the locking carry handle on the bottom box better. I also don't wanna give up the locking system for the DS carrier, wall and van mounting system.

With the 1.0 roller big box if u have the handle up the tstack standing up fts and is held by the handle. Best way is to have the big roller and medium box on then with the handle up ur tstacks fit perfectly

There is one issue i found with the 2.0. When using any of the storage racks if your within a certain distance to the crossmember the piano hinge makes contact not allowing it to lock in where as the 1.0 doesnt have any issue. (Found that out by accident on the workshop storage rack DWST08260)

It’s good to see Dewalt step up to the competition in this 2.0! As good as? Good enough for a different price point I think.
Is this much cheaper than Milwaukee....My Red looks Great with my ‘Yellow’.

Adapter plate needed to mount Tstak to ToughSystem.
Also, sandwich 2.0 between two 1.0 and lock it on the hand truck.

As soon as the plastic side latches (without metal pin inserts) started snapping off when the units tipped over, I abandoned the Tough System in favor of Packout. Had 2.0 been available sooner, I may have stuck with it. No regrets!
