- Wound infection is back for the 3rd time in DayZ Standalone and this time it kills you unless you have tetracycline medicine to cure it or use rubbing alcohol, disinfectant or the newly added iodine tincture. In this video I go over the causes, symptoms and cures for wound infection in DayZ, along with busting some myths about wound infection.

Bandages have been said to spawn with the "Disinfected" status as standard, even if they spawn as badly damaged. I didn't include this in the video as I wasn't sure if they spawn in 'naturally' as disinfected. This makes bandages much more useful in this patch.

also dayz: bandaging yourself with a purpose build anti bacterial piece of cloth that comes in air tight and sterile packaging? certain death within 40min. or your money back
Dayz: The bandage is not in a package and found on zombie's corpse.
Bullets themselves don’t give infections often because they are essentially sterilized when they are shot. Because of the heat. What causes infections from bullets are usually the clothes or random junk that gets pushed into the wound.

Getting it from letting small cuts heal by themselves is overdoing it. Before, you could trade the inconveniene of patching it up against the little blood you lose, which was nice.
It definitely is a challenging addition. Before realising how it works I always died within few couple of hours from spawning. At its current state, maybe adding more frequent spawns for tetracycline pills would balance it a little. Or adding a possibility to desinfect these items with fire or something.

@@MediaevalJames That is nonesense. In order for medic al equipment to be sterilizable it could not have any cloth material on it. That was a requirement for designing anti covid masks I did at work. you don't sterilize by boiling.

90% of the time I heal with bandages that aren’t disinfected I don’t get wound infection. Don’t waste your disinfectant on the bandage. Just use it when you get infected

Disinfecting a pre-packed, pristine bandage makes little sense. Those are usually sterile (or close to that - you won't get a 100% sterile bandaging material by sprinkling some alcohol on it).
It could be a cool mini-feature to have pristine bandages be good to use without disinfecting them, while still needing to disinfect damaged ones (thus conveying the idea of damaged and no longer sealed and sterile package).
Unless it changed on experimental since I tried it, all bandages were disinfected. Even badly damaged ones I picked up.

I think there should be a chance of getting an infection from non - sterile items rather then getting it every single time. Or, at the very least having minor cuts, to say your hands after cutting down a tree, not give you an infection if you use a non sterile item to heal it. Seems a bit excessive to have every type of cut and every non-sterile item give you an infection.

Unless it's changed recently, but all bandages are already disinfected. And on vanilla settings I don't think there's much chance of survival with a bleed for 5 mins.

They just made it hard for the sake of being hard. Wound infection is often defeated by your immune system. And you don't get it as often.
The ideas sound neat but it is already hard to survive as a freshie and they keep making it harder l. Not to mention the spawns for disinfectant will probably be bad.

When I tried this on Experimental my character mades a 'pain noise' every 15 seconds after getting infected wounds. It was giving me a massive headache. Do you know if they changed that frequency?

I got the infection because i forgot about it and had to bandage at the airfield, but no worries because hey i have 6 tetracycline tabs... ate then one at a time and i think its been 30 mins and i'm still sick with no more meds. brilliant.

Played last night for the first time since 1.07. Didnt get wound infection but i did find disinfectant spray & iodine. Thanks for the tips.
Before i knew about this, i got wound infection stage 1 and was really confused, but after googling it i got the cure and luckily cured it. I was about 30 seconds away from getting into stage 2 which would've killed me
Great. More things to make the game really hard. This is true survival. Hopefully DeadMatter and The Day Before come to console. Dayz is pretty much the only game I play atm. (On ps4)

@@zacharygreene1979 When i first tried that I ate all four at once, which didn't work, but what worked for me was to take one, wait for the pill symbol to appear and then finally disappear, and then repeat that 3 more times.

So hears my issue , during combat items in your inventory get damaged so unless you have all your healing kit in a protective case .you will have all your disinfected ready to go but the moment you get shot and need to stop a bleed your bandages get damaged thus not disinfected any more then you have to disinfect AND bandage in the heat of combat ........ this will be frustrating
That's a good point. Although it would be nice for protective cases and medical bags to have some value!!

@@townieoutdoors8121 with you there. Same for all items actually - I'm convinced that magazines being returned to random slots may be why I often have issues reloading by holding R
so just carry around tetracycline pills and bandage with whatever you have, you have plenty time to get to safety and cure infection before it starts doing damage to you.

Now we need an amputation mechanic to cut off the affected limb
There's actually a hidden mechanic of catherization, you know, heating up a knife and burning your wound shut, someone found some of the related signs months ago and were trying to get it working and release it as a mod, don't know if they ever did or not and who it was sadly.
It takes a few seconds for blood (3-4 mph)to flow it’d literally reach your brain so fast their would be no point unless you got supersonic movements going on
@@anotme9961 well when you get a cut your veins near the open would immediatly dialate to stop any infectious materials from spreading into your blood stream, and to let white blood cells into the site to begin fighting off infection. This basically halts blood flow to allow for clotting and vessel repair. Proper wound infection should really only be an issue if you either get a deep wound like a gunshot, or heal a shallow wound with very dirty bandages. If Bohemia wanted to implement a proper version of this system, shallow cuts like scratches should be way less likely to cause wound infection while deeper cuts like stabs and bullet wounds should be very likely to cause wound infection.
It's getting to the point that there is little or no time for PVP anymore.
I get that DayZ was always a fight against the environment, but it seems like death before you get to play is more likely than ever now.
It's not meant for pvp it's what you make of the game you know so play different servers and get different outcomes but yeah pvp is fun

You already lose 90% stamina space carrying food bc you starve 5 minutes after a meal, as well as ammo bc zombies activate from 40m away, but now we gotta carry a bunch of disinfectant lmao. I played this game when it first came out in beta and it seems they improved in game quality but mechanics has gone down a shit ton

I really don’t like that is is a 100% chance to get an infection, maybe 50% at the most with the worst immune system.
It's not 100% chance to get it, it's 100% chance to die if you do nothing about it. The chance to catch it is roughly 30% based on my tests. So do you risk this 30% chance and die to stop a bleed that can kill you too? Not to mention... if you take damage and bandage yourself, you need to check that the bandage wasn't damaged. This patch is going to be rough lol

The fact that I’ve only ever had a couple wounds get infected in my whole life is either a testament to my immune system or proof that DayZ needs to fix the mechanism for infection
That and you can go far longer without food than you can water. Mahatma Gandhi went 21 days without food, some science says you could even go 2 months, so long as you have water.

I could only assume that any dayz survivor that was living a normal life with a 9-5 probably wouldn't get wounds all that often, let alone get an infected wound. Don't compare your IRL life to dayz. It isn't like you dont have means to put a plaster on your scratched knee from washing the car.
Also, a small cut may bleed a drop, cut your artery and paint the town. What is your point? You think you want more realism. Accept that games are an escape from reality, not trying to mimic real life in the slightest.

To people wondering why bandages are not sterile...
Bandage
A roll of NON-STERILE gauze bandage. Can be used to directly stop bleeding, but can also be used other ways.
The item model is also an open topped paper wrapped bandage. Having worked in surgery, I can assure you that is in no way shape or form even remotely sterile.
You would think the infected would cause infection not to mention the items carried by infected might need disinfected but who knows.

I mean since you can cure stage 1 wound infection with alcohol on your wound within the first 20 minits, this doesn't seem too tedious.
Unless you don't find any any, I'm about a 5th of the way in the map, and haven't found any yet (on this life).

@@hartianx1698 Yeah the best way to approach it seems to make sure that you have rags, because I don't think every zombie cut will result in an infection, and then head to a hospital to try to find some tetra.
Along the way you might get lucky and find some disinfectant. But I got lucky finding tetra just outside the hospital in the ticket stands next to the hospital.
But really once I started to make getting to a hospital a priority and doing stealth kills with zombies, I started having better luck. Good luck!
Problem for me is I've gone to 2 clinics and 2 hospitals and only found 3 tetras between them all, not enough to cure it. And I haven't seen disinfectant the entire time I've been on this characters life

It sounds like a terribly bad thing to implement. It's just gonna lead to players commiting suicide if they get cut multiple times in the early game.

I managed to get rid of the wound infection, I was at the worst stage and had seriously low red health but all my other stats were good so I just eat loads (over 15-20) tetra pills one at a time over probs about 2 hours real time. It can be beaten keep going find the hospitals and get medicated and always disinfect from the get go

I know it's the lore that you're a survivor immune to the infection but how damn cool would it be if you had an infected status that got to a point where the "infected" weren't aggro'd by you and you have sweet immunity.

"Brutal". My thought exactly. I like any change that encourages smart survival over reckless pvp. Untreated wounds in a wasteland of infection and death should be lethal. A natural treatment would be cool. Love the outro.
It will slow down the pace of all PVP. As another commenter noted though this could lead to mass suicides as fresh spawns if one were to receive multiple cuts. However on the bright side pvp encounter definitely need to more thought out now. No matter how geared someone is all it takes is one shot in the right spot to even the playing field. This looks interesting but should be tweaked more because it seems it could be quite annoying as well. I sense a future re-balancing firmware update.
the problem is the spawning of tetra and whether immunity still applies. with duping still working and such you may end up travelling for hours looking for a single med item

It's pretty awful trying to survive Livonia since this update. There are some diseases that do not cure with anything. I spent an hour popping tatra and nursing food/water. Even tried vitamins. Eventually just killed myself because I went through all my meds and couldn't survive long treks with my water consumption.

@@tj4y48 no, I actually spent abobut 10k hours providing servers to dayz mod (believe me or not) and about 1,5k hours playing DayZ standalone on public servers fpp, no crosshair, long nights. I find your comment being pretty offensive.
@@illidur what they should do instead of stupid things they make is to provide some really hardcore servers, made mostly for survival not shooting call of duty style like it is atm. I was hosting a server myself but couldn't handle the cheaters so i quit.

This is definitely in the “less fun” category, and should not be added. Games are played for fun, not disappointment.
Disagree. This game is mainly played for the “survival” aspect of the game. I for one love this change. It might not be “fun” but holy hell it makes it feel more realistic and exciting saying that the only thing to really worry about in this game is other people and zombies.

Not sure If I got this right but is the chance of getting an infection from an non-disinfected Rag/Bandage 100%? If so that needs to be changed should be a chance not a 100% guarantee.....
No not 100% ive been playing almost constantly since the upgrade and have bandaged multiple times and never have i disinfected a bandage yet,i just make sure to cut up only pristine clothes for rags.
Only had the infection once too and that was from having ruined shoes in the middle if the bush and not patching myself for a few minutes, its not as bad as everyone is making out maybe im just lucky

Got wound infection, took tetracycline (5 pills), died from it. Damage did not stop when under the effect of tetracycline. As you say, codeine, morphine, or any other medicine had no effect.
IMPORTANT: Don't take another tetracycline until the previous one has been used up, you just waste a pill. Also, from my experience, if you are over halfway through stage 2, you're just dead.
IMO there should be some way to halt the health loss from the infection (but not the other effects) and allow you to recover, like when you have a broken leg, you can splint which partially removes some of the worst effects, but then you still have to wait to heal before you are fully fit. At the moment, unless you have one of two items (some kind of disinfectant or tetracycline) in your possession, it is a death sentence.
Instead of a zombie survival game, Dayz is now a wound infection survival game.
You say that but the last few weeks i got wound infection once, its not as bad as people make out. I just disinfect all that needs it and make sure bandages dont get damaged. Prevention over cure. I used to make sure my gear to fix wounds was clean before the update anyway. Stick your dirty rags.
I didn't know I had wound infection (never knew it existed) and thought it was the common cold so I waited it out and am now red health just after getting all the loot for base building

I was having a lovely DayZ until this happened to me a few days ago. I am new to the game so I let it persist since all my stats were up. I found a rooster and noticed that aiming was quite the task. Dying from wound infections is totally lame.

I think it would be cooler to have the chance of infection be higher or lower depending on the type of wound it is your treating not guaranteed if you don’t disinfect all cuts. But we’ll see how it goes for the time being, thanks for the update!
I accidently got the sickness from bandaging myself with non-disinfected rags. What i did to remove the sickness was get attacked and cut again and "this time" using disinfected rags to stop the bleeding.. the sickness icon went away.

I like it, because it gives players a reason to pick up disinfectant spray and alcoholic tincture. These items were (almost) useless before
