Great summary of a bunch of bikes that are bordering on being irrelevant for road use. I do love sports bikes. Had several including zx7r, '04 Fireblade and a '15 S1000RR. Whilst the 7R wasn't setting the world alight with power, it was a great road bike. Satisfying to ride on road and track. The Fireblade felt on the limit of what power was remotely possible to use on the road. The RR tipped the balance and got rid within 6 months. Ironically, superb electronics and insane power, combine to make a bike that is video-game easy to just pin the throttle. Whilst this does allow the rider to focus on everything else, it doesn't stop the fact that you find yourself in two polar opposite ends of road riding: left feeling that you're pootling about using half revs and quarter throttle, or, you begin to feel that you're stretching it's legs, arriving home thinking - how am I (or others) still in one piece and will I be getting a brown envelope in the post in next two weeks ...worse, a knock on the door. let's have some great handling, usable sports bikes for the road that we can use and can afford.
I've been saying this for years. I'd take 130-150hp and a nice, usable torque curve over a 200hp revbox any time I'm not at a track. The Triumph looks about as close as you can get at the moment but I haven't tried one so can't say for sure. All this £25k for something that can't pull your gran under 10,000rpm is just daft.
Actually nicely said. I used to race (so I think I’m a reasonably decent rider) and I wouldn’t buy a 1000 for the road. Exactly what you said - just never feel like you’ve “ridden” the bike without getting into ultra-dangerous arrest-me-or-die speeds.
Yeah when he said it was near the bottom kind of made me laugh. It’s literally right at the top with couple others , although it is an overall value video I guess? So price would be high compared to some competitors anyways. But H2’s and RSV4 factory isn’t gonna a whole lot of difference lol. As a non fireblade for 20k think the value is actually not bad at all
Very informative. I also had a difficult time to choose in between BMW S1000RR Sport and Suzuki GSX-R1000R but ended up with S1000RR for having little more tech eg semi active suspension, TFT dash and active breaks etc. But no doubt that Suzuki is an excellent all rounder as well. And in Korea, GSX R1000R is 10-15% cheaper than BMW. So great value for money too. Cheers
as someone that owned a few bikes a gsxr 600 and a yamaha r1 and rode heaps more the gsxr 600 just worked, was solid. No thrills or creature comforts but did the job as well as you would want it to. The yamaha's were a bit iffy sometimes and i had problems with my clutch on my r1
I agree, I had a Normal Gsxr 2017 model. Absolutely stunning road bike, utterly fantastic. Fueling, comfort and looks. Loved it so much. Brakes were a bit soft though
I have owned most of these bikes. Only one I still have is my heavily modified h2. It’s just such a work of art and you never see one on the streets so most blokes are always interested to have a chat about it. Great video Michael. 👍🏻
I miss when bikes were simpler in the 2000-2010 era where it almost felt like it was literally just an engine, two wheels and yourself. Now with all the electronics it feels like a computer. I think the last of that golden era is the current gixxer. Just put gas and ride it. Not a fan of Suzuki but their bike is the only that feels like those golden days
Well, some allow you to zero out almost all the electronics - not TC, WC, Acrive/semi active shocks, etc. etc... At 158-168 hp, you can still get sideways, but at 200 hp, it just happens that much quicker...
I miss the days of late 90's Japanese 600s... :D An awesome bikes to ride around with your friends after watching Akira. Infinitely easy to ride, mod, and own, and have fun with.
absolutely man, had a 91 honda f2 and a 99 yammy r6 and a 2002 cbr 600rr coulda got a 1000 but the sixes are where its at, i miss the shootouts just the Japanese 4 and triumph came along there at the end. Got a 2018 zx6r kawi now but all are excellent rides. Stay safe.
I’ve been riding a GSXR 600 for the past 5 years since I got my license. I feel like I need to own a litre bike before they are killed off forever. I want that experience. My money would be on an S1000RR or R1. But I’m short so probably the S1000RR
I second this. If you even want a slight taste of that 200hp, you'll be higher in the rev range going absolutely stupid speeds on the road. You could argue a supernaked would be more practical on the road, but I tried a Superduke and the torque on that thing was also far too much for the road in my opinion. I currently own a Duke 890 R, which is considered to be the goldilocks street bike, but I even think that bike is too fast for the street. As soon as you start having some fun, you're going over twice the speed limit already. Bonkers.
I would try and borrow or hire a 1000 for a week or just a weekend. The constant fueling and the prices ('bigger tanks') will disappoint you very quickly. The bloody thing was constantly pawing the sky and didn't really need 6 gears.. 3 gears was enough. Don't get me wrong it was laugh inducing but.. The running costs and higher insurance broke the deal for me. If budget is not an issue for you then buy one but i, myself can live without one happily. And besides wheres the challenge in just pulling away from everyone on the straight bits if you can't go round corners faster too. Nah I'll stick with my 6 and keep my licence longer too. Don't forget that for the Roadside Assistance, BMW does NOT charge any deductibles unlike all other roadside assistance programs from all other motorcycle brands; such as Ducati, which ONLY gives you "up to" $200 to have a tow truck pick you up as part of the roadside assistance. You have to pay everything else after that. So, if you get stuck on a tour and the nearest Ducati or other exotic dealership is 150(or more) miles away you are screwed. But, there is NO limit distance for BMW. They pay for ALL of the towing no matter the distance ! That is considered a true 5 Star Service to the 'conscious intelligent man'...

Here is something interesting to look at. Here in China the motorcycle prices are through the roof. Just to list a few: BMW S1000rr base model = 297,900RMB - 44363.72USD Ducati Panigale v2 = 222, 000RMB - 33049.48USD Ducati Panigale v4 (base model no 's') = 248,000RMB - 36920.14USD Kawasaki Ninja ZX10r = 360, 000RMB - 53593.76USD Yamaha YZF-R1 = 229,000 RMB - 34091.58USD Suzuki GSX-R1000 = 339,800RMB - 50586.55USD Honda CBR1000rr-r = 428,000RMB - 63717.02USD These are a few of the liter bikes, however to be honest the 600 CC's are also all from 260k to 400k RMB (CNY). And all the motorcycles have a 13 year scrap period before you can't ride your motorcycle anymore. (Sad but true, I own a Ducati here and plan to ship it to a foreign country once it reach that period or 120 000km).
I’m old school and the only bike with any electronics I owned (briefly) was the 2014 ninja 1000 w abs and traction. Hated it! I miss my 2004-2015 bikes with some only having a slipper clutch. Those were cbr 1000rrs Gsxr 750 cbr 600rr, zx10r and my lovely tractor of a beast rc8r. These newer bikes are too cluttered and busy with bs I don’t need. They should make them in base models too no tc no abs nothing! My wrist takes care of all the controls instead of crappy electronics
My 1199 is still lighter than these and with an Akrapovic runs over 200 hp, crazy bike and always a day out, and Im never going to good enough to ride it!
I’d like to see MCN do some more second hand bike stuff. Bikes normal people can afford lol. You could do everything from 5 year old sports bikes and Adventure bikes or even up to 10 years old . Thanks Neevsey
As these bikes approach prices of cars, maintenance costs really go up. Warranties are great but high performance means higher wear and tear on parts. Off warranty repair especially on high performance engines means a thick wallet needed. European bikes are made in the thousands vs Japanese bikes made in the millions. More aftermarket parts vs oem parts for Japanese bikes above should be considered if money is an issue.
I really doesn't matter! They're all way more bike than 95% of the people can use. Still, they all have great engineering and are very capable ridden by a very experienced rider.
This is a great review by a more competent rider than myself. I will say that probably most riders are in the sub 20K category. The rest depends on your riding habits, capabilities and mechanical ability. Being a mechanic I like the low price of Kawasaki and the fun in fixin' it up (2014 N1K, 2019 ZX_10R). BMW, Aprilla, Ducati all have high cost of ownership. Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki are more user friendly and fun/cheaper to mod.
Bought a 22 S1K RR; sold it in less than 6 months. Rides well; EASY to ride but gave me issues from the start. Engine died twice on me while i was at an intersection and turning. This could have been deadly. Handle bar vibrates like crazy, unstable at high speeds; and plastics feel extremely cheap. Suspension is smooth and its a fast bike, but its very unreliable. My water pump failed not even 2 weeks of ownership and the bike was in the shop for over a month. Recommend Japanese bike or if you can afford it; the Panigale V4s. 18,500 miles on my Ducati and not a single issue. 2021 Panigale V4s.
I used to race (so I think I’m a reasonably decent rider) and I wouldn’t buy a 1000 for the road. Too expensive for something I’d never be able to really ride and enjoy without going to a track. On a track day - different story - but on the road you can have more fun on a naked or middleweight bike (if you’re still going sports bike & not tourer).
Love these vids, but +£20k for a modern superbike is just ridiculous, and you say the RSV-4 at £16,900 is cracking value, well maybe on PCP, but seriously,... I remember buying a new CBR1000RR in 2004 at £9,500 and I thought Fk/me thats the most I've ever spent on a bike, and looking back it will ever tbh... older bikes set up correctly and still just as capable in good hands and less than £10k, unless ones only goal is bullshiting at the local bike meet, then I'll stick with those thank you..
I think it would b really good if u were to do another review on the same superbikes but judge them on reliability and cost of service , u can have the best superbikes for the track but r they really that good if ur having big end failures or cam shaft problems at 10,000 km's
The CBR RR-R in the US is $29k. Can’t even find pricing on an SP. It’s crazy money. I’d take the Ducati V4S all day every day over that. Honda are insane.
I would rate the ZX10R above both the R1 and GSXR. From riding them all, and seeing countless other "professional" reviewers on youtube, it's quite clear why.
Technology we don't need is driving the prices way too high. Motorcycles being fun and affordable is quickly becoming a thing of the past. In 2016 I bought a FZ09 for $8000 new. Today they're double that.
If you want some real performers the Brembo Stylema monobloc calipers are a good choice, but you'll drop some serious coin on them($900-$1000 US). This doesn't include steel braided lines, pads and master cylinder for the fronts only.
The new blade is so heavy. 30 years ago 185kg was the main selling point of the game changer. I did like your commentary on the Fireblade line up I put together at Donington though Michael
Its funny how they say for 2021 superbike, terrible brakes :D and Im here on the 1990. VFR750F... how these would be compared to the ZX10R bad brakes lol :D
100% correct. I think calling the zx10 brakes terrible is just lazy reviewing. They could be a touch and I mean touch sharper which a better set of pads does, but calling them terrible ? Nope.
Now the multi-million pound question, what bike (if any) have you Michael Neeves, spent your own money on? I'm sure being a bike journalist doesn't offer an unlimited budget so I'd be interested to know after all these years what bikes you have put your own cash into?

Those were cbr 1000rrs Gsxr 750 cbr 600rr, zx10r and my lovely tractor of a beast rc8r. These newer bikes are too cluttered and busy with bs I don’t need. They should make them in base models too no tc no abs nothing! My wrist takes care of all the controls instead of crappy electronics
My 1199 is still lighter than these and with an Akrapovic runs over 200 hp, crazy bike and always a day out, and Im never going to good enough to ride it!
Excellent as always mate but I’m keep my h2 💪
I'd still get a R1. So much capability and they sound the best in my opinion
Just seen a 2018 Gsxr 1000 with low miles for a really really good price lol, I think ima have to try that bike out
I love mine, pipe, filter tune, q/s, bleed brakes, then off with you now!
thank you, do it for street fighter, or just street, naked bikes
Thank you.
CBR 1000RR-R all day every day twice on sunday.
I suggest using tierlist for categorization fir these bikes, great visual aid and way to order items
I’m happy with my 21 RSV4
Harley riders are use to paying through the nose on just air/oil cooled motors.
Harly riders are dense. Everybody and their mum has one broken down in the garage, but they all think it's appreciating 😂
Aside from the H2, I love them all.
Are you sure that’s your favorite subject Michael?
Gsxr for the reliability, these bikes are pretty much indestructible and they are cheap to fix and maintain.
2021 Panigale V4s.
awesome review
really happy with my 2022 s1000rr :D
Where would i acquire a non sp cbr1000rr-r?
I used to race (so I think I’m a reasonably decent rider) and I wouldn’t buy a 1000 for the road. Too expensive for something I’d never be able to really ride and enjoy without going to a track.
On a track day - different story - but on the road you can have more fun on a naked or middleweight bike (if you’re still going sports bike & not tourer).
Rsv4 factory is everywhere when it comes to comparison
Many of my countries man, Cambodia 🇰🇭 love two of those Yamaha R1M and the BMW S1000RR/M1000RR and the Panigale V4s or V2
Couldn't have said it better.
H2 without a doubt
ZX10R
Love these vids, but +£20k for a modern superbike is just ridiculous, and you say the RSV-4 at £16,900 is cracking value, well maybe on PCP, but seriously,... I remember buying a new CBR1000RR in 2004 at £9,500 and I thought Fk/me thats the most I've ever spent on a bike, and looking back it will ever tbh... older bikes set up correctly and still just as capable in good hands and less than £10k, unless ones only goal is bullshiting at the local bike meet, then I'll stick with those thank you..
Everybody loves a black bike with gold wheels
do this for naked bikes
I think it would b really good if u were to do another review on the same superbikes but judge them on reliability and cost of service , u can have the best superbikes for the track but r they really that good if ur having big end failures or cam shaft problems at 10,000 km's
Have you made a similar video recently for supersports or middleweights?
Deff looking at the s1krr as NY next Nike to rip around but the ninja s1k is nice. Currently rolling on a 21 R-3
what about panigale 1299s in this rank?
Gixxer is king 🔥👑
Ninja H2, put a full system on it, lose the restrictions and you have 250 HP
270bhp=250whp
Why the S1000RR and Gixxser only if you’re NOT going to do many track days???
The CBR RR-R in the US is $29k. Can’t even find pricing on an SP. It’s crazy money. I’d take the Ducati V4S all day every day over that. Honda are insane.
I would rate the ZX10R above both the R1 and GSXR. From riding them all, and seeing countless other "professional" reviewers on youtube, it's quite clear why.
Technology we don't need is driving the prices way too high. Motorcycles being fun and affordable is quickly becoming a thing of the past. In 2016 I bought a FZ09 for $8000 new. Today they're double that.
R1 vs gsxr?
What brake mods would you recommend for the r1
Nope.
Why Suzuki wouldn’t list the base model GSX-R is beyond me 🤷♂️
I think it's has something to do with the emmisions of the base model.
Honda is number one ❤
Now the multi-million pound question, what bike (if any) have you Michael Neeves, spent your own money on? I'm sure being a bike journalist doesn't offer an unlimited budget so I'd be interested to know after all these years what bikes you have put your own cash into?
maybe have a look at the Buell 1190 Hammerhead. Or ?
