    As far as my reading of history goes the flag of Ireland "the Irish tricolor" was given to one of the leading members of the young Irelanders (Thomas Francis Meagher) by the women of the 2nd French Republic who were sympathetic to their cause. The green represents the Irish Gaelic traditions, the orange representing the British settlers and supporters of William of Orange and the white representing the peace between the two groups.

    British government records are usually released after 100 years, ie next year. An exception are the records for the Irish War of Independence which are sealed for 135 years. It is claimed to protect the family of Irish people who cooperated with the British authorities. The release will probably add a lot of information for historians to study and maybe change our knowledge of what happened.

    Minor mistake, the Irish Citizen Army was formed in 1913 to protect the workers on strike during the 1913 Lockout. It was not created as a reaction to the Ulster Volunteers.

    • @thepumking365
      @thepumking365 4 года назад

      @Rowan O'Mullane I'm not calling them veterans to evoke some kind of sympathetic response for the shell-shocked, it's just what they were. The black and tans and auxies were both formed on the suggestion of Winston Churchill to clear up the streets of out of work veterans and handle the internal unrest in Ireland, it was really a shrewd way of killing two birds with one stone. A lot of the violence that the black and tans showed the Irish people came from the fact they were hardened by the war and used to these barbaric actions. It also had a large part to do with the fact that there was a view that Irish republicans were ungrateful of their part in the UK and had not played their due part in the war effort by protesting conscription. To the black and tans the republicans were draft dodgers who were trying to break up a kingdom that they had spent four years fighting for. Every reprisal they made was barbaric and the lowest form of despicable, but none the less that was their background.

      They exploited Ireland’s food produce in the 1840s and caused a “famine”. It was closer to genocide with thousands of British troop guarding the ports where an abundance of meat, vegetables, dairy produce etc was exported to Britain while the Irish were left to starve.

    The British rule over Ireland dates back all the way into the second half of the 12th century when King Henry II of England claimed the island of Ireland as its lordship. The Kings of England continued to rule Ireland as the Lord of Ireland until in the 16th century when King Henry VIII Tudor changed his title from the Lord of Ireland to the King of Ireland in order to assume better control over his ever Catholic Irish subjects.

    I don't understand why people are so crazy about Irish reunification these days. There's free trade, travel and relations are good. We have a common culture with the republic and those who want to be independent are, and these who don't are not. Can't we all just get along in this new peaceful isle?

    • @ImSorryFive
      @ImSorryFive 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah we can get along, and we can peacefully unify the Island but that's what Irish people want, our whole Island again. And I think it will happen, I hope in my lifetime but that remains to be seen.
      "those who want to be independent are, and these who don't are not" You're not from NI are you? I think you'll fine there's many people up North who aren't happy to be under British rule, a majority do want to be ruled by Britain for sure but let's not pretend everyone in the North is a British Unionist and it's only the evil South that wants them to be part of Ireland.

    • @thomasalvarez6456
      @thomasalvarez6456 6 лет назад +1

      ImSorryFive But not everyone wants that. That’s why we have unionists. The majority of people in the U.K. don’t care about Northern Ireland anymore, like all of Ireland it was more trouble than it was worth. It costs more than to keep, after all what government first bailed out the Irish economy in 2007?

    The North itself remains divided on weather to be loyal to the UK or the republic. The people of the UK and Ireland both share a responsibility to grow up and engage honestly with the nuances of the issues.

    you forgot the Irish republican brotherhood, there remains founded the IRA, the old one. and the black and tans where in Ireland during the Easter rising, don't believe Wikipedia, the IRA broke up after the troubles becoming many splinter groups, the Provisional IRA, the Real IRA, the IRA, ultimately the Provos (that is what we call the provisional in Ireland) got the most troops, and they let anyone who wanted in, in, this lead to the end of the IRA war on drugs, where if they caught a dealer, they would 'cap' him by placing a pistol or revolver behind his knee, and pulling the trigger, permanently crippling them so everyone would know that he was a dealer, and causing a life of pain, the Provisional started getting cocaine from the USSR to sell on the streets, during the cold war, the USSR, who backed any group, not just communists who wanted to undermine a capitalist government, had supplied the IRA with weapons, some of which are still being found e.g. two years ago a box of Russian made grenade launchers where dug up, they had obviously been forgotten about, as they where extremely old and rusted, now days they are a minor disturbance in the north as they are losing more members (because they retire from the IRA) than they are gaining

      And it is south of Great Britain (being that Northern Ireland is part of Great Britain). I do suggest that you keep in mind also that he was trying to keep the explanation down to 3 minutes and it was easier to just say 'south' than 'The Republic of Ireland'.

      I apologise. Some people do find it offensive to call it the south rather than the Republic

    The funny thing about this channel is that it's never 3 minutes. I've seen a bunch of videos and it's never 3 minutes. Ever.
    Really good video tho.

      ***** are you stupid? Ireland's flag is green, white, and orange. Ivory Coast is orange, white and green which is what this video had.

    • @LeGrimReaper

      flip inheck I'm confused, I thought you meant the flag in the video was reversed making it look like ivory coast flag when it's actually Ireland's.

    • @ImSorryFive
      @ImSorryFive 6 лет назад

      I know this is old but it annoyed me, the flag in the video was the Irish flag, you clearly have very poor spacial relations if you can't figure out why it's left to right Orange, White, Green yet still the Irish flag...
