      I can attest to that! I had a Chrysler Sebring coupe that was built by Mitsubishi on the same platform and assembly line as the Galant and Eclipse. It was an awesome car and handled like it was on rails. Even though the 3.0 v6 was “only” rated at 200HP it still kicked ass, the only let down was the odd gearing in the auto trans (Mitsu automatics are just, weird). It was my first car, bought it with super low miles and about 7 years old. Had some concerning underbody rust, but I totaled it a couple years later after I put 45k enjoyable miles on it. I’d still love to have another Mitsubishi car on that same platform with the v6 and 5 speed someday, but decent Galant/Eclipse/Stratus/Sebrings are hard to come by these days in the US.

    Westminster Bridge. This was long before walking across this bridge would be considered a target for terrorists with extremist views...in fact, this was summer 2001 so it was before 9/11 too.
    I hired a canal boat that summer, it was wonderful (except for the foot and mouth closures affecting some areas) and Britain basked in glorious weather when I was there. My hired car was a Focus estate - not bad, really. At home on the motorway or the bendy roads of Wales. The last summer where there were no worries about terrorism or global pandemics.

    I've always had an appreciation for these 'underdog' type cars. I currently own a 2003 Almera 2.2 diesel. The one that is currently my avatar. It's OK but has been an absolute money pit. It's had a tough early life once I bought it at 6 years old and 66,000 miles and it now has 97,000 miles. I prefer the colour of the one Jason driven (drove?) in the video.
    Instead of the Almera I would have been tempted by a Galant like the one in the video.
    My sister had a SEAT Toledo V5 identical to that one, albeit with the 150 bhp engine. Unfortunately she crashed it into some innocent motorist and wrote it off.

      The Clarkson-era TG was great for a laugh - stupid adventures and ridiculous challenges - but let’s be honest it wasn’t a good car show. The older version was better in a way because they actually told you informative facts and figures about cars that most people would actually be buying or at least could consider. Yeah, the McLaren F1 might be an absurdly fast car but can you afford one? How many people can? Unloved Almeras? There is some good advice.

    Interestingly, in neighbouring Ireland, which is of course culturally quite similar to the UK, these three cars all sold rather well. Irish people have a thing for Japanese reliability, so despite the Almera's dullness, it was actually a big selller. They also like the saloon versions of cars much more than the British, so the Toledo sold well (if not as well as the Leon) and cars like the Megane saloon never fared too badly in terms of sales either.

    • @jimtaylor294
      @jimtaylor294 2 года назад

      Availability, pricing and market saturation were likely factors in that contrast. Here in the UK there was endless choice in the 1st & 2nd hand markets, so if a car didn't grab the customer with a standput feature, price or endearing aspect of character... the competition would.

    The Almera is one of those Lib' Dem' cars, that because they repeatedly came in 3rd or 4th on everything, stayed there.
    After all when you're less well known and selling less than Ford's Focus, Rover's 25 or Vauxhall's Astra... there's got to be something wrong somewhere.
    The Almera's issue was that its styling was boring and undistinctive (even for the early 00's), and didn't have any features that stood out from the competition.
