hello friend, I am very impressed with the way you are cultivating bees. I am also a beekeeper, but a traditional breeder. I am very inspired by your video and very happy with your video, greetings from my traditional beekeeper from the province of Bengkulu, Indonesia🇮🇩🇮🇩🙏
I live up in Fermanagh. Been wanting to start a couple of hives around the farm. Thought i may as well go the full way and make the boxes myself. Great guide
This is just superb, been searching for "beehive decoration ideas" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Tiyia Beehive Basophilic - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my m8 got great success with it.
I love the ingenious little jigs you use. That vertical panel saw is very clever. I have a huge Altendorf. It needs a space approximately 6.4 metres x 4.2 metres. I put thicker end boards on than you do. I get a lot of inspiration from you and your delightful partner. Thank you from Roy in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney Australia
but I have to say those hives look very very nice. I like the tint they got when you applied the sealant. And the gap in between each super so that the bees don't get squashed was a brilliant idea
Hey Tim and Sandra, just wanted to say thank you for all of your amazing videos on bees and keeping them. I agree with your style 100% I like it a lot, I was thinking of doing something similar with a 10 frame langstroth, I did some math and the weight should be similar, about 5% heavier with a 10 frame 231mm langstroth full of honey vs the 12 frame 183mm deep frame on the rose hive. I have your book, and I was going to make a 10 frame styled after your rose. I am still thinking about it, not committing yet. But I like the idea of OSB.
If you have medium Langs, then use them. Apparently they work fine (I haven't tried). I only made this design because we didn't have anything else suitable. Good luck!
What a brilliant video, thank you so much for sharing the details. Love the car jack for fine adjustment prior to cutting with the radial saw. Also liked the method you have made for vertical cutting of the large sheets. Looks like a circular saw running on two mild steel round bars guiding the saw. Really great stuff. The Bees look really happy. Keep up the fantastic work, and these videos.
Very nice video. I am not sure that all the cool wood joinery techniques would have been invented if people invented modern wood glue first. As Mr. Kalashnikov said, "Perfection is the enemy of good enough". I just made some drawers with basically this technique. but I think if I was going to make a lot at once like you do I might consider a jig to hold it square and then screw it together. ETA; Cool stop block.
As a fellow wood worker, i gotta highly recommend that you get a dust collector. Or at least wear a mask. Saw dust will cause loads of respiratory illnesses. Dust collectors also keep the place much cleaner.
Thank You! I was wondering if plywood was ok, well made video/box Your jigs are brilliant, your carts are smart, and thank god my grandparents are Irish!
Great video! You have inspired me to become a better bee keeper. I only wish I could get at least half as good as you. Greetings from Barbados. May u and ur family bee Safe during these trying times! live long and prosper.
TIM I very much like all your videos as lots of other folks. I hope no one will mind me saying but I got a top popular USA brand router on Amazon and paid the duty to UK customs and it still was half the price of a similar quality brand here in the UK........ there's a program on telly called rip off Britain ! I got the kit to turn it into a bench model but will fabricate the table when I get round to it so as to make it similar to Tim's 'moulder'. So long as the fabricator is ultra careful with those fingers & ends up with the amount they started with after a few DIY beehives ---- I shudder to think ---ouch. How much I ask is a finger worth? I'm confident Tim makes his own bee hives as well as saving a lot there is that sense of satisfaction when you put to use things of your own making. Sometimes the feeling is intense------ My first bit of Biodiesel I made for a few pence per litre = brilliant...... I was grateful and still am from the very great help I got from the USA biodiesel makers.
Great video, Becoming a keeper very soon and I appreciate the help. You have another subscriber here. Going to see if I can locate that book here in the states. Greetings from Michigan, USA
Dr Fursov I am reading about Layens Hives for the colder climate of the US. Would you recommend them? I am building them per the plans from Dr Sharashkin. Would be interested in your thoughts on them.
I think you are absolutely right. The four pieces compare very favourably with the eight accurately machines pieces for a National hive which is also made worse by the difference between brood boxes and supers. So, well done and thanks for sharing. On question I do have is that I always find ply, (even external), de-laminates when edges are left exposed. Is this a problem you experience?
Wonderful video thanks so much for taking the time to make it and share it. I was wondering though if you make your own frames and if so do you have a video explaining how to make them for the rose box in this video? And if not if you could provide a link (if you purchase them online) and information as to which frames fit into this Rose Box? Thanks again it is a huge help for me as well as for many others I'm sure!
Oh now that was great. I shared it on my facebook too. Really enjoyed watching the wood work. Reminds me of my dad and my grandpa. Thank you. Love bees! I am excited to hopefully have my own sometime. Yay cool stuff! :)
Wow Tim, Nice to see how you build the Rose hives and with tools that are very nifty. Will try and share your video on the Rose hive videos we did together, see if you can get some more traffic. Excellent job. David.
I know Im randomly asking but does someone know a tool to get back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost the password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me.
Fascinating! Would you have knowledge of using thymol oil and cinnamon powder to ward off black hive beetles. An old German gentleman told me he uses them but don't have mixture recipe.
This is amazing and I understand many years after your video; but I was wondering if you could make a video of how to make these with much less gear(like just a saw or something)??? I have very little woodworking gear and would like to build myself instead of paying $200 USD for a pre-made(unassembled) box.
Awesome. Job!!! Wish I had 3. Where I reside you need to get a permit to have a beehive. I wish I could. It makes me happy to see your videos they are Tops... Thanks, Blessings Laura M
Hi Tim, thanks for the rose give method! I'm going to purchase one next month and i've already read the book, I love it! I already have a national . I was wondering to convert from national to rose, is it possible to place the rose box UNDER the current single national brood box and just wait for the bees to move in ? With the thought perhaps at the end of the season. I could remove the national brood that was on top , accounting for enough stores etc ? Thanks again, Dominic
Yes, you can do it that way too, but don't be surprised if they haven't moved all their brood nest by the autumn - you might have to overwinter both boxes - but that's ok too. Good luck!
Can you make a video showing how you make the frames please? My Irish Mum and I are very curious about that. I am saving for my Rose Method book. I love your other videos and subscribed :) I just may make a cart for the Horses too!
+AtomiKat Light Industries Yes - I will make a video of that, AtomiKat. Thanks for asking! You don't have to save up for the book - I'll send you a free one if you send me your address. (Privately might be best) Glad you like our videos, Tim
I am running this business from last 4 years and so far doing great. I am selling honey to the market, but the most important thing is to understand the different types of bee hives, as you always need the right beehive plans for your successful business. There are a lot of companies that you consider to start your business, but I am doing with buildabeehive.com/Beekeeping-Starter-Kits-c1.htm and found them trustworthy and legitimate. Thanks
Tim, i realize that the frames in the rose hive are a bit different from the langstroth frames. I would be immensely grateful if you make a video making and showing the differences between the two. Greetings from Brazil.
What's the difference and advantage of using a Rose hive over Langstroth and Top bar hives? I'm thinking about building a hive since a relative of mine is a beekeper, but I'm not sure what kind of beehive I should make.
+The FicSkull TBH are tricky to use because the combs are not supported and can break easily. The others are both frame hives - it's just that Rose frames (and boxes) are all the same size and you don't use an excluder. The bees can cope with any of them so choose the one you like most and they'll be fine (probably!)
You've got hobby mans dream of a workshop all the kit cost you thousands of dollars to set up so you must of been a cabinet maker . The Rose hive has no queen excluder screen strange so the queen will lay eggs all over the hive nice video.
Thanks for the info. I have purchased two of the Rose Hive Method books and have passed them on to other previously-kept-bees-but-got-frustrated beekeepers to share the knowledge, and the books encouraged them both to start beekeeping again! I'm using medium supers for my new hive (5 frame nuc arrives in May) and I think I made a fatal error- I bought an 8 frame hive. Given that this is 4 frames smaller than the rose hive OSBs, how much of a problem will this be? Should I switch my equipment to 10 frame before I get stuck with 8 frame equipment?
+wishingbee No, 8 frames is fine. I just developed mine to fit the local standard parts - you could just use medium 8 frame boxes and achieve the same thing, couldn't you? Or would it be too unstable if it gets tall?
Excellent, thanks for the response! I've been worried about the width of the brood nest with the 8 frames. I don't think it'll get too wobbly, it looks like it should be stable at least to 6 or more boxes, easily, although now I'm off to google that scenario. I'd love it if my first hive in ages would be vigorous enough to test the height boundaries of an 8 frame system. :D
Great video............But why can't I just screw a 1 X on the side for the handles. Wouldn't this do a better, quicker job? So I would have an outie-- instead of an innie handle ?
Hi Tim, quick question please - what's the router bit for making the hand hold rebates likely to be called in UK? Do you have a recommendation where to get this shape bit? Sometimes special router bits can be frighteningly expensive. Also I wonder if the router needs to be one with a longer spindle than the ordinary cheap router machines to get that wide shallow handhold rebate? Is that why you swapped to the bigger router? Thanks!
kester ratcliff No idea what it's called Kester, sorry. They came in a box of assorted shapes for 20 euro, or something cheap like that. Have a look on Ebay? I think an ordinary router would do the job but you'd put the timber flat down on the bench and put the router directly on top. An ordinary round-ended router bit would work but you might need a few passes. Or you always just screw on a hand-hold!
Hi there, I'm also a beeworker from Hungary and I was wondering what kind of frames(I don't know the right word but I hope you get it) are that you use ? Are they without wire ? If so I would love to see a "how to make" video of them !! :)
Nagy Dániel Hi Nagy - I use Rose frames which are based on 'Nationals' (standard in the UK and Ireland). I cut down the side bars of the deep Nationals and put them together again as Rose frames. I'll make a video of that one of these days!
Hi Tim have you ever thought of doing a CD start to finish of the making of the Rose Boxes, looking after the bees through out the year, and finally processing the honey? I realize that you do show some videos of the above mentioned, just a thought.
This is a great video. How long do your boxes usually last? Also is there a reason your hives are all painted red? I'm new to beekeeping and am trying to learn as much as possible before I jump in.
+Dimitri Bianco They're only red because I like the colour. We live in a very wet part of the world so I expect to replace all these boxes within 3 - 5 years. Good luck with your beekeeping!
Wow, nice job! I was thinking this dude has a xooso load of big tools, lol.... made me a little envious. I am in the USA, an urbanite, and although I do have a smaller back yard, I'd have no room for all those tool machines! Is there a way to just buy these Rose HIves somewhere? Thanks from a bee and all-about-bees-lover!
If the frames are flush at the top, after you install the top cover would rest on the frames, then how are the bees crossing from frame to frame? Only thru the sides?
I have been searching for a good method of making hand holds. please tell me what shaper blades you are using. Will you please tell me where I might buy them and what they are called? I've searched several sites, but can't seem to find that profile. Thanks!!
Hi David, i'm live in Dublin and i'm doing my bee course at the end of this month. i am looking at building a national hive as i don't want my bee's in the supper, i am going to build 2 brood boxes this should be enough to hold about 15 ltrs so i'm told. Well if you have any advice for me i will be heading down to galway on the first of August for a holiday, if your near by id like to see your hives in action.
Dj Eddie Lloyd Hi Eddie - I don't know if this was intended for me (Tim)? Good to hear you're making hives - best of luck with them. I don't use brood boxes though, or supers. Just Rose boxes which are all the same size.
O right sorry about the name Tim. Yes it was meant for you. Is the honey Yield any different. Could i ask why you use the rose hive, i was looking at this type of hive myself but i didn't like the idea of the queen laying every where and larva all over the place, now correct me if i'm wrong. will any way are you near galway city, i'm in the galway bay for 3 days with my family for a short break. if you wouldn't mind id love to se your hives and how they compare to a national hive.
Gotcha tim! inches at the start of the video? Anyways did those butt joints last? I am planning to use rabbet joint just to make it stronger. Im using plywood.
Thanks for sharing.I've been thinking about getting into bee keeping for some time as our area is full of bees in the summer. I know very little about the subject so was interested in finding your video. Do you also make the trays that go inside the hive or do you buy these? Thanks again.
I like the ingenuity of your work shop. Especially using that scissor jack for the lengths. I’ll have to incorporate that.
hello friend, I am very impressed with the way you are cultivating bees. I am also a beekeeper, but a traditional breeder. I am very inspired by your video and very happy with your video, greetings from my traditional beekeeper from the province of Bengkulu, Indonesia🇮🇩🇮🇩🙏
greetings to you too, Ahmad : - )
Great video, very clear with the drawings. Cool jigs and adjustable saw stop.
*I am VERY jealous of your workshop.*
It took a long time!
Great idea to use the jack as an adjustable stop.
I live up in Fermanagh. Been wanting to start a couple of hives around the farm. Thought i may as well go the full way and make the boxes myself. Great guide
Your adjustable stop block was brilliant!

Glad you like it, Roy. It's mad that people round the world watch our little videos, but we're glad they do!
What an amzing workshop you have!
wish it was bigger : - )
I like the use of the scissor jack with your bench saw!
You made them look so easy to make
the car jack with your saw, that's a damn good idea! (Y)
Yup, just watched this video again and the scissor car jack stop block is out of a dream, again. Smart smart smart.
I just notice now the work carts at perfect outfeed height. I think many of us would welcome a detailed look at your favorite features in your shop.
Andrew Graves yeah i gotta make me a jig like that for this summer!
Very professionally done. I don't even have a saw! Impossible to make without electrical tools
Not impossible, just much more time-consuming.
Judging from his workshop he's your average beekeeper a mad man
but I have to say those hives look very very nice. I like the tint they got when you applied the sealant. And the gap in between each super so that the bees don't get squashed was a brilliant idea
👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🔔ruclips.net/video/44pDQzY9jow/видео.html
Five star video, those scraps will make a nice step stool.
Great video. Hive looks really good.

Best use of a scissors jack ever.

I love learning all the different beekeeping ways. But for your comment on "quick". This build seems to have more steps than a simple Langstroth.
As a fellow wood worker, i gotta highly recommend that you get a dust collector. Or at least wear a mask. Saw dust will cause loads of respiratory illnesses. Dust collectors also keep the place much cleaner.

Thanks from a bee and all-about-bees-lover!
you can buy rose hives in the U.S. through Marcell Campbell, blackstarseeds@gmail.com
If the frames are flush at the top, after you install the top cover would rest on the frames, then how are the bees crossing from frame to frame? Only thru the sides?
No, the crown board (top cover) has a built-in frame that allows a bee space.
Thank you for clarifying.
I have been searching for a good method of making hand holds.
please tell me what shaper blades you are using.
Will you please tell me where I might buy them and what they are called?
I've searched several sites, but can't seem to find that profile.
Thanks!!
I'm sorry but I have no idea what they're called. But mine came in a cheap set from Amazon I think, so I'm sure they're common. Good luck!
waaooo wonderful
thanks for the video :) . I just want to ask, do you use queen extruder?
No, I never use queen excluders
Great job man, due to my english I did not get the measures of the box, can you leave in your description. Thanks a lot.
I put them in the description..
Is ply wood ok for the bees? Great clip!
+Darrenholmes My bees don't seem to mind it at all, but I guess real wood would have fewer toxins in it. (Though all wood has toxins in apparently.)

Awesome, thanks!
Thank you! : - )
