I treat the portal as another controller. Any elite or extra button controller will cost $120-200, but this one has a screen so you can leave the room or house.
They should have included an option to connect directly to the console, just like the WiiU gamepad did. Then we could have zero lag, and it could also have been used for dualscreen functions, when playing on the TV, by showing inventory and maps on the Portal screen. Wifi only, was a stupid choice...
Omg I didn't even think of that, it would be so cool to be able to play something like Fallout 4 and have the pip boy on there. I wonder why they didn't do that. If they ever make a follow up Portal or a portal 2 they should do it. Ill come back to this comment if they do.
The 8 inch screen is nice since it’s still about the same length of my Steamdeck but with more screen. With the handles you can hold it one hand fairly easy with Deck not really. I like you get the same Dual Sense experience in a handheld the feedback is about the same but on Deck and Switch the rumble and haptics are not good. If you can’t wire to your PS5 because of location you can get good results with the Powerline 2000 adapter that works with outlets and you can use it with other remote play devices, I got great results with it.
Thanks for sharing! Yeah I agree the screen and overall ergonomics are much nicer than the switch as well as haptics. i’ve actually have been looking for a powerline adapter. My PS5 is not currently wired so i’m sure that would help with random drops i get!
I had earlier this year ; and had no idea I couldn't use a different network, outside my home to connect. I sold it the next day. Has that limitation changed?
@@Prince_Sidon Good question, yes playstation released an update and you can use it from networks outside of your home network now. In the video I was about 20 miles from my home and it was still working!
I have a Legion GO, ROG Ally, Steam Deck OLED and wanted the ps portal due to ergonomics. After having it a day it is more comfortable but I dont know if its worth keeping when I have the other devices.
@@glmorten i think that’s a valid reason. i would say if there is ps exclusive that can only be played on ps then it would be good to keep just for those. But if you don’t mind just playing it on your ps5 since you already own it then really there’s no need for the portal.
@@emi777 So I have given it more time... Its worth keeping at 199 imo. The experience and plug and play and how well it just works plus the haptic feedback with the controllers.... I played through Ratchet and Clank a rift apart without getting up practically, besides going to the bathroom and eating... guess what I can do both of those things with a portal too! I am keeping it.

you can take it to your friends house and as long as there is wifi you can connect to it will work, because it is a remote player it will have to connect to your ps5 as long as you can connect you are good to go. As far as fortnite it’ll work great just know that it’s capped at 60fps.
PS Vita can do everything this does and much more all for $100 less, it looks great but Sony forgot they already made a gem of a handheld. Like we forgot what they were capable of LOL VITA means LIFE

sony recommends 15mbs for a smooth experience! i have around 100mbs down on my internet plan and that works great. My PS5 is also not wired and still feels really smooth! Great question!
If you're gaming on your local network at home, internet speed isn't the primary concern. Instead, focus on ensuring a solid network setup. Make sure your PS5 is connected via Ethernet rather than WiFi, and avoid using WiFi connected repeaters. If you're using network switches, ensure they are of decent quality, and use good quality Cat6 cables for the best performance. Internet speed is only important if your playing outside your house through internet.

@@emi777 Ontop of that I already stream my ps5 to all of those devices via Chiaki. In fact the Deck OLED has HDR support, where the portal does not.
