- August 2023 marks 78 years since the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended World War II. “CBS Mornings” previously interviewed two survivors who recalled the Aug. 6, 1945, bombing that destroyed Hiroshima. CBS News foreign correspondent Ramy Inocencio interviewed Toshiko Tanaka in August 2020 and CBS News senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang spoke with Tayeko Shitama in May 2023.

She said something so simple and yet it's just so true.
They should have thought of this when they were trying to annihilate our young navy sailors on ships on Pearl Harbor and starting World War Two with Hitler. My grandfather who was on the USS Arizona, has another set of horror stories of men burning and drowning in Oahu on December 7. No one cares what these people have to say.
It’s a lovely sentiment but there’s no way to put this back into Pandora’s box. It’s only the threat of mutually assured destruction that has kept people from using it again, a ban is just not realistic now that countries like North Korea are beginning to experiment with the technology. Lovely sentiment, terrible idea. You can’t pretend that it’s not there.

I used to work in a travel agent in Hiroshima for nearly two years in early 1980`s, and many A-bomb survivors were alive at that time. As far as I knew, none of them had gludge against Americans, but they strongly wished that Hiroshima and Nagasaki would be the first and last A-bombed cities in the world.

My mother was also a Hiroshima bomb survivor and up until recently was 1 of the maybe 1000 survivors left who migrated to the US. She passed away a couple weeks ago and lived to be 95 years old. Throughout the early years of my childhood, I remember as far back as when I was about 6 years old when my mother started to share with me bits and pieces over the decades of my life what took place that day on August 6th and of the events leading up to and prior to the day(which spared her life and the lives of her parents and siblings) the bomb had dropped on her city and of the horror she saw days and weeks afterwards. I'll never forget these stories of her life that she so sadly shared with me as I know it helped shape me into the person I am today. Most of all, I understand now more than ever why things like "having hope", and her always telling me til the day she passed away that "everything happens for a reason" and that "nothing is coincidence" were so profoundly important to her and for me too!
Wow! I am very sorry for your loss. You should really write about it and make a book for your kids and future generations. You don’t even need to try and publish it but just get it down on paper.

This just breaks my heart. Why do civilians have to suffer? During wars it’s always the civilians taking the hit for higher up government officials despite having little to do with the conflict, it’s sickening and is probably one of the worst byproducts of humankind existing

my great grandmother was a survivor of hiroshima. she raised 9 children and died at 90 the youngest being my grandmother. shes the strongest person i know but never got to meet. shes the reason i always answer past when people ask "would you rather travel to the past or future"

From 1942 to 1945, the Japanese, tortured, raped, killed brutally more than 500,000 Filipinos leaving them in poverty, destroyed families, and many others. We should learn from the past that war is anything but the greediness and cruelty from selfish governments.

I remember hearing a story of a man who was near but somehow didn’t get burned he was in a big building. He ran out and a little boy was mutilated crying saying “mommy mommy I need water” and then laid down and cried then passed away.
Lots of the guys who created the bombs had to live with this haunting realization and never recovered. It saved many lives but destroyed many too.
How about those who died at Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 from the unprovoked Japanese attack?

@@3dartistguythat was a military base but the US targeted cities that didn’t have military bases in them. My grandfather served and survived Pearl Harbor. He didn’t agree with the atomic bombing in Japan.
@@CatalinaAldapeHiroshima was the headquarters of Japans second army and had a pretty big housing of military personnel. But Hiroshima and the other cities were also selected for their industry and trade to cut off as much of the Japanese supply as possible.
I was lucky enough to visit Hiroshima and speak to an in-utero A-bomb survivor, Mr. Kosei Mito. It was a humbling experience and he was kind enough to share with my so much of the history of Hiroshima and the bomb. His mother is also still alive, she is 105. It's important we carry on these memories for the future.
I grew up in Oak Ridge Tennessee which is where most of the parts of the atomic bomb were built unbeknownst to the scientists that were building it. It was called The Secret City back then. A city that the government built. A city that did not exist on a map. The people that had their hands in building the bomb were absolutely horrified when they found out what it was being used for. It's terrible what we did to that country. Japan sent us a gift of cherry blossom trees that still line a park there. To signify forgiveness and peace. It hurts my heart every time I see them blooming

you are right that such evil should never happen again, such powerful weapons are terrible for humanity, but on the other hand, it annoys me that people forget what monstrous crimes Japan was committing at that time and why that bomb was dropped. The Japanese army tortured and brutally killed Americans, Australians, and other nations involved in the Pacific War, and moreover tortured and brutally raped civilians from all these countries, including many Asian countries. Read about the fate of the 'comfort women', read about Japanese concentration camps, read about Unit 731. This is the stuff of the nightmares. Japan was an ally of Hitler, part of the axis of evil during World War II, and to this day has not taken responsibility for its crimes, including those against other Asian nations, such as the Chinese, for example.

The bombing was terrible, but it was a necessary evil to force Japan to surrender and stop its war crimes. They, along with Germany started this war, and supported murderous ideology, not Americans, in this particular case.

Context helps you understand why certain people take certain actions; and why it is more morally grey than you think. The survivors of Hiroshima knows this context, which is why they were able to forgive the US.

People choose to forgive for their own personal reasons, it's a decision they alone are qualified to make, they don't need the validations of others. We know the bombings would later lead to the Cold War scare for decades. NATO and Russia could start WW3 tomorrow, it will affect the entire human population.

As someone who studied geography, I love what she said: "Please make more friends from other countries."
When I was a graduate student, I lived in a six-bedroom home in Baltimore. Over the course of the 18 months that I lived there, I had the good fortune of meeting new people, almost all of whom were foreigners. The French student would hold gatherings where I would meet even more foreigners.
I found it to be one of the most enjoyable and exciting moments of my life because I didn't (and still don't) have the money to travel the world. Yet, so many people from all over the world came to the US; I just happened to position myself at the right place and time to meet them. I would come to enjoy the company of and with whom I'm still friends to this day.
What a beautiful woman who wants peace. I pray that every country gets rid of all nuclear weapons.

When I hear some Americans talk about the bombs, I often hear excuses: the Japanese war machine would have sacrificed many more lives and fought to the end, etc. Maybe that's true, and the fascist regime there was imperialist and evil, but targeting civilians (which is what this effectively was) was inexcusable and evil too. These women are commendable for speaking out.

I know that the atomic bombs saved many American lives. But I won’t deny the fact that these bombs were evil and that Japan may have blood on their hands so do we but millions of civilians dying within seconds. That’s not an easy pill to swallow.

My brothers father in law (USMC) was on a troop ship off the coast of Japan in August 1945. He & his buddies had already survived several island battles. When they were talking on the ship none of them thought they would survive the invasion. My father in law (USN) was on a destroyer escort in the Pacific at this same time, they were waiting for orders to form up with a task force. Fortunately they both made it home and I got to hear their stories first hand. To me those stories took on a whole new light hearing them from family that was there, and had also participated in many battles. It's hard to say if they would have made it home if there had been an invasion. Based on the stories they told me I would say they wound not have made it home. We miss you Brownie & Norm. FLY NAVY!!!

What is more heart breaking is what the Japanese were doing during WW2. Look up the Raping of Nanjing.
I feel bad for these innocent people. However, as a Korean, I must say it was necessary. What the Japanese did in Asia during the war absolutely horrendous. They took menand made them work in terribl conditions and dumped their bodies in a hole. They took our women as sex slaves. They used people for their experiments(unit 731)… They were given many chances to stop but didn’t. This bomb freed us. Too bad that their government didn’t care about their citizens but was busy protecting their pride.

The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are famous, but other than that, many of Japan's major cities have been burned by air raids.
For example, the bombing of Tokyo on March 10, 1945 killed 100,000 people, many of whom were not properly buried and still remain underground in Tokyo. Therefore, it can be said that Tokyo, which is prospering now, is a huge graveyard.
The incendiary bomb dropped by the B29 contained gasoline and was effective in burning up a wooden Japanese house. The attack method was to drop a bomb on the outer circumference of the city, surround it with fire and prevent the citizens inside from escaping, and burned 100,000 people to death. In this way, by the end of the war, more than one million civilians had died.

Death toll of the Great Tokyo Air Raid on March 10th, 1945 was almost equivalent or even higher than those of A-bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But unlike firebombings on Tokyo and other cities in Japan, A-bombs were not conventional weapons, and they could pose grave threat to the existence of humankinds. Of course, firebombings on civilians should not be neglected and forgotten.
maybe because the fact Imperial Japan was also bombing civilians in Korea and China...they weren't innocent in WW2. they killed 30 million people (in the most brutal ways) in Asia in a 6 year span...

During WWII Japan killed 250,000 Chinese civilians in retaliation for the Doolittle raid on Tokyo. Any village within 20 miles of the escape route used by the American flyers was attacked, all the men and boys killed, the women raped and then sent to "comfort stations" to be sex slaves for the Japanese Army. Chinese farmland and water wells were poisoned, causing even more famine and death. Excuse me if I have no empathy for the Japanese civilians that suffered during a war they started and conducted with less humanity than the Mongols.

What about the impact of Mao Zedong's Great Leap policy, which resulted in over 55 million deaths? Additionally, there were 15 million deaths following the annexation of Tibet. Why hasn't the US considered utilizing atomic bombs in Beijing or other locations where the CCP holds military power? The death toll from China's Great Famine alone surpasses the combined casualties of World War I and World War II.

Remember for many years the video footage reflecting the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was classified and not allowed to be openly viewed in the us.
And now share some stories from the Rape of Nanking, the Bataan Death March, Unit 731, the Comfort Women, etc.
Those who were responsible for he Rape of Nanking, the Bataan Death March, Unit 731, the Comfort Women etc. must be indicted as war criminals and punished. In fact, many of them were punished. But we should have in mind is that victimized civilians of A-bombs are immune to such war crimes. I think A-bombings over civilians should be in the same category of he Rape of Nanking, the Bataan Death March, Unit 731, the Comfort Women.

i saw some interviews of former imperial japanese soldiers involved in the nanking massacre, they showed no remorse at all.
They reaped the whirlwind of the war they started.
Who were they? Japanese civilians who were A-bombed were not responsible for the outbreak of war.
Eliminating wars and dictators is the pathway to peace but we will never see that happen.
Eliminate the UN, Nato, and all U.S. military bases overseas.
That real tragedy is thinking your country thinking they’re superior and refusing to surrender.

I am Japanese. Although I have many feelings toward the United States, which detonated this incredibly powerful bomb over the heads of hundreds of thousands of civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan and the United States are now friendly countries. However, if the enemy had been Germany, I don't think they would have used nuclear weapons. This is because from the perspective of Americans who were Japanese, it was an Asian nation.

Wonderful interviews and survivors. I do wonder why the precious tree resides in DC but I'll try to keep an open mind.
I’d imagine because they were given in a time of peace and specifically by the mayor of Tokyo that maybe that had something to do with it? My other though would be that it could be because of the logistics of removing them? I feel like the National mall would be quite empty without them so they would probably want to replace with different trees? Idk. Just spit balling here but it is something I wonder about. Like if it came up in conversation during the war.
I acknowledge this war cruelty done by the dropping of atomic bomb in Nagasaki and Hiroshima but Imperial Japan did alot of horrible things around Asia during WW2. My maternal grandfather was badly beaten by Japanese soldiers back home in the Philippines (good thing he survived) Manila was destroyed, many died in the death march in Bataan and never forget the rape of nanking.

Japan is talking about peace now but many people know that Japan was also doing gruesome things at that time & God punished them hard.

We will never know how many people would have died had these bombs not been dropped. Could have been more, could have been less. But regardless, no Japanese deserved to suffer the burns and trauma that lady did.

It's a good thing the bombs the US dropped were not dirty bombs and the area of the explosion occurred in the sky and not the ground or there wouldn't be any survivors at all to speak about this. If that wasn't the case, Hiroshima and Nagasaki would have been uninhabitable like Chernobyl because of the radiation. 😢

Radiations from an atomic bomb and nuclear reactor have different intensities.
The radioactive waste generated from an atomic bomb is far less than that of a nuclear reactor, though it does have a longer impact at the spur of the moment, but over a period of time, it can be cleaned and the place again can be made habitable for ppl, whereas places around chernobyl or Fukushima Daichii nuclear power plant become absolutely inhabitable for ppl.

the dilemma would be if we were to eliminate all nuclear weapons, is meant that conventional warfare would be large scale nothing would hold anyone back from starting wars, everyone would start to conquer beyond borders. just like how both world wars were fought, we would go back to that time period were it was easy to invade surrounding nations. we are at peace with nuclear weapons preventing ourselves from destroying one another. knowing we each had nuclear weapons.

Pearl harbor, of course, and all the horrific things the Japanese has done in Asia. 200,000 murdered just the Nanking Massacre as a starter. Civilian victims of Japanese war crime is estimated at 5,964,000. When we look at the atomic bombs, we must also take into account what Japanese has done prior to the bombs during the WW2. More people would have died if the Japanese was not stopped.

These bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, plus the Soviet Union declaring war on Japan, led to the surrender. These bombings ended the war, and started the nuclear disarmament movement. These survivors had nothing to do with the atrocities committed by their country’s military, but they were negatively affected by the bombings. We need to think twice, because there was one streamer who came to Japan and insulted its citizens by bragging about the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The bombs weren't used to hasten the end for convenience. The bombs were used to hopefully reduce the amount of casualties a prolonged battle would inevitably accumulate.
Remember, they had 3 bombs ready to do and only used 2. The 3rd became the demon core used in later experiments.

Maybe CBS should inform its audience about the atrocities committed by the Japanese army for a change. They killed at least 10x more civilians (Chinese, Filipino, etc.) than Japanese civilians that died during WW2.

Let us not forget the atrocities the japanese soldiers did during ww2 in SE Asia, China, Pearl Harbor. So many civilians killed by the japanese soldiers. Not to mention the comfort women they repeatedly raped including minors. And Japan never apologized until now.
Much as it pains me to learn how Hiroshima and Nagasaki got nuked, I would say Japan had it coming because if not, Japan would continue its genocidal campaign against China and Korea. So in a sense, the Japanese Government killed these people and made the survivors suffer, not just America.
