A great treasure hunt movie is Romancing the Stone (1984). It has everything you want in a movie. Action, adventure, romance, comedy, etc... You name it, it has it.
I want two tentatively gay men alone on a mountain in Wyoming in the 1960s. Does Romancing the Stone have that? I THINK NOT!

Christopher Plummer has been around for a long time and been in a lot of movies. Most recently he was the patriarch in "Knives Out" but yeah he's most famous for "Sound of Music".

Nicolas Cage WAS in major debt after the housing market crash and after making very extreme and weird purchases (He bought a castle, bought a haunted mansion, a dinosaur skull, etc). He never actually declared bankruptcy, and just took any movie that was willing to pay him enough, it's why in the 2000's he was in so many terrible straight to DVD movies. But he's paid off that debt now; he's proud of the fact that he never went bankrupt, worked hard and repaid all his debts. He became a bit of a joke in Hollywood for a time because of that debt and the work he had to do to pay it off, but I'd say his career is on a resurgence now that he can pick more interesting/better films again.
I think one of those straight-to-DVD titles actually did well enough on DVD that it was later released in theaters. One of only a handful of movies to ever get shown in theaters “backwards,” that is, home video first, and theaters later.

I guess I would've assumed that maybe you already had, but If you liked this and haven't, you should see "The DaVinci Code" trilogy, or at least just the original alone. I haven't figured out why there are barely any reactions to it. Unless everyone's just already seen it. If you have absolutely no idea what I'm even talking about. They were a series of books written by Dan Brown, centered around the character of Robert Langdon, and "The DaVinci Code" became a world wide phenomenon, so of course there was a Movie made, then two more movies from the series, "Angels and Demons" and "Inferno". I think there's actually 7 books in the series. Anyways, that's what set off this historical based fiction/mystery thing, and these National Treasure movies were really just exploiting the hype, but if you really haven't seen "The DaVinci Code", you really should. Those that read the book, weren't as satisfied with the movie, but what are you going to do. It's almost always that way! Very rare that the movie is as good as the book, and not to get into my whole long spiel about it, but Novel writing and screenwriting are really two different art forms, both with their separate pros and cons. If you like this style of movie though, it is basically the movie that created the mold.
I could be totally wrong, but there are quite a few really good movies that few, if any, reactors include. I think it's because some films get constantly copyright-blocked.
@@kpiperjr I'm sure you're probably right, but sometimes I'm also just surprised at some things that just fall through the cracks, and people just don't know, when you'd definitely think they do. Even with the ones that have copyright issues, some of them still get through, but what do I know.

For a treasure hunt type movie I recommend Sneakers (1992). It is not exactly a treasure hunt, but it has that kind of vibe.
The good thing about these kinds of movies is you'll be able to show them to your son and watch it with him together.

I think I saw that story too. Some guy who snuck into all kinds of concerts, the Super Bowl, World Series, etc just by being confident and acting like he belonged.
And, of course, there’s the DiCaprio/Hanks film, Catch Me If You Can. Aware of the issues some have with the source material, but still an entertaining film on the surface.

Our history may not go back as far as Europe or Asia, but we do have one.
US history is short compared to a lot of European countries but it has been very influential.
We've packed a *_lot_* of history into the past 300 years. Our history books are just as thick as any European country.

Silence Dogood was one of the pen names used by Benjamin Franklin. Franklin would usually use the persona of Silence Dogood, supposedly a late 18th century, New England housewife to absolutely roast situations and establishments of the time.
Little missed detail the Doogood letters was to his brothers' paper that he left as a runaway slave. He used the false name to avoid being reenslaved

This movie was very entertaining when it came out and really hooks you with the hunt and even ties in some history along the way. Another treasure hunt themed movie that is more of a mystery drama but equally as good is, "The Da Vinci Code" with Tom Hanks.
Absolutely check out Raising Arizona. As you may or may not have seen, it's a comedy - which you always say you like to get more recommendations of - and a Coen brothers film, which if I remember correctly you've already enjoyed Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No Country for Old Men. I think you'd really enjoy it. Have a great day.
See, this is why I like Mary's reactions: Within just a few minutes, she: 1) even though she didn't recognise Christopher Plummer she did recognise his voice by connecting it with "The Sound of Music", 2) she makes a references to that infamous song by Smokie which I guess is getting obscure now, 3) "Is Sean Bean dying already?" :D Btw., back then my search engine of choice was Alta Vista but I do remember using Yahoo from time to time. Totally fun movie-- some of the coolest writers in Hollywood worked for years to get all the fun tricks and clues and reveals worked out. The sequel is also great fun.
The sequel and the Divinci Code are also great puzzle solving adventures!
Fun fact Ben Franklin was a runaway slave and the doogood letters was to his former owner, his brother and newspaper owner in NYC. He used the false name to avoid recapture while establishing his own paper in PA. He did reconcile later. Franklin's autobiography is a great read but it does disapoint as it ends around the revolution and little of the later life is included.

Being shocked with a TASER in order to carry only applies to some people that use them for a job. Or people that live in the handful of states that restrict their ownership.
Great movie and great voice :) .National Treasure is a great franchise that made two great movies in a roll which is really hard to do. Sean Bean performance as the bad guy is awesome in this movie and of course all the good gang are awesome as well. Nick Cage has some other great movies like Con Air, Face Off ,The Sorcerer apprentice. Snake Eyes and 8mm which is quite a shocking movie.
Other great adventure movies are The Count Of Monte Cristo 2002 and Prince Of Persia 2010. A great father and son movie is Frequency 2000.
A Nick Cage movie. I guess this means my campaign to have someone do a reaction to Lord of War has just expanded to include this one. Other than it being a great movie the opening credits are so god damn good, it deserves a watch for that alone!

The Rock (1996) is another great Nicolas Cage action movie. His only Oscar is from Leaving Las Vegas (1995). It's a tough movie to watch, emotionally, but well worth it.

This was my first NC movie. Such a good actor. The second one is good too. I still have it on VHS 📼

Even though this movie is a twist on American history, I have very fond memories of my history teachers having this movie play during classes through the years.
"Fun" is the perfect word to describe this movie. Start to finish it puts a smile on your face. As others have said, The DaVinci Code movies are excellent puzzle-solving flicks, although they are much darker in nature. If you watch Raising Arizona, you need to know beforehand that it is a Cohen brothers (O Brother Where Art Thou, Fargo, etc.) movie and very wacky/off the wall. It's definitely funny.

Arizona is a high mark for Cage. Kick ass is a fun action movie & Nicks supporting role is excellent. One of his initial scenes made me bust-out laugh in shock. go for both!
"Sahara" with Matthew McConaughey is a good movie similar in type to this movie, derived from author Clive Cussler's (who was also a Treasure Hunter) Dirk Pitt character. Alright, alright. alright... 🙂 Hows the Baby, where are the Kitties?
National Treasure 2 is definitely worth watching. I would also definitely recommend giving Kick-Ass and Raising Arizona a try as well when you can.

Another fun fact a pair of specs was included in a time capsule Independence Hall made by Franklin. Opened in 1976
"The goonies" is like a kid version of this and "the DaVinci code" also has a simalar chain of puzzles thing going for it.

Also, Raising Arizona is a CLASSIC! It’s one of those movies that has a “cult following.”

Kick Ass is great and Raising Arizona is next level hilarious.
This was one of those last films that captured that excited feeling for me. Not to sound cliché but they really don't make good (and fun) movies like this anymore.
"Raising Arizona" is a classic. Early Coen Bros movie. "Family Man" is a very nice Holiday Movie. Shades of It's a Wonderful Life.
Both this and "Raising Arizona" are masterpieces.

Nic Cage was 6 million dollars in debt a few years ago when the real estate market crashed. He owned like 15 multimillion dollar mansions including a couple of castles in Europe. He stared in a bunch of b movies to avoid bankruptcy and pay his creditors. He’s ok now.
As someone with a pacemaker/defibrillator...I just figure a taser would kill me. I might even be alive long enough to know it hurts.

You might consider The Italian Job 2003. It is a heist movie that is very clever and has a similar feel to National Treasure.

Nicholas Cage is just awesome, He's one of those actors who has done soo much in his career, from comedy, drama, action and horror and yet in like 40 years he looks and acts the same

For the international audience, they changed a couple of lines.
When Ben figures out her password is Valley Forge, the US version has the line "She pressed 'E' and 'L' twice." Obviously, the American audience would already know the importance of Valley Forge. The US line also explains why Riley didn't have Valley Forge on his list - his list assumes each key was pressed only once.
Secret invisible writing is written in lemon juice and exposed with heat. You don't spread lemon juice on it again to reveal the writing. But in the movie they did for some reason.
That wasn't the kind used, there were several types of invisible ink, both citric acid and pee is brought out by heat alone but can be detected easy and all sides knew the trick as even Romans used it. Washington is documented as buying a special type used by his top spies that required a two part reactant to bring out the print. I don't remember the book name or all the details but it was about Washington's spy network.
Violating a grave would be "desecration" (the act of treating (a sacred place or thing) with violent disrespect; violating it.),
and you could describe it as sacrilege or sacrilegious (violation or misuse of what is regarded as sacred.)
As for codes of the day, at the time of Washington Code wheels were common with simple replacement on a two track wheel with the alphabet printed twice, perhaps varried order. By the Civil War while dating to Romans a mutiple wheel cypher became more common, also double letter replacements. With the wheels an added rotation of the code as one went prevented simple replacement cracking. A might be C if first letter or F if second and so on. That is why as of WWII computers became needed to crack codes unless one got a key or a code machine.

I’m amazed more people aren’t into Red Rock West. One of the only movies ever to be released to home video first, and then get released in theaters because home video sales were so strong. 🤔

FYI, the declaration of independence was kept at Fort Knox during World War II. The British government also sent over the Crown jewels and the Magna Carta to be kept in Fort Knox.

Always interesting to see non Americans react to this movie because this is very much an **AMERICA** film with tons of references to our history and Founding Fathers. Like "Valley Forge" won't mean anything to you but for Americans (who didn't sleep in history class) will know that was the winter quarters of George Washington and his army, who suffered many set backs in the year before and was probably the lowest point in the Revolution but through a strict period of training emerged as a new, trained army for the new year of fighting.
Raising Arizona - you'll be able to closely relate to how the ball gets rolling. And there's a baby.

yes on the taser thing. When I was training to be a 911 operator we took a lunch to help them clean up when the cops in training had to do that. They also have to do it with the pepper spray- and they have to pass a test with that where they have to continue to fight through it after being sprayed- they can't be taken down and subdued by the "suspect" for a minute after being sprayed. I think that's how it went, anyway.
My grandpa was a Shriner. Maybe one of my ancestors was a Templar also ;-)

When I was working security at a college you had to be pepper sprayed before you could carry it. Probably true about the taser.
In addition to Davinci Code, Romancing the Stone, and Holes (which are lighthearted action-adventure movies about finding treasure), I'd recommend Night at the Museum, Men in Black, and Sherlock Holmes (2009, with Robert Downy Jr.) as having a similar comedy-action-adventure tone to National Treasure.
My favorite Nicholas Cage movie is Face Off.

Great one to watch with a bit of a treasure hunt as well as adventure, revenge, and a bit of mystery is The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) -- I never get tired of watching it!
Others that come to mind that are somewhat different but still gripping and/or exciting are The Mask of Zorro and Absolute Power.

In certain profession we are required to be tased as part of the certification process to carry a Taser. Unlike tv and movies they do not render people unconscious. Also certain professions we must be exposed to pepper spray and or CS gas to be certified to deploy it.
Raising Arizona, is a funny movie. A good watch. National Treasure, it is an interesting patriotic movie, I love it myself. Enjoy your reaction.
