Can you pls explain why the T gives the nominative case? I watched ur vid on case theory but still don’t get the reason

      hi!
I've arrived four years late but i hope i can help you out.
it has to do with case theory and Burzio's generalisation for passives: every sentence, in order to be considered grammatical needs to assign abstract case to every DP (check out Case Theory). there is a problem with passives and Burzio explains it as: there is no external argument (subject/agent) so the verb cannot assign the accusative case to the theme "the puppy". the nominative case is ALWAYS assigned to the DP filling the position of Specifier TP.

    Have a question.
Why is the following sentence is ungrammatical?
The result must have not been found by the candidate.
Is it because negation can not interfere between modal and passive? Can you recommend a paper for me to understand? Or could you please explain why.

      It’s not ungrammatical.

@@Trevtutor should it not be “The result must not have been found by the candidate.? Shouldn’t the places of not and have be reversed?

The Neg can be inserted anywhere along the string of verbs and auxiliaries but not before the modal.
      Not have been leaving
      Have not been leaving
Have been not leaving (a little weird but fine)

@@Trevtutor I didn’t know that, is there any paper I can read about for further theoretical background.

Hi! Whats the difference between theta role and theta criterion?

    • @soumyatarinimishra2043
      @soumyatarinimishra2043 2 года назад +2

First if you know what thematic relations are, you must know that theta roles and thematic relations are not the same. Theta roles are bundles of thematic relations clustering on one agreement which basically means that a theta role can be a combination of multiple thematic relations.
Now to your question, theta roles are roles assigned by the verb to the arguments.
And these are represented on the theta grid.
Theta criterion is basically rules imposed on X-bar theory so it doesn't go on wildly producing sentences. There are basically two criterions.
      1. Each argument is assigned only one theta role.
      2. Each theta role is assigned to only one argument.
So, basically theta criterions call for a one to one match between theta roles and NPs/DPs present.
Edit- I'd also like to add that many places use thematic relations and theta roles are interchangeable entities and terms.
And I hope this helped. You can refer to Syntax by Andrew Carnie. It explains this nicely and in short
