Mitchell Stewart Mustain (born February 27, 1988) is a former professional football and baseball player. He did not play baseball in college, opting instead to pursue a football career. He played baseball at Springdale High School in Springdale, Arkansas, and football under present Auburn University head football coach Gus Malzahn. Mustain also played college football at Southern California (USC). Mustain played his first year of college football at the University of Arkansas in 2006 before transferring to USC in 2007. Under NCAA transfer rules, he sat out the 2007 season and started playing for USC in the 2008 season.
Since junior high school, Mustain had accumulated a record of 62-3 (.953) as a starting quarterback (9-1 in eighth grade in 2001, 10-0 in both ninth grade in 2002 and 10th grade in 2003, 12-1 in 11th grade in 2004, 14-0 in 12th grade in 2005, 8-0 as a freshman at Arkansas in 2006, 0-1 in 2010 at USC).

Not unlucky, Malzahn and Nutt screwed him over big time. Nutt needed to land "The Springdale five" to appease boosters and the athletic department. He knew hiring Malzahn would be his best chance to get them. Malzahn took the job lnowing Nutt wouldn't implement his offense, and it was just a way to get his foot in the door as an NCAA Coach, knowing he would be let go after the season. It's long been said that Malzahn knew Nutt would never run Malzahn's offense, but recuited the Springfield kids lying to them saying it would be his offense. Nutt never really wanted Mustain and did everything he could to get Mustsin to leave. Malzahn used his stepping stone to het the head coaching job at Tulsa and Mustain transferred to USC. To this day Malzahn continually offers Mustain positions on his staff. Likely because he feels guilty about lying to the kid and screwing up his college career.

Bingo. Nutt pulled him way too early and the big question mark is really what could have been. If Nutt let go of his pride and had faith for those kids & Mahlzahn maybe we would see Mitch Mustain in a totally different light. The really unfortunate reality of those teams in 2006 and 2007 was that the talent pool was really homegrown. McFadden was from Little Rock. Hillis was from Conway. Felix Jones was from Tulsa but that’s an hour and a half away from Arkansas. Damian Jones, Ben Cleveland, Mitch Mustain, and Alex Tejada were from Springdale.
Arkansas normally has a pretty small pool of recruits that are legitimately capable of performing at the highest level especially in the sec. It’s sad for the state of Arkansas. Wasted opportunity.

Nutt looks as stupid as his name suggests. Broyals and other morons who loved his below average style were Lucky enough to make $ but showed how I’ll equipped they were as needling boosters. Mitch lacked a father influence and got bullied into an awful program for his skill set. However what Nutt did to him with Dick (only in Arkansas can you have these as real characters) was a disgrace

@@useyourimaginaseanHe finished his career at Arkansas with 10 TDs and 9 int. He wasn't "pulled too soon." He wasn't a good D1 QB. Hints his piss poor stats at USC the two following years after he left. Gtfoh. You guys are goofy.

Gus Malzahn owes his college coaching career to Mitch Mustain.

Fun story, most of yall don't know this but that right there is why he fizzled. Yeah, the coaches did him dirty, but mitch went from Addy king to coke lord and it was kept hush hush.

Mitch was the man in NW Arkansas when I was in high school. We all thought he’d be a professional QB. We’d never really seen anyone that good in that area before. It’s a shame how it all went from there.

Mitch would of been famous on MTV because MTV had a deal for the number 1 ranked high school football team in the nation to have a TV SHOW, yet, Hoover high school who is ranked 2nd got the deal with MTV instead of Springdale High school bulldogs in Springdale Arkansas who was ranked 1st in the whole nation undefeated 14-0 in state and 4-0 in the nation

I remember when he tried track and field with Damián Williams D was fast. His games were awsome to watch live. Its sad to see how his career didnt work out so well. Spanking fayeteville on their own turf and mercy rule them was one of the greatest feeling 🤟🤟🤟🤟

He was in the unfavorable position to have a coach who just wanted to run the ball at Arkansas. (Darren Mcfadden, Felix Jones) Looking back, he prob should have went somewhere else than Arkansas. So much potential. I blame Houston Nutt for this guys downfall. Malzahn did little to fight for Mitch" potential. Casey Dick was not the better QB. And Frank Broyles was a joke of a AD who loved Nutt. Just bad luck for Mitch.

8-0 as a starter at Arkansas, if I remember right. Now, most of that was a great defensive line and McFadden/Jones, but still.

I think Mitch Mustain was a little overrated. Malzahn's coaching and Williams as a WR made him look a lot better than he was. Looking back at his film, his arm strength wasn't as strong as you'd expect from a top QB.

When we start the Game of football the window of dreams is vast. But like our very existence that window begins to close, quickly for some slower for others. But it eventually closes for us all. Mitch had some great days on the gridiron, more than most. I hope he does well! Politics YUK!!

Mitch would of been in the NFL if not for how shit played out. He fit Arkansas to a tee the program was just in a weird spot where too many people were trying to run the ship. Mitch had an ego issue but Nutt should of been more open to adjusting it. If they could of made it work till that next season comes along Arkansas history is completely different. Its unfortunate for all sides because I believe it would of been beneficial to all sides. You have 3 future nfl rbs in one backfield so its hard to not feed them
