I did it! It took about 2 hours including jacking the whole truck up so it would be level and taking my time. Just under 3 quarts. I have 28k on my new to me 4R. I use it off road a lot so I’m going to do this twice a year. Thanks again!

I appreciate videos like this because I accidentally dumped maybe a half quart (maybe 1) of ATF the other day doing my first oil change. Dealership wants to do a complete flush at 15k. I just want to do a top-off. This video helps!

Whatup brother!! I know this is an old video, but watching because I haven’t seen it. I had my 21’ 4Runner TRD ORP transmission drain & fill done yesterday at my local shop. Was $266 and it was three quarts that they drained out and replaced. It shifted even smoother after the job. I didn’t think I’d notice but I did! I’ve got 52,264 miles and it was my first drain & fill. I’ll do it every 30k miles and it’ll keep a mostly clean fluid base and A LOT safer than doing a flush! Don’t want to force some sludge or dirt into a solenoid or any of the tiny spaces. I completely forgot to get a sample to send to the lab, but that’s ok, I’ll do it next time. I personally don’t want to risk damaging my tranny by not getting the correct amount back in as I don’t have a scan tool and don’t trust the laser temp guns enough. Just easier for me to have them do it and take the liability. I’m sure I could do it I’ve done all the other fluids and do a lot more significant mechanican on my girls car and friends cars. Sometimes letting y’all pro’s handle it is the best option. Love the content brother 🤙

Follow all of Vikings tutorials and you can’t go wrong. This bro is a Toyota mechanic I trust all his recommendations and especially when he tells you…for this service only use OEM fluids. He will tell you when you can use OEM and when you can substitute. I now. Only use Durago rotors based on his recommendation

If you drain the pan with the oil cold and you refill with the oil cold it has to work. I’ve seen people say it want but school of common sense says it will. Need to add a cup or do extra for lost measurement in oil adhesion to containers. Open overflow plug and make sure just a little runs out. Just be sure the vehicle is level before starting and remove the upper fill plug before you drain the fluid.

My dealer is giving me grief over the idea of wanting to change the fluid. I haul a camper around for half the year. I also have an aftermarket transmission cooler. The way they were talking it was as if I poured sand in my engine block. I appreciate your videos

So I ended up spending $25 on obd fusion in order to do this job right. $10 for app $15 for toyota lexus specific upgrade to read trans temp. I tried the obd port jumper wire and had pretty good results although I still felt uncertain if the level was right. The temp gun is way way way off to what the temp sensors read. Like at least 10-20 degrees F. I can’t recommend just using that. With the app you can get specific temp readings and know you’re in range. On second check with the app I got a little more fluid out. I’d just get the app and a legit bluetooth obd reader or another temp scanner. The wire jump method and the temp gun are a little tricky so why chance it on a several thousand dollar transmission although they will most likely get you close enough. I think this can be a quick and easy job so long as you don’t get the heat too high because it takes hours to cool down!

Hey man! Awesome content as usual! On newer 4Runners, (21 4Runner SR5 here) can you show us how to place the truck in tranny Fluid level check mode doing the gear shift method from Park to Drive, then rapidly shifting between Neutral Drive , Neutral Drive Etc., until Drive light comes on solid, then back to Park and watching the Drive light behavior while vehicle is in Park. My question is a jumper cable is needed to be inserted in the OBD2 port pins 4 and 13, but my truck doesn’t look to have a 13 pin ? Am I still able to use this method for Fluid Tranny Check mode on 21 4Runner SR5? Thank you!

A potentially easier method to fill the fluid is to snake a tube from the engine bay to the trans fill plug and use a funnel in the engine bay to gravity feed the fluid in

What would be the best diameter for tubing if I were to fill from the top using a funnel? 3/4” or 1” tube will fit in the fill hole?

Hello great videos! I was wondering I happened to hear a knocking noise when you were leveling the oil from the overflow drain, you know the segment when you're talking about the transmission fluid having to be at between 104 degrees and 113 degrees to drain out the proper oil at temp and level off drain , heard a knocking noise in the back ground during engine idle, where was that coming from was just wondering my Toyota 4Runner 2008 has the same noise, and makes that noise has 200,000 thousand miles.
Between you and AMD Car care nut I feel like I can do any maintenance on my Runner! Thank You! Curious what size tires you running?
Same exact as the OEM stock size.
Drain and fill no filter is what is suggested by Toyota and anyone claiming you need a complete flush or even a new filter doesn’t know what they are talking about

Thanks for the instruction. Do you notice any big variance between a thermal gun reading and the scan tool reading? The Car Care Nut mentions to avoid using a thermal gun but it'll be interesting to hear your take to make the job easier for home DIY.
It’s at most 3 degrees off, you can totally use the gr thermal gun. My 1st 4runner is at 190k miles, zero issues. 😎

Hi! With your method of putting in what you took out.. is the truck & ATF back to room temp when draining? Wouldn't the volume of drained warm ATF be different from the same volume of new fluid at room temperature? In other words, old vs new fluids need to be more or less the same temperatures in order to have accurate readings?
Or I'm just realizing now, is that there are 2 parts to the tutorial and that they aren't necessarily always needed to be done together. 1) How to check the ATF level properly. 2) You Method of a Drain and Fill. Thanks!
You don’t cycle the transmission between the gears to get the fluid through them? How come? Do you check the level with YOUR method? Or just fill and go?
So if I measure it and then refill that same amount, do I ever need to get the truck running up to that 104-113 temperature range? Or can I literally just drain and fill without ever turning the truck on?

Great tutorial! Would you recommend flushing the transmission fluid from coolant line by turning the car on and refilling? I have seen other videos when they do it that way they change fluid completely and refill. When I drained fluid, dropped the pan and refilled, then only about 3 qts came. But the entire capacity is about 7 qts.

@VikingsGarage Viking, you are the man! You made the explanation easy and simple. I decided to flush and change the whole transmission fluid. It was 12qts for the entire capacity for 2015 Avalon. Bought the fluid from Toyota. Drained about 3 qts from the pan, cleaned the pan, changed the filter, and torqued everything back again. Flushed about an additional 9 qts from coolant return. Took me some time but enjoyed the process. Now, it is shifting even much smoother.

Recently I noticed om my own 4 runner when idling I could hear the buzzing sound coming from the transmission pan, bell housing area and I was freaking out thinking I had a torque converter or pump going out. I noticed I can hear the same in this video. Is this a normal sound?
There is a pump there, and it will make some noise.it all depends how loud it is.
Great stuff! I bought an '05 V8 4Runner with the A750F. The CarFax showed regular "scheduled service performed" but did not specifically indicate if any transmission fluid service had been done. I'm religious with oil changes and have changed diff and tx case oil but have been afraid to touch the transmission fluid. I'm going to do the drain/measure/fill every other oil change 3 or 4 times then every 30k after that. You mentioned to another high mileage viewer adding "Lucas Transmission Additive". Is this the "Lucas Transmission Fluid Conditioner" or the "Lucas Transmission Fix" product? Also I assume I add a quart of the Lucas in place of one of the replacement OEM fluid quarts?

My local Toyota dealer tells me "we don't recommend draining the transmission fluid as it is a sealed system" and then tells me "but we can do it for $300." my question to you is, with the Viking method of draining and refilling, does the transmission need to be up to temp before driving off or can I just put in gear and go? Also, do I have to change the filter? (I'm aware there is a filter change video.. currently watching. Just wanna know if just doing a drain and refill will hurt anything is all...I don't trust myself with dropping the pan) I just bought this 4runner with 62k on the clock... She's all I got and I don't want to potentially damage anything because I may have skipped a step. I wanna do preventative maintenance such as this to keep it going as long as possible. I just did it on my 2020 4Runner, but I noticed it seemed to be sluggish after. Is this normal? Any reasons to why it might be would help a lot!
Shouldn’t be sluggish, make sure you did put enough trans fluid. Might be a bit low.
I'm not sure if I caught that but how many times should I do it the drain in the field before it's all new fluid every 5,000 mi 3,000 miles Just wondering my car has $110,000 miles on it I already had somebody drop the pan and changed the fluid not a flush, but how many times should I do it
Just do it every 30k miles, you’ll be fine.

There is absolutely never a need to change that filter, the gasket I would change it only when leaking.

Low oil light yes, transmission light only if it starts getting too hot.

I installed an auxiliary transmission cooler and a 180 degree thermostat. A cooler alone wouldn't allow trans temps to get into it's normal operating range during cold weather. Right now I never see trans temps getting over 170 degrees F, even when towing in hot weather. In very cold weather the temps still get into 130 deg range after 20 minutes of driving.
I did this at 20k miles. The fluid was already dark brown. I haven done any towing prior to that.
Thd lifetime fluid (like the dealer service advisor said) is a myth.
It’s not only a myth but a death sentence to your transmission.
Not sure if you cover this in the video, but do you bring the transmission up to running temp before draining the fluid? Or do you drain the trans fluid in cold temp?

I just drained my transmission fluid on my 5th gen 2021 4runner, I had about 3 1/4 quarts come into my bin. What do I do? Fill it up to the amount or am I okay with just filling up with 3 qts of TOYOTA ATF?
Fill it back up with 3 1/4

Thanks @VikingsGarage! Hope this helps someone else confused about the 2.. Did the service on my 17 4Runner last night. And yes A/T Oil Temp 1 was lower than A/T Oil Temp 2 by 5-7 degrees. So once A/T 1 hit 104.0F I went ahead and drained the excess immediately.
I got about 1.2QT of excess out of check plug as I initially drained 3.5 QTs of old fluid (which is more than I see everyone gets) and then added 4.5 QTs of new one just to circulate and refresh old fluid with some more of the new one. Once it came to a trickle I put the check plug back and called it. Both A/T temps evened out and were showing 105.1F at that point
All in all was pretty easy job. Techstream disconnected on me a couple times when I was circulating and warming up the new fluid which was a sketchy momemnt. But then restored just fine.

On the viking way (last step), did you drain the fluid while the engine is cold? Or you have to warm it up?
Either way works, as long as you put back what you took out.
I do it cold, no need to get burned in the process. 👍🏻

I want to do a flush. If I get the gun to check the temperature, do I need to mess with the OBDII PORT? That part confuses me.
My plan:
1. drive the vehicle. level the vehicle, drain transmission fluid.
2. Measure how much oil came out in a jug. Re add that much and a smidge more.
3. Start the car, run it through the gears. Go and check the temp with the gun.
4. Once it reaches 104-113, undo the check bolt till it dribbles out.

Do you know if the temp for the check is the pan temp or convertor? I got a obd reader and app, and im assuming its the pan temp, but does the manual specify?

@@VikingsGarage there are two and they are different temps lol... convertor reaches the check temp before the pan temp and could impact level.
Very doubtful , been doing it this way for years , thousands of fluid changes. Zero issues ever 🤔😉

It is not.
It is Part of the transmission pan.

I will be covering both Diffs and transfer case on a future video, but here’s my answer to your question.
Coolant- 1st flush at 100k then every 50k after that.
Brake fluid- suggest it with every brake job ( but every 50k is ok too)
Diffs and Transfer case - every 60k ( do them all at the same time- front and rear diff + transfer case)

Hey Brother, I change the transmission fluid I put 3 quarts of transmission fluid and let the fluid warmed up to 105 degrees I took off the check drain and not one drop came out.I live in South Florida and it's very hot around here. Do you think maybe needs more fluid?
If no drop came out from the dipstick check drain plug at that temp, then more fluid Is needed until it starts dripping.

When I brought mine to Toyota they disconnected a line in the front of the car and used a transfer machine. Was that right for them to do it like that?
What year is your vehicle?
It sounds like your referring to a transmission power flush, which is not recommended or used on vehicles with WS fluid .
@@VikingsGarage 2010, I specifically asked not to power flush and they said it’s not a power flush it’s a transfer machine lol Starting to think they flushed it.
I don’t know sorry, we are not allowed to have such machines.
Hello Viking, and thanks for all of the great videos. Maybe you have answered this question already... anyway, here are my questions.
Why are you replacing only ~3 qts of transmission fluid when the transmission holds ~12 qts? What about the other ~9 qts of dirty fluid.
Wouldn't you want to do this flush multiple times until the drained fluid looks somewhat fresh and clean?
First question:
The transmission pan when drained it’s only holding about 3 quarts the rest is in the trans lines/torque converter and transmission.
Second question:
WS Toyota ATF is very strong and durable not to mention a little pricey. Do your drain and fill every 60k miles and your good to go. There’s no need to keep pouring your hard earned money down the waste oil bucket. We don’t do a transmission flush that uses that fluid for that reason. It would be a very expensive flush and very much pointless.😉

By doing a ~3 qt replacement for ~3 qts of dirty fluid, you are still leaving ~9 qts of dirty fluid in the transmission. Basically you end up with transmission fluid that is still very dirty and the detergents are mostly used up, especially in a high mileage transmission. You are leaving 3/4 of the contaminates in the transmission.
This would be like draining 1/2 qt of motor oil and adding back 1/2 qt of fresh motor oil... doesn't make sense.
I understand the issue... that it's difficult to replace the fluid in the converter, cooler, lines, etc.
But, wouldn't it make more sense to do your suggested 3 qt transmission fluid replacement multiple times (4 or 5 times), back to back, and of course run the transmission through the gears each time? Sure this is more expensive, but the dirty fluid would be significantly eliminated, and you only have to do this every 60k - 70k miles or so.
If that is what you want to do then do it, I just told you the fluid is very resilient.
I drain and fill mine every other year .

My 2016 Limited has 123k miles and has never had the transmission flushed, what is your recommendation? Some say to not, others say still ok. Please HELP!!!

You should do about 3 drain and fills. Do one, then drive for a day so the fluid mixes. Then do this 2 more times. You won't get it all, but you will get the bulk of it.

@Vikings Garage just followed your procedure boss got 2.5 quarts out of 2019 4runner TRD off road. Fairly warm fluid put back 2.5 quarts room temperature fluid. Hopefully will be good. How much play in the fluid level without damaging transmission?
Your good, 1/2 a quart minus or plus you’ll be fine. 👍🏻
The only problem with this method is you are relying on guessing it had the right amount in the first place. In fact, there are Toyota owners on forums who even report that the factory underfills some of the transmissions. So even the very first fluid change may be a guessing game.

I measure the amount of transmission fluid that comes out of the pan and that is the amount that goes back into it, keep it simple

Unless it was overfilled to begin with like mine was. Got it to 104 and pulled the check plug and at least a quart came out.
Hopefully people aren't doing a complete change and are having a good blend of old/new fluid. This is the ONLY way you should be doing this if you want to get years out of your rig. Too many of these channels having amateurs planning on changing way too often, doesn't matter if your commuting or trailing

Interesting @danielmayeux2251. New to 4Runners. Just got a 2019 TRD PRO with 42K. So, there should never be a full flush and replace the whole 12 qts? I wanted to replace all the fluids for peace of mind. Seems the 4Runner trans fluid is different from others in that all the fluid doesn’t drain. Thanks.

There is over 10 liters of oil in the transmission system, you need to start vehicle, shift through gears, turn off and repeat 4 times to actually change the fluid. Check the color of your transmission oil in a day after you do it your way, you’ll see it’s still black.
Do it right or don’t do it at all, especially when advising people on RUclips

Some bad advice in this video. Temperature guns are NOT a good way to measure transmission fluid temp because the temperature of the fluid can be 7-15 degrees warmer than the pan. Heat transfer is not instant or even quick. Add in the fact that not all temp guns are especially accurate and you create a situation where you may underfill the transmission by a half quart. If you don't have a scanner you just need a wire or paper clip on the OBD2 port to enter into a service mode on the 4runner. I'm sure the procedure has been posted a few times.
As for measuring what you take out. Another bad idea. I've encountered vehicles with slow leaks that were underfilled or were serviced incorrectly in the past. I've also seen where people radically overfilled transmissions!
Just do it the right way and make your life easy. Toyota always tries to find the best and easiest way to service vehicles. If you think you've found a short cut you may want to think twice.
