I used to play this game with my two little brothers. One took his own life a few years ago and nothing brings me back to my sweet childhood more than listening to this. I remember the fights over who gets to play next, and the joy we felt while beating darksol, and dark dragon. I'm in tears right now listening.
I remember the day I beat the game in the back of my mind. It was a nice summer day and I just got back from the pool, and I was more determined than ever to finish this game. My brothers were watching me, cheering me on, while we were all standing up when I put the final blow to dark dragon's skull. It was awesome :D

It was on PC actually, and is how I found it. The "Sega Smash Pack 2" compilation had Shining Force 1 on it, along with other games like Sonic 2, Vectorman 2, and Flicky.
When I was a kid I stole this game from a used toy store because of the artwork. I fell in love with it and have been going back to that used game store for decades, probably spent hundreds in there now as an adult for my daughter, always felt bad but damn what a gem!
I played Shining Force when I was 12, 26 years ago. I STILL have this soundtrack burned into my brain. Especially from 8-11 minutes (the music for battles). It's that good.
I really like this game. The battles are awesome, the storyline is on point, the ending twist would maybe give you a tear in your eye. it's so emotion pulling. It puts you in a happy world, then later you find yourself in a great battle! The bosses are the best, especially Dark Dragon! It's a very good rpg if you ask me.
did have few issues here and there, some woefully imbalanced units such as Bleu , animation, length, and it being an earlier release, the music was not quite clearly optimized, the tunes themselves are great but they sound too bassy, which is a shame, some minor tweaking and would have sounded as good as Sf2
What I love about this game and it's sequel, 2 of my all-time favorite games, is the creativity of the characters! Just in the first one we have... Centaurs, and one with a damn Bazooka! Bird-men warriors, Floating Jellyfish, Raccoon in an up-gradable Iron-Man esque suit, a Ninja, a Samurai, a Monk that can fight, a Dragon, a Cyborg, a badass Werewolf, an old man in a little helicopter pod...then there's multiple magic types, I loved upgrading Tao, Anri and Alex as they all specialized in a particular element, Fire, Ice and Lightning. I love Fire emblem as well but it plays it to safe, too conservative by comparison.
It's a bit late, but you can get a SEGA mega drive which has loads of the popular games from the genesis- including shining force 1 and 2, and a bunch of sonic games. It was made for the ps3, but a 4 or 5 can play it today. Or maybe get a ps3 emulator and see if it has ROMs today!
Brings me back. I'd stop playing every time someone gained a level just to let the battle scene music loop a few times because I loved the track so much.
For some reason in this game, leveling up felt quite rewarding. I'm an all-time RPG guy, but leveling up in this particular game was always amazing. Like, it felt something, there was a difference from being level 4 and 5, and i mean by the stats alone. Damn, i might have to replay it.

I remember when I got my first computer, my dad brought home this CD full of games and this was on it. Shame I never finished the game until I played it years later on the GBA in 2006. This game is probably one of my favorites of all time. Kid Chameleon was also on it. That thing was dope lmao.

I play both, the original and the GBA. Let me tell you that the original is more epic even with bad graphics, the gba one is way more childish, no blood in Kains head after breaking the mask, no evil puns on Darksol and the Dark dragon in the original actually gives you nightmares (i'm 24 years olds and that thing still scares me) but the gba one is cute... Yeah, is really cute. Also more easy than the old one. Remember Khris? that dog girl who can use heal and looks really weak, for some reason is one of the only character who don't have a clon with colors swaps, remember her? Just level up Khris and give her all your rings and buy her the best staff in the current town. She can solo ALL the stages, ALL OF THEM. It's stupid, really stupid that a "healer" can 1 v 1 Dark dragon and actually win. Also, her maid outfits makes that more ridiculous, a blondy dog girl with a broom and a blue maid outfits literally destroying a 3 head dragon of doom. I think that her growth rates are bugged or something, it's like playing in easy mode.

Definitely one of my all-time favorite games. Next to the really emotional sad songs, Battle 3 - (Mid Boss) is my favorite track. The urgency and high speed tempo just gets me going. :) The remake on GBA is pretty awesome too, especially for the revamped script and rebalanced character growth.
Im halfway through darkness right now, in my shining playthrough. It's been such a long time, brings back so many memories. I can't wait to start shining force next!

For some reason the music that plays when Simone is on the screen, it makes me think of a lullaby someone is singing to thier kid. It even sounds like a real song I heard before but i can't seem to place it....
Still own my original Genesis and both carts. I modified both carts with larger batteries so my save files wouldn't die. With my current setup they should remain good for like 25 years or something. Assuming the batteries don't decompose or leak! However there's always the chance of a cosmic ray corrupting the SRAM. Also, anyone saying these 2 games suck can go fuck themselves. These are incredible games that I can STILL play 25 years later. I was so young the first time I beat Shining Force II I cried like a baby and actually missed a bunch of stuff that happened, lol. I remember being SO angry and frustrated trying to beat Zeon because I had no idea what strategy was.

Yeah, that's tricky. You don't want to take that class promotion immediately for most of the characters, you want to level way up for most of them and then take it if you do. I got burned by it too...
