5. The encampment
STORYLINE:
A pro-Palestinian encampment at the center of the University of Michigan’s campus in Ann Arbor had grown Tuesday to nearly 40 tents and more than 100 people.
Organizers pledged to remain inside what has been labeled the “Liberated Zone” until the university divests from companies that the students say are profiting from Israel’s war in Gaza.
Within the encampment, some students were busy preparing for finals week with their laptops and textbooks. Others participated in a drum circle that included chants such as “Regents, regents, you can’t hide! You are funding genocide!”
Many of the students wore masks and refused to identify themselves, saying they feared retribution from the university or law enforcement.
University of Michigan student Leo Auerbach stopped to observe the encampment on his way to class.
While the differing stances on the war hadn’t led to Auerbach feeling unsafe on campus, he said he has become fearful of “seeing hate speech and pretty violent rhetoric being normalized at all levels.”
