  • Nobel Prize Laureate Joseph Stiglitz is one of the most influential economists in the world, having advised multiple Democratic Presidents of the US and the World Bank, where he worked as Chief Economist and senior Vice President.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
    His latest book, called “The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society,” argues that the economic right’s concept of “freedom” doesn’t take into account the necessary trade-offs, that one person’s freedom often comes at the expense of another’s. And that “free” - unregulated - markets, far from promoting growth and enterprise, in fact lessen economic opportunities for majorities and syphon wealth from the many to the few.
    Stiglitz, now 81, is a Professor at Columbia University in New York, where freedom of speech and the right to protest have been making headlines in recent weeks, with hundreds of pro-Palestinian student protesters occupying the campus and clashing with police. The movement has now spread from the US, and encampments around the world are being launched, where the common demand is asking universities to divest and disclose their financial support of the war in Gaza.
    In this episode of Ways to Change the World, economist Joseph Stiglitz tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy why more government intervention is desirable, whether campus protests in the US are going “over the line” and why stalling living standards “create a fertile field” for demagogues like Donald Trump.
    Produced by Shaheen Sattar and Silvia Maresca

      @@haarissultan8866 My point is that people are commenting on videos without viewing them. My other point (since we're on the subject) is that just over 100 years ago the Ottoman Caliplhate entered World War I (when they didn't even have to) and declared Jihad on the British Empire. It turned out that their powerful German and Austrian friends couldn't prevent General Allenby from literally walking into Jerusalem, nor prevent Istanbul from being occupied by Britain for 5 full years. After a complete military defeat of the Caliphate, Britain administered what was called the British Mandate for Palestine and when it left, it looked favourably on the establishment of a Jewish state in parts of that territory. If someone (of an Islamist persuasion) doesn't like it, they can (1.) learn to deal with it, or (2.) fight another Jihad, but this time without the Germans, Austrians, Hungarians or the Bulgarians fighting on their side [shocking note: no Americans even involved!] -- they can look up the Third Battle of Gaza and the Battle of Jerusalem to see how it worked out for them the last time (or just shuut oop).

    Freedom: you have to look at it from class perspective within society, for example slaves as one class and the owner as another. So when slaves talked about Freedom they meant end of slavery as a system economically and for that to happen organisation needed, fight needed so that this means political fight. One class wants to be free (freedom) from economic exploitation by the ruling class. President Biden defined Freedom as "free competition between companies" but majority of people on this planet do not have company so their Freedom doesn't apply to 99% of people. So they define Freedom from their own perspective, ruling class perspective, their own political and economical interests

    This guy seems confused. He understands the democrats are also neo libs, I assume, as are most mainstream western political parties. He was also pretty significant in cementing the ideology into the status quo as a member of Clinton’s team. Difficult to get a read on him.
    I thought this was a mea culpa and form of penance for the damage he has caused… but then he starts spouting democrat propaganda on behalf of a geriatric neo liberal.
    Difficult to take him seriously.

    • @keep-ukraine-free528
      @keep-ukraine-free528 19 дней назад

      @ligerdave He absolutely did not say that. He realises China's economy & economic policies are a hodge-podge approach, taking some parts of capitalism and other aspects of communism. It takes some things too far, and others not far enough, so the Chinese system is also broken in ways. Consider the many "ghost cities" throughout China, her government's clamp over Baidu, the green revolution actually causing more pollution (of heavy metals, industrial chemicals) into rivers. Cancer rates are rising, and middle class Chinese are trying to leave.

    • @ligerdave

      @@keep-ukraine-free528 relax. it was just a jk. However, your arguments kinda make nonsense. for instance, you pointed out that the Green Revolution is causing more pollution. it's like saying the industry revolutions are totally a disaster coz they caused more pollution and slavery. you can always point out negative aspects of a nation and turn a blind eye on the improvements they have made. Prof. Stiglitz, on the other hand, focused too much on the improvements but ignored the trade-offs. you know everything is about trade off right? he's an economist and that's his trade.

If the Palestinians come to their senses to elect moderate leadership instead of leadership that feeds people false dreams then maybe the the hope to a start to reconciliation. Thank you for the insight, however, a big government intervention through progressive capitalism is far worse than relying on a free market to solve social issues. Government goods and services will create an unfair advantage, corruption and limit innovation brought through competition. Communities will become dependent on the government for every aspect of their lives with the new social programs creating an environment of inequality of opportunities due to high taxes and strict regulations.
