    Thanks to Mr. Justin Lyons I just found out that even without the Alexa you can use some offline voice commands without any internet access. The command is " OK Garmin" and you can use it for some simple commands like on the older Garmin devices we used to say " Voice Command"

Garmin should be paying you to do this video .. just sold me on this model , ( darn shame they dont make a siri model ) my old garmin drive 60 went belly up after 3yrs of daily use.. 200,000k miles driven .. been using my cell phone and waze this week . if you drive a lot, cell and waze just dont get it ! Hi. Thanks for the great video. Two questions. Can you charge the gps with the mini USB cable and does it have a function where you can use off line maps when you have no service

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  3 года назад +2

      Hi, no problem, and yes you can use the maps offline with no satellite signals, however you can only brows the maps and zoom in to them manually your location on the map will not change as you walk or drive. The GPS will only show your location at where you last time had satellite signals. Yes you can power the GPS through a computer or car USB Port only if you use a special cable like this www.ebay.com/itm/333716621477 otherwise the computer will go in to PC SYNC mode which will be unusable for navigation, map or app access.

      Hi, I have a 120 to 12 volt charger that I plug a GPS into that needs charging. When I replace a battery in one, I just plug it into this charger and let it charge up, overnight. I also use it to charge the internal battery of any GPS unit that need charging. These chargers are cheap on eBay - about $7 with free shipping. A USB cable will not charge them. I use a standard Garmin power cable, even on traffic models. I just turn them off and let them charge. The battery will charge in the off position. The problem with cars, today, is they have switched power outlets, meaning power outlets are on only when the engine is running. That sucks. My old Mountaineer has a power outlet that is on all the time but running a GPS on it will run down the battery., as I found out. In my .CRV it has two power outlets but both are switched. This is why I have a 12 volt outlet that I plug into a buss bar in my office.

    Thanks for this very useful tutorial. I have a question about destination address search. Does Garmin drivesmart 65 allows zip code entry to narrow down the address search? I have an old GPS (I think LM 40) which has this feature and I find it extremely helpful. Thanks.

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 года назад +2

      You are very welcome, and about your question, the answer is unfortunately NO. The older Garmin units could do that but they discontinued that feature on the newer ones. I called Garmin to ask them why, and I was told that the Post Office is constantly changing the Zip Codes as new developments are rising and that was causing major issues to the Navigation Devices.

    This video has just convinced my to get another Tomtom

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 года назад

      Yes Garmin GPS is much different than TomTom, for some it's more complicated whereas for others it's better since it is much more customization capabilities. For example, with Garmin you can use third-party opensource maps which are free, water charts for sea navigation, land maps for hiking and camping, and Air maps for pilots. Also, there are more than a dozen PC-based applications for route planning, trip planning, and flight mapping. In short, TomTom is like a Mac, and Garmin is like a PC, so both have their own targetted consumers.

    I liked your presentation of this device. I have just bought the similar Drive 65 without Alexa. Your video helped me a lot with setup. Do you know if there is any way to disable the split screen that happens as you near highway exits and maybe other things? At first I thought it was Auto Zoom, but disabling that did not do it. Thank you for your help. I found by accident that the Garmin setting regarding "Environmental Zones" is not actually for avoiding polluted areas. It is for avoiding these designated "low emission zones" where you must purchase and display "Emission Stickers". You have been to Europe, and I assume Germany, where you will have seen the stickers talked about on this page: www.germanemissionssticker.com/
      Garmin's manual states:
      Avoiding Environmental Zones
      Your device can avoid areas with environmental or emissions restrictions that may apply to your vehicle.
      I have found nothing about disabling the split view. I think, like you, that it can't be disabled, but I will call Garmin.

I do have two questions- If the unit is pugged in and you shut the car off will the gps also shut down? and likewise if you turn the car back on with the unit still plugged in will it automatically turn on or will you need to push the power butten to get it back on again?

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 года назад +1

      No problem, so that depends on the type of car you drive. In some cars as you turn the ignition key to off position the vehicle will cut off the power from the Cigarette Lighter port. However there are also cars that will always have power on the cigarette lighter port even when the vehicle is OFF. So on such cars you have to get Garmin's hard wire car kit and wire it to a switched power source in your car.

How can I then hear the audio coming from the GPS (commands and Alexa replies, music, etc). Can I have a phone linked to the GPS via bluetooth, and at the same time, have the GPS paired with one of those FM transmitters so I can hear the audio through the car audio? Maybe there is an obvious solution I haven't seen it or I am overthinking it, haha.

      @@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thanks for the help! If anyone is in the same situation, the web doesn't explain much, but the manual confirms that you can have the phone connected and still use Bluetooth to connect to the car stereo ( directly or FM transmitter) or with an aux cable. Do take into account that the aux is in the cigarette lighter charger, because for old cars that have no aux, installing an aux without changing the stereo means putting an adapter in the glovebox. So the cabling will be tricky / ugly. I will try first with an FM transmitter and if I like the GPS, look for a more permanent cabling solution, hiding charging adapter, aux cable behind the dash.

    great video,,,did I miss this feature ? on my older unit , if I set a route and some how missed a turn , it would verbally notify me with " RECALCULATING " and make me aware of a route change . This new 65 does NOT. I would NOT know I even made a change in my route...

      That is very true, on the newer Garmin Devices, the rout change will happen automatically without notification. There are some additional advanced settings when you press and hold the upper right corner of the Volume Control Screen which may allow you to enable that feature.

    Nice review!
    Guys, I have one issue that bothers me with this Garmin since I bought it. If I set the route within Trip Planner, start to drive and make a pause, the GPS cancels the route as if I never started it! I'm forced to do all the steps again or to load a previously saved route. It drives me nuts!
    It's pretty weird because my other GPS, Garmin nuvi 2797, works completely different and as it meant to - if I turn off the car for a break, it retains the route after I continue to drive.
    I can't see any options that should fix the issue. Any thoughts or suggestions? It's updated numerous times, but the issue is there.

      Try saving the trip then you can simply go back to your saved trips to continue. Also see if you have the option of the Garmin not shutting down when you turn off the Car. I want to buy a gift to my father and I am thinking about this Garmin Drivesmart 65 with Alexa, so my first question is this: Can Alexa in this device speak spanish? You know... Alexa sometimes can speak english only in some of these smart devices and they are blocked by geolocation when it comes to Alexa... so my second question is: Do you know if this Garmin Drivesmart 65 can work inside of Costa Rica? @@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 thank you so much for your answers!!!. You know, for example, we have some Fire HD 10 Tablets which they are manufactured by Amazon and Alexa in those tablets speak english only, no spanish (in none of them). We contacted Amazon Customer Support to check this and they told us that indeed in some devices Alexa can speak only English, although in Echo devices can be available more languages than English. Our Echo Frames, Echo Dots, Echo Shows, Samsung TVs, Yamaha Sound Bar, etc. all of them speak spanish with no issues, but for this I have been selecting each device carefully before buying it. That's why I would like to be 100% sure that Alexa in the Phone Settings (in the Alexa App) can be configured in Spanish. I can buy and wait to return the device just in case it does not come with Spanish enabled. However, I would love to buy it so that my father can use it immediately, without so much waiting. 3. So I can use the live traffic cable.
    4. The cig lighter cable that comes with the 61, has a built in traffic receive, it updates traffic very often. So doesn’t need to accurate to nearest minuet.
    5. Other charging cables don’t have the built in traffic receiver so don’t update live traffic. I’m not sure you can link it with your phone to get live traffic that way. Even if it does I’m not sure which is faster to update traffic faster.

      Yes this will turn ON/OFF automatically when the vehicle is turned ON and OFF. You need to get the maps for South America, then you will need to un-check the box next to the North America Maps. You do that by going to settings, My maps

    Hi, does it avoid low clearance bridges for semi trucks?

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 года назад

      Hi, unfortunately it does not, for that you need a Truck Specific Garmin GPS such as Garmin Dezl 750, or any Garmin Dezl model.

    If anyone knows, please let me know at the Garmin settings at Navigation /Avoidances, what does avoiding "Car-share Lanes" mean ?? What avoids, what prohibits, this option ??

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 года назад +1

      Car Share Lanes is another name for Carpool lane or HOV lane. This lane is for vehicles with two or more occupants only.

      @argentus5483 2 года назад +1

      @@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Ok, so it's a special lane, it's not for my 4x4 car. Then I will keep this option activated. Thank you very much, I have never encountered such a lane of traffic so far.

    Do you plug the aux in to the car and the sat nav or the phone and the sat nav ?

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  3 года назад +1

      The AUX is actually AUX-OUT which means you connect it to your Car Radio's AUX-IN to get the sound of the GPS from the large speakers of the car. It will also give you the sound of any phone call through the car speaker if your phone is connected to the GPS via Bluetooth.

    Hi,m and thx for this great video, as customer attention at Garmin is either useless or non existing.
    I am suscribed to the radars yearly service, but I can´t see nothing related to radars in the GPS interfaces. Any tips? Thx in advance!
    PS: and I cant find anywhere how to update the firmware in case there are updates. Garmin just replied that they have no updates, and that is it :(

      Greetings. The Garmin's Speed Radar and Red Light Camera field are at " PROXIMITY ALERTS" then click on " ALERT TYPES" then click on Garmin Safety Cameras.
      The update for this is under the name of Garmin Cyclops, and you can read more about it here www.garmin.com/en-US/safety-alerts/

      For Weight Station you must have a Garmin Dezl which is designed for Trucks. However you could add POI ( Points of Interests) of all the Weight station in your area and add it to the POI folder in your Garmin.

    My vehicle has heated and solar reflective windshield. Can barely locate satellites. I called garmin about an external antenna option. They said “only for Nuvi models, so we have no options for drive smarts”. Do you know of any?’

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  4 дня назад

      I don't know of any for the DriveSmart, however a Solar Reflective Windshield should not stop the GPS signals. The GPS navigation frequency is above 1227.60HMz maxing at 1575.42MHz no glass coating can stop it unless it has metal coating.

    , and I just want to know if the traffic, with the smartphone app Drive is better than the App Link, is better or it's just same one (differences between Ds65 and Ds61) thanks for All, have a nice day, Cordially Yours, Sébastien from France 😊

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 года назад +1

      The one by the Smartphone requires cellular signal and data rates will apply but the traffic info on it is OK not perfect. The one with the FM Receiver does not require cellular signal and there are no data charges, however the traffic info on it is only accurate if the Traffic Receiver Cable is a HD version. For example a Garmin GTM60 is just as good as a Smarphone Traffic, but the Garmin GTM25, GTM26, GTM35, GTM36 are all analog receivers with minutes of delay in their traffic data. None of the above including the Smartphone Traffic is real-time and they all have some delay.
