This was great. However, i think there maybe a camera and lens weight limit in order to be able to do this successfully. I tried this with my D850 and 16-35 mm lens which is a pretty heavy combo and no luck getting it to turn beyond 90º either left or right before it stopped and began freaking out. I'll try it with a D7200 and 35 mm and see if i have better luck with a lighter camera/lens set up. Thanks for your time putting this together for us, much appreciated.
Yep, Me too with an A7III and the 90mm macro. Tried the lighter Tamron 28-75 and it would although it seems to turn and then go off line?
@@ekphotography I tried with my D7200 and 35 mm and it worked. Mine didn't go offline though
Same goes for my setup, Canon 80D + 17-50 mm lens seems to be too heavy for the Ronin. However the setup from Josh in the video doesn't seem that light at all. Could it really be that the Ronin can't handle this?
Precision absolutists will take note that the roll isn't perfect unless the gimbal corresponds to the center of the lens, achieving a perfect rotation. If the perspective of the len's center isn't given consideration, the lens instead does an ellipse, the center of the frame will be off, and those with the proper eyes will notice the inconsistency. I guess this is what makes Wally Pfister and us different! This is also why serious composers will respect and not take this maneuver for granted.
I tried this roll feature and the Ronin S freaked out!!! I did a balance test prior and it passed. What gives? I see the max for roll is 30 and 30 degrees??? Please help.

The shot is really nice! But I was trying this functionality on my SC+xt4 and realize it was not a good idea to use dslr and hybrid camera because they are usually unbalanced, causing the focal center to be out centered with the gimbal roll and will allowing some interesting shot you will never be able to have a perfect spin like those seen in cinema... Pretty cool tho

Nice work, Josh. Just as an addendum, according to DJI when you're in the Control Settings, both CH1 and CH2 are set to N/A. I don't know if it will make that much of a difference, but I always like to follow the manufacturer suggestions. That way if something goes wrong, you can blame them. LOL.

Quick question, is the pivot point of the rotation in the center of the lens or somewhere else? I can really tell from watching the video.
Like if I were to slap it on a C-stand and rotate it, would it stay centered? Or does it rotate around a point other than the center of the lens?

Try decreasing the maximum speed in the app. Might be a little late, sorry about that.
My gimbal just starters when I try that move, and I only have GH5 on it with 12-35 lens so I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or not. It makes the noise and bumps on itself and then makes this continuous noice and vibrates that tells me something is wrong. I don’t want to kill the motor but I also want to learn this move.
Wouldnt you be able to do the car shot by handing off the gimbal, neither of you touch the joystick and a third person controls the roll using the app?
I just got a Ronin S and there seems to be an update in the app that allows u to do this by toggling one button now

I did what you said, then the gimbal rolled the camera a bit and it started freaking out slamming my lens to the gimbal.... Thank God nothing happend... Kinda scary though, I don't know i tried it again but same result. What am I doing wrong??

I wonder if Zhiyun could enable this feature in Crane 2. Doesn't seem to be a particularly hard software engineering task if the motors are strong enough
you CAN do it on the crane 2 ... just mount the camera onto the gimbal at 90 degrees angle . instead of it facing forward it faces sideways this then allows for the same shot . also works on the V2 and original crane

Just disable the tilt in the settings like you did with the pan.

Nvm I found out what i was doing wrong... I didnt switch channel 3 to Roll.. I changed 2 but 3 is specifically for the Roll as you said.
just a FYI the new update has a switch for this and dont need to fiddle

@Terrence Credlin I fixed it. All u need to do is make sure your roll is perfectly balanced. Sometimes it says in the ronin app that the balance is excellent when it's not. Look on RUclips for how to balance roll on the ronin

I have a sony A7ii and something in the setting won't let the camera go upside down. everything in the viewfinder stays rightsize up. any thoughts on what setting it is to turn off?
