On day 3 of post op and thankfully got a little break in extreme pain. I haven’t pooped yet but I’m sure that will change my pain levels once it happens. Tomorrow will be two weeks PO. This pain is NO JOKE. I do NOT recommend this surgery unless you NEED it! The anxiety and just low dark mood that came along with the pain and needing to poop was indescribable. I didn’t leave my house until 10 days PO for a little bit and haven’t left again since. This week I’m going to push myself into a more “normal “ routine and see if I can trick myself into feeling better. Be prepared to not be able to do any normal activity for at least two weeks if not more. I took a third week off but will take a fourth if needed. Good luck to you all! I keep telling myself this will end! 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I had this awful surgery 18 months ago. The first week I thought I was going to die, the second week I wanted to die, the third week I was downright miserable. The fourth week, I saw some daylight. I couldn't take pain pills because they make me very constipated, which defeated their purpose. It took over a year before I could hold a bowel movement long enough to find a toilet. In the end, it was worth the surgery, but it was extraordinarily uncomfortable for several months.

I wanted to die. And to boot my insurance required confirmation for whatever reason. I was numb when I left and I almost cried when I thought I was going to go without. I told the pharmacist if you couldn’t get the doctor, I’d pay cash or play Russian roulette with the drug dealer down the street. Not kidding. And thankfully it was filled for a few days. I probably shouldn’t have said the dealer bit in hindsight, they could have refused me altogether but I was starting to hurt.

Post surgery when the anesthesia is gone i spent the whole night in excruciating pain and didn't expect that. Now, a week from surgery i am getting better but toilet sitting is nightmare still. A glass container with a little DMSO; add aloe gel if you like; add comfrey oil as main ingredient so it’s about 3x amount of what you used for DMSO & aloe gel.
Dab it with a cotton ball & apply to your source of pain.
You should feel a relaxation response.
Look more into DMSO & comfrey.
Can’t be near plastic or chemicals as it drives anything it touches into the bloodstream. But it’s an old anti inflammatory & relaxant.
Comfrey heals tissues & fractured bones.

I have fissurecomy, sphincterotomy, and hemommhorectomy at the same time since I suffered from chronic anal fissures for a year in a half before they did the surgery. Which were caused by chronic constipation. I have a motility issue that no one can fix or even understand why it is happening. The constipation even caused a rectocele. It was an awful surgery to recover from. I had no idea it was going to be so bad. Taking stool softeners, keeping up with Tylenol and Advil each one every couple of hours and the hot baths really helped. Could not take stronger pain meds because of the constipation issues. I added benefiber to my diet and kept my diet very light while recovering. Be prepared for recovering to take six to eight weeks

Had my hemorrhoidectomy Feb 17th 2022, when I was waking up from anesthesia I felt pain, the nurse gave me 1 oxycodone 325mg, since then I didn't feel any pain, I've felt discomfort at times, specially going to the bathroom which I did every day since the surgery, after day 4 I felt allot better. I've been resting most of the time, I do go for a short walk everyday, my diet is chicken soup in the blender and 4 quarts of water per day, I also drink a glass of water with one spoon of miralax once a day. today is day 11 my plan is to keep this diet for 21 days. I hope this helps, I discontinued the Opioids on day 2 and Tylenol on day 5, It doesn't hurt.

The only major pain I have now is after bowel movements due to spasm, but today i went from toilet (after cleaning) straight into a really hot bath with a kilo of sea salt and some lavender stuff in it and it made a MASSIVE difference. I think i need to start moving around more too. Today was the first day I left the house and felt much better for it. Will all be worth it in the end!

@@markthemedic @Monica Just read your post to my fiancé, she's a neurosurgeon, She believes the diet has allot to do with the recovery, I have not eating anything other then 2 coffee mugs of liquified soup a day, 4 quarts of water and for desert apple sauce and apple juice.. nothing else.. going to the bathroom once a day, no pain at all no spasm, I do the sitz bath 3x a day once after #2. I walk around the block once a day and the rest of the time I stay in bed watching TV...... My doctor prescribed an ointment (compound) that I apply to the area about 6 - 8 times a day, it helps with the burning....

Day 4 for me.... I've been experiencing the spasms for 2 days now. The pain is a little traumatizing. I'm not at all excited about going to the bathroom. But, I have noticed that I have a little more control now. It's not like that first four or five times going to the bathroom where your bottom bits just explode uncontrollably.
The sits baths help tremendously and the longer you let your body relax in the water as hot as you can tolerate it the better off you are.
If you have ibs though, it's an unrelenting cycle because you'll surely go more than the average person and your body will likely be much more tense so be kind to yourself... stool softeners are your friend and so is hydration... specifically orange juice and maybe powerade and plenty of soft foods and even so gas relief pills...

I described this as the immovable object meeting the irresistible force. At some point, your sphincter is gonna give. And it is “pass out painful”. Mine was severe for almost 10 days. Now, 4 weeks post-op, it still hurts. But nothing like it was that first 10 days. And, thankfully, it was a fairly sharp drop off in pain. So know that it will get better.
I think patients should be instructed to drink bone broth and eat no food for 2 days before surgery. It should minimize the bulk of fecal material you’re going to have after surgery. Post-op, I continued the bone broth, and added yogurt w miralax mixed in with it. I didn’t eat real food for over 2 weeks, and only small amounts, and I’ve still eaten yogurt w miralax every day. I’ll be ecstatic once I finally have no discomfort w a BM.

I had an attempted hemmoroidectamy done on me tonight as of this comment by a general GP. I asked the doc to do a rubber band ligation but insisted on doing a hemmoroidectamy right there in the clinic. He used a numbing cream initially, waited 10 minutes then tried injecting lidocaine chloride into my anus. The pain was so intense that I screamed in agony and drooled all over. He tried twice and gave up saying that it was better if I had it done at the hospital. My hemmoroid has now went from the size of a pea to the size of a large marble and is giving me excrutiating crippling pain that was even worse than having the hemmeroids pre procedure. I was not knocked out and I even tried to divert the pain by inflicting pain somewhere else but it was no use.

Worst five days of my life. Starting the second day after hemorrhoidectomy. Anal sphyinter spasms, every hour, all day, and part of the night, for five days in a row. Cramping and bleeding once every hour, over and over, relentlessly. Finally ended up in the ER and second surgery the next morning.

Omg I was not instructed properly to start laxatives after the surgery and was told I might not open the bowel for 3 days so I didn't take any laxatives for the first three days. Biggest mistake I made. I had the worst pain on first bowel movement after surgery because I was taking strong painkillers but not laxatives. I am grateful to Dr. Chung who advised in his one video to sit in a warm water tub and poop in that if nothing else helps. I had to use this method many times. Sounds disgusting but it doesn't matter if this makes things easier for you.

I think for a lot of people that if they have it around in September like I did of this year I think a lot of you should be closer to feeling more fine during Thanksgiving and definitely feel better around Christmas cuz you probably should be fully recovered by then but I think when a doctor actually sees you that did the surgery after a certain point will end up doing something that's similar to a scope and see if you fully recovered if they show pictures from when you were in pain and show you video clips of you not being in pain anymore of recent videos showing that everything is all healed up you should eventually be able to take a dump and say much better one day hopefully you guys will be able to say that but at least you won't have to worry about hemorrhoids anymore once your butts fully recovered because even my Aunt Sharon had it done hemorrhoid surgery and a few years later I had it which was the September 2 days before my birthday which made my birthday Shirley want a joy because I really couldn't call it much for a birthday more like pain day I mean I like all the stuff I got but I kind of sucks that it's kind of hard to enjoy it when I hurt so much when it comes to playing my birthday games I got for my switch and my birthday games I got for my series X but getting back to the point probably be better off asking your doctor for suggestions of how to make your dump a little more closer to maybe liquid soap it might be easier to tolerate when you go just make sure the method they choose is done in a way that doesn't cause you to take an accident in your pants you certainly don't want that and you don't want an accident when you sleep either

They kept me for 5 days and put me under the strong pain killers, only able to do bm 5days after with Enema. My surgeon said it’s okay to not have bm for few days after the surgery. On day 4 i ended in ER bc of t the pain was too much (I was screaming of pain). My process now is after pooping 5 min later I have huge pain, thus I go and take a 🛁 to relax. I am going on 14 day post operation and the pain has decrease but the worst problem is the bump or skin tag about in finger size and doesn't seems like getting shrink, sitz bath and creams were the daily routine but the size is not going down. My greatest relieve came after the first poo is by using ice pack and right after pooping just go straight to sitz bath, that made me taking a very less painkiller tablet, i took milk of magnesia for the soft stool along with metronidazol for avoiding diarrhea. My only concerns is whether the skin tag will shrink after two months, if not am afraid for another surgery😅😅😅

    Hello Dr. Chung,
I had the surgery around 4 days ago and i barely slept since then because of these spasms. The problem here is i get these spasms directly like 1 second before i start falling asleep so it’s almost impossible to relax my body and sleep. (Maybe it’s caused by the general anesthesia i received).
I understand u said the best solution is taking pain killers but i’m already taking these and it didn’t rlly help much.
Also my surgeon literally said that there is no such thing as anal spasm and he never heard about it and i’m just overreacting and being too sensitive. (He even got mad when i insisted that i’m feeling these)
So can you give me any advice, how to stop these spasms from happening so i can just have some sleep?!

      Sitz baths all day 15 mins at a time;
Use the big couch pillow and lay on you stomach and just sway from side to side to get your body to relax and rest as much as possible

Hi Dr. Chung, thanks for sharing this with us. I’m 5 days post ops internal lateral sphincterotomy. I’m not sure if this is same as the anus spasm, but especially at night while laying down, I clench my butthole involuntarily. This happens especially when I’m anxious about the pain or anticipating the butthole clenching. It gives a shooting pain temporarily which goes away in some time. However, this keeps on happening multiple times throughout the night. I’m petrified that this will give me skin tags or intrude with the healing of the fissure

I am in my 2nd day after operation with laser and RF and the pain and the anal spasms are excruciating!
I can only sleep about 2-4 hours max and this with zero quality. I had broken my arm last year and the pain of the broken bone was more bearable.
If someone doesn't absolutely need piles hemorrhoid surgery just don't do it!
For the after-surgery anal mucus and liquids that coming from the butt i use adult incontinence diaper, i wash 3 times a day, I am taking Mineral oil to soften the stool, i am taking Daflon pills, i put 2 different anal creams, i am receiving 3 times a day pain killer and i eat soft foods like soups, yogurt.
The doctor gave me 15 days off work but i think i would need more to de-escalate this hell.
    Update:
Now i am 14 days after operation and things are much better now. The key point was the 10th day that i saw a major improvement, the anal spasms finally stopped, the pain escalate and i finally stopped the painkillers.
I still use stool softeners, baby wipes and i wash my butt immediately after the toilet with lukewarm water and neutral baby soap.
The anal fluids are almost gone, the function of my anus has almost return to normal but i still use adult incontinence diapers just to be sure.
It is still painful when you go to the toilet, but is tolerable
I still use the anal cream and i am taking Daflon pills (doctor said to use the medicines 20-30 days in total)

I had my surgery on Monday (4 April). I am not sure if I had the spasms but I can say that I have to push to get poop out which is a nightmare. My biggest fear is that my haemorrhoid was 4 cm big. So I have a large cut out in me that has left me completely debilitated meaning my recovery is gonna be between 6-8 weeks at least. I have a question: Last night (08 April) I awoke with a serious pressure just above my stomach after I fought diligently with a bowel movement. However, into the BM, I could not hold my body up anymore. I felt weak and was close to fainting. This weak and faintly feel only subsided when I laid again in bed but upon waking and getting up to pee, I nearly fainted and had to be supported physically by my wife. My doctor said it could be the pain killers or the fact that my food intake is at a minimal. Is this a common symptom and have anyone else experience this. At the moment I feel better, but the pressure is still there.

My surgery was also on 4 April. I didn't begin having pain or spasms until day 4. Day 6, yesterday was the worse. Today Day 7 has been better. I Had my actual first BM in the bathtub. I've found that being on all fours and sitting in the squat helped. I sit in hot/warm water for hours, pretty much every day. I have not returned to a regular diet; however, I drink tons of water and added stool softer to my routine. The most painful is the spasms as the BM comes out. The softer the stool, the easier it is to manage the pain.

You can push it back in. I would advise seeing a specialist for education and a discussion on options.

It's been 4 months since THD surgery but I am still suffering from a closed inner sphincter. I'm currently taking nifedipine. Will I ever recover?

I'm sorry you're going through that! You will need to speak with your surgeon to make sure your recovery goes well.
