Nice machete. I just did this to my Jeep Cherokee Classic '06 and I couldn't have done it without this video. I ended up removing the other end of the pitman arm because I didn't have a puller on hand and my jeep has a brace that makes getting to that bolt difficult. Also, removing the air filter box makes getting to the hoses and the steering linkage a lot easier. My bolt was facing up on the linkage. I saved $350 because of this video. Thanks.
Ive never had any real problems with the stock box but many people have said they like the upgrade. As for me I just tapped mine and will do a hydro assist soon.
I got a Dodge Ram 3500 quad cab with duellies but the setup was exactly the same. I gotta say bud, you are a life saver. I've been fighting with some old school tools but it looks like I had things pretty well right. Just need to upgrade on some stuff to get the job done. Thanks much bub
Very informative video, my jeep cherokee's steering gear box fell out when i was pulling out of the parking lot, the bolts that hold it in place somehow snapped, thanks for the video!
Awesome video Matt. Anyone that owns a Cherokee that does their own work would appreciate any of your videos. I have leaky seals so this will help me a bunch when I do the job. I was very surprised to find the rebuild video. Your friend Matt is quite knowledgeable with attention to detail.
Matt: Replacing steering box on 2000 cherokee. The triangular mounting bracket is broken. Do you have a part number and where it can be obtained. Your videos are great.
Generally I like to hit the pressure washer first, makes it a little less unpleasant to work on. ;) I wish my power steering box bolts came out that easy. I had to heat up the nuts/nutserts/whatever they're called between red and white hot and hit the bolts with the impact to get them out. That was after I learned the hard way on one of them that you DO NOT want snap them off and try to drill them out. Oh, mine is a CJ, so it's a bit different, no aluminum to worry about melting. ;)
Good suggestion, disconnecting power steering hoses at the P/S pump! I didn't do that and put a nick in the o-ring on the high pressure hose while struggling to get it connected to the steering box. Initially it worked fine, but a few blocks from the house I lost all my power steering fluid!
Hey Matt..! Awesome channel.. Question.. Would a bad steering box cause a xj to wonder when driving at highway speed.. Everything in the steering system is new.. Thanks..!
Good advice. I'll be working on the steering box on my CJ this summer, so I will keep that in mind. On the surface, the CJ job looks a lot simpler than this, here's hoping!
Good afternoon, very good video...thanks for making it. I am rebuilding a Saginaw power steering gear box with a large 76 embossed on it. I was told it was for my 1977 Jeep CJ 7 with a V8. My question is that upon disassembly I only have 22 ball bearings. I did a bit of research and some folks are saying that International boxes used 22 bearings, but do you have any knowledge on this? The 76 stamping on the case I believe is correct for my CJ 7.
Thanks for the video. I replaced my gear and am having trouble getting the pitman arn on the new gear. Using a breaker bar to tighten the nut, arm will only go on halfway on the new gear spline. Hammering the arm doesn't help. Any suggestions?
can you do a video on common spare parts that you should carry even for someone who doesn't offroad? I carry a small tool box in my jeep always with all tools that can repair anything easy on the jeep. But I'd like to see what all spare parts you would carry around that can save you money and possibly a tow bill.
Should I be able to turn the input shaft on a new box about 3 inches before the output shaft starts to turn? Its a new box, and I've also tried tightening it to no avail. Should I return and get another box? Everything under the hood is new, no play and 2 alignments.
I am replacing my sons steering box. He hit an immovable object, which damaged the steering box. So now, the steering wheel is 180 degrees off (basically upside down when the wheels are straight). My question is this: Before I replace the box, do I put the steering wheel straight or the wheels? Any advice would be super helpful. Thanks Tom
Thanks so much Matt! all your videos are great, I've replaced/adjusted all kinds of stuff, learned so much and saved lots of $ with your help! Tomorrow, I'll tackle this.. I'll just watch it backwards to put the new box in ;)
Matt, I don't know if my steering box is good or bad. I recently picked up a 99 XJ with 221 miles on it. It likes to wonder in the lane on the highway. No noises, shakes, clunks, etc. but I have a dead spot in my steering wheel from 11-1 which makes driving sloppy. Any suggestions?
I just got a 2000xk sport and it turns maybe halfway to the left..... the kid I got it from knows nothing about it before he got it. Any idea what someone did? I figured the pitman arm is keyed and really only goes on one way ...I know for sure I need to get another steering column and fix all 4 fenders coz the cut the pinch weld off
first you should check the things I go over on the death wobble videos, even though you dont have death wobble you could have something loose down there. after youve checked all that then the last step might be tightening your gearbox. Ive got a vid coming out soon for that.
Going to do this tomorrow on the new 89 build. Hello from the TardSquad🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 Saw you guys last weekend in The Walmart parking lot near windrock. Hopefully soon we will be hitting the trails in the XJ. ✌🏻
My Jeep has a very bad wobble in the front end usually when I hit a bump but not always it stops if I slow down steering box is leaking I was told by the dealership a long time ago it was bad can a bad steering box cause this wobble?
got a question... I got a steering problem. my jeep turns perfectly fine when turning right. but when I turn left it's really hard to steer. I've replaced the pump 3 times and same issue occurs. any idea what it might be? I don't have leaks at all. info will be appreciated
Dud thanks for the video. I stopped by a pick and pull and installed my steering gear box today, but I'll tell you this much its a pain in the @$$ to put back on. With this video it really has provided me with the knowledge and confidence to tackle this problem. Thanks again.
Just had to swap one of these out on a friends xj when we sheared two of the bolts trying to install bracket for new bumper and the spacer was junk coming off. Matt do you know best way to extract sheared bolts from the box?
Hey guys I’m having the same problem with my jeep. Should I replace the seal first or should I replace the whole gear box? It is a 97 and I’m not sure when the last time it had been worked on/replaced. Thanks for your feedback👍👍👍
Not all of them come off easy but don't give up! After soaking in PB blast for 4 days and breaking a ratchet and 2 $15 pitman arm pullers I rented a $97 puller from AutoZone. Should have just done that to begin with. Initially it didn't work, tightened it pretty good and whacked it with a splitting maul multiple times, but after leaving it tight overnight I tightened it as tight as I could with a breaker bar and continued to hit it with the splitting maul and it finally came off.
i have an 98 jeep cherokee. I have had a death wobble sense last spring. Sense then i have replaced inner and outer tie rods, upper lower ball joints, hub systems, rotors brakes, sway bar stabilizers pins and bushings, also steering dampener, and still have a shake. the gear box and control arms is all i have left. how do i know which one to replace?
bleepinjeep there off my firebird. 215 75 R15 Fire Hawk slightly shorter than the recommended 225 75. They only had about 3 thousand on rotation. I also forgot to say i had an alignment done by Firestone. Not positive on the balancing. When i replaced my ball joints i had the tires put on and it seemed fixed just like every other time i replaced something. Shortly after, the shake in the steering and the wobble in the tires makes it way back. I have a small oil leak out of my filter that has been dripping onto the passengers side upper control arm. Well lubbercated through out the years.
Sort of, if your steering box is bad and causing you to have slack in the steering, THAT can cause death wobble but there is more than one reason you could have slack in steering.
I think I need to get a steering box brace. Do you have any metal bracing for the steering box for support? I went out wheeling and I was trying to turn the wheel and I couldnt turn it at all. I was flexed out pretty well. I think my box is going out. 97XJ
Ok now I see why you skipped the actual removal, mine was stuck on like crazy! I have a 96 ZJ mine didnt have that bracket behind the gearbox? Huge note if you have an airbag DO NOT let the steering wheel turn.
Do you know of a good place to get a new gearbox from? I hear this auto parts store ones develop play in a few weeks and I dont really want to rebuild mine since it's my daily driver and have little time to play around
BleepinJeep they do but they are made poorly. I asked about it on naxja. But I'm going to find one! It's the next thing after I fix whatever is causing my engine to ping!
hey man, I'm currently swapping out my gearbox on my 2000 xj with a 99 durango box and i can't get my steering linkage on the input shaft of the new gear box. i don't want to force it and fuck up the splines, is there a trick to this? or do i just suck.
Nick Makiney How do you like the 99 Durango box? I just put one on my 90 YJ and the steering has virtually no slop. However, it's about 10x harder to turn the wheel. It's not as bad as no power steering, but it's definitely a pain in the butt to turn now. Since I made the swap, I've read a few places that the Durango box is actually a downgrade from the YJ box. Any comments?
It took me two hours, 15 adaptors, 13 trips to the part store, an impact drill that didn't even budge it, and a 100lb torque bar just to get the damn pitman nut off from the box/arm. Now my impact isn't strong enough to get the pitman puller to pull off the arm. Wish me luck. This 7 minute video of looking like a 2 day project for this tiny little 4 foot something, 110 pounds lady. 🤣
I recently wrecked my jeep into a fence, not much damage just needs a new fender and maybe a steering box? I was wondering if anyone could help me and tell me if the seals broke or the entire steering box. As soon as i wrecked i backed up and power fluid started pouring from under the steering box and the steering started to get alot stiffer to were it was taking alot of my strength just to turn the wheel. The box itself looks fine no cracks or anything just that leak. Can anyone tell me if i broke it or just broke the seals would appreciate any help thanks.
Oh men thanks so much am about to take it off I broke one of the bolts that hold the box when replacing my bumper, so am installing a new one and this is the best practical easier video about removing it jeep it up men thanks I mean keep it up but also jeepry appreciate it
I was expecting some comedy gold when i saw the machete. But then I was rewarded by imagining the steering box was a baby, and he delivered it with appropriate grunts and groans and HUUPHS!! Stay gold.
Thank You Very Much!!! You were very helpful, I Love the Giant Rambo Knife. I'm swapping my daughters 98 steering box today. You had us Laughing, your real funny as well. God Bless
One thing i wish i did first, its spray some cleaner and take it to the self carwash to clean off the chucks of dirt and oil with the water pressure gun.
why not put on a 98 or 99 durango box?? why put the junk plate back on??? You probably have enough scrap in the shop to make one!! Why chance the cheap made "brace" on the trail. Sometimes its hard enough without a break down that could have been avoided. I really dont mean to criticize but I don't know of another way to phase it.
Matt, years later I still come back to these videos for help. Your awesome.
Great tutorials! Way to go on cutting out the boring stuff, and none of the endless blubbering chit chat like in other videos! Keep it up!
Nice machete.
I just did this to my Jeep Cherokee Classic '06 and I couldn't have done it without this video.

I saved $350 because of this video. Thanks.
everyone uses the durango, but I also have a box rebuild video if interested. I've never had problems with the xj box!
Hope mine comes out in 7 mins and 34 secs haha, nice job Thanks
Sweet, glad I could help and thanks for watching!
do you have the box out? and is there anything left of the bolts to grab onto?
Very informative video, my jeep cherokee's steering gear box fell out when i was pulling out of the parking lot, the bolts that hold it in place somehow snapped, thanks for the video!
Awesome video Matt. Anyone that owns a Cherokee that does their own work would appreciate any of your videos. I have leaky seals so this will help me a bunch when I do the job. I was very surprised to find the rebuild video. Your friend Matt is quite knowledgeable with attention to detail.
I love your Jeep so much and I love the fact that you use it and get some mud on it!

Definitely should upgrade! Have you looked into swapping in a durango box?
I have found if it wont slide off then unbolt the gearbox completely and pull on the gearbox itself... seems to work pretty good.
Good suggestion, disconnecting power steering hoses at the P/S pump! I didn't do that and put a nick in the o-ring on the high pressure hose while struggling to get it connected to the steering box. Initially it worked fine, but a few blocks from the house I lost all my power steering fluid!

Good advice. I'll be working on the steering box on my CJ this summer, so I will keep that in mind. On the surface, the CJ job looks a lot simpler than this, here's hoping!
well make sure it is the correct steering box first. also they are keyed so make sure the gear box and the pitman arm keys line up.

I have a gap in my steering. would that be a bad gear box or just a loose pitman arm?
Would a 99 dodge durango steering box fit right in to a 99 jeep xj?
did you ever fixed the problem? i have the same issue in my grand cherokee and i would like to know what is the issue there
What replacement steering box do you suggest?
Going to do this tomorrow on the new 89 build. Hello from the TardSquad🤘🏻😎🤘🏻 Saw you guys last weekend in The Walmart parking lot near windrock. Hopefully soon we will be hitting the trails in the XJ. ✌🏻

i was wondering your opinion of the durango box upgrade.
well not much but I do know it is a direct swap and it turns faster and has a bit more force.
got a question... I got a steering problem. my jeep turns perfectly fine when turning right. but when I turn left it's really hard to steer. I've replaced the pump 3 times and same issue occurs. any idea what it might be? I don't have leaks at all. info will be appreciated

Katie Hall may just be toe alignment off... check that?
Katie Hall unless u have play in box or bad main bearing on output shaft. mines did.
Great video , very helpful

hey can you make a video on how to remove the steering shaft my bf has a 95 wrangler and he does not know how to remove it
Does a Wrangler have the spacer?
Is that spacer really needed?
I've been having problems with zombies lingering around the shop.
Where can I find a jeep Cherokee steering box at?
Do you know of a good place to get a new gearbox from? I hear this auto parts store ones develop play in a few weeks and I dont really want to rebuild mine since it's my daily driver and have little time to play around

How to change the steering shaft? (Jeep xj RHD)
Quick and to the point. Thanks!
Would this be the same as my 2001 jeep grand cherokee?
Yep
im still trying to take off my 2001 jeep grand cherokee (pitman arm) no luck! did u have any luck getting it off?

Thanks for this video. I am going to change mine in a ZJ v-8. I am sure this will be helpful. I have subscribed before.
why didnt you powerwash first?
It looks like some of your track bar brecket hold down bolts are loose.... One of them look almost all the way off....
they were, nice spot!
Who's this kid!? Love the videos Matt. I'm almost done with my first build.... Its all your fault :)
What's with the open carry machete?..
Great video man!
Thanks for this video Brotha good stuff
Short and sweet 👍🏻
Just wondering. Why to you have a machete on u??
Jonny Villalobos Zombies!
I was expecting some comedy gold when i saw the machete.
But then I was rewarded by imagining the steering box was a baby, and he delivered it with appropriate grunts and groans and HUUPHS!!
Stay gold.
Thanks very much for this video, I really appreciate and it has been very helpful for me.
Great video! You made it look way too easy though! Lol
Thanks for the video
I heard a 99 durango will fit my 98 xj
man i feel u.. i did my box wen i replaced the radiator. so much easier that way.
Good job
You make things look so easy lol
Thank You Very Much!!!
You were very helpful, I Love the Giant Rambo Knife. I'm swapping my daughters 98 steering box today. You had us Laughing, your real funny as well.
God Bless
Ill have to check that, I didnt notice.
My spacer shattered and 2 of 3 bolts snapped on me yesterday lost all steering lol jeep stuff
Upgrade for a Durango or Dakota stering box, its bolt on, check it!!!
Your spacer is still intact?!?!
it was in my shop and not mobile
think I'm just going to go hydro assist.
whatz up with the machete???
probably so
Def invest in a line wrench set.
Would not having it cause your box to pivot and make your wheels turn more on one diiretion
i have the same issue
Looks like the Pitman arm was on so loose, you could have tightened the puller with your fingers and got it off :)
I dont know about that but if the spacer is broken or missing your steering will be all kinds of F'ed up!
Easier to pull the air box,, everything all there to take out except pitman arm,,, at least in my 1994 and two 1995' JGC...
