1. Do i use it regularly? 2. Do i love it/does it spark joy? 3. Do i have a specific use planned for it? 4. What is the worst case scenario if i got rid of this? 5. Do I have the space to store it? 6. If i were going to move soon, would I go through the trouble of moving this item? 7. Would I purchase this again?
I just found your channel. I almost have the opposite problem regarding space because.....i live in a 4,000sq ft house....it was the my parents and growing up we had a family of 7 living here, random additonal family memebers living here on a short term basis....and all of them....left everything they didnt want anymore without clearing their space. Needless to say when my husband passed away...me and my kids moved back in here with all of our stuff too. And my mom never got rid of ANYTHING. I have to ask myself....do i want to manage this item if i become responsible for every item in this massive place. The answer is ALWAYS no. I already have cleaned out so many rooms here....and i still have about 3 rooms that are absolute nightmare hoarding situations. On to the next one! Great tips, keep up the good work!
I don't know where I originally heard it, but the "reverse" method of "what do I want to KEEP?" has been SO HELPFUL! I am moving in a few days/within the next 2 weeks and have to declutter a whole house into my vehicle and a small storage unit. I am trying to get rid of at least 2x more than I keep.
The "reverse decluttering" where you think about what you want to _keep_ instead, and removing everything and putting things back is a great idea that I'll be using. The "21 item pickup" thing is great too, that cuts everything down into smaller jobs.
i know im asking randomly but does any of you know a method to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost my account password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me.
One of the questions really spoke to me. I will be downsizing so I really need to think about what is worth packing and moving. I'm also using up what I have before bringing anything else in my cleared spaces.
Such a useful and helpful video! Thanks so much. As you said, when decluttering a big space seems too overwhelming, starting with a drawer or shelf really sets the stage for doing the rest. Added tip: When there are certain items that I don't necessarily love but are sentimental, I put them away and return to them weeks or months later, that way I can decide again if I truly need it to be taking up space in my house. Take a picture of it and let it go if it's not loved. ☺️
I purchased a good shredder and set it right by my desk and when I get the mail and I shred everything I don’t need unless it’s like a newspaper has helped me a lot
I hate paper. I think it reproduces at night. I sort my mail in my garage where my trash and recycling bins are. It helps, but there is always something that you need to bring in. I ‘ve also requested that most of my bills be sent electronically. Again, it helps, but…
You’ve got some great tips. And your video quality is fabulous. If you ever do a new version of this video.. consider adding b-roll to make the video more stimulating.
Just found and love you! I double like call in reinforcements. I'm currently waiting for my dil's to come help with one specific closet. My hoarding area 🤯😳.
Omg that shelf behind you!!!!! I’ve been looking at those square cubby storage shelves but yours is exactly what I’ve been looking for where did you get it !!!
I do love these shelves. Here's a blog post on them: getorganizedhq.com/organize/ Or, if you would like to know exactly how to set up these shelves, plus others, you can get my brand new Shelfie Handbook here: shop.getorganizedhq.com/products/the-shelfie-handbook
The only one of these that I already do is the mail thing. I live in an apartment and by our mailboxes there is a trash can so I throw junk mail out before I ever bring it in to the house.
Spreading decluttering process over the time and starting with easier/quickest rooms helps me. I started with dining, family and living rooms where we spend the most time. Then moved onto kitchen. I'm so motivated to get to the bedrooms, garage and attic next. It will take another 3 months or so for the second round of decluttering to complete. Then I'll do 3 more rounds to call it done before end of the year. It will go on maintenance in 2022.
I would like to add a question to ask yourself, for those that struggle with long term organization (but don't know why)! I personally struggled to de-clutter long term. I NEVER understood why I struggled so much to de-clutter by the guidelines set in place by other de-clutterers. I don't resonate with the "does this spark joy" or "have I used this in the past year" mindsets- because of course a lot of things spark joy and memories - but I am GOOD at getting rid of things that others would hold onto for emotional value; I don't hold onto things EMOTIONALLY. So I really struggled with why, even though I was asking myself (what I thought were) the right questions, I still struggled to stay organized and why I couldn't de-clutter as successfully as others did. I found out that I am a bee-type clutter personality, so I like USEFUL items - and I struggle to let those "this could be useful one day" things go. I have this brain that grapples with utilitarian reasoning; "I could fix this, I can make that, it would be wasteful to throw this out, I can wear this for something very specific/when I lose 10 pounds", to my detriment. I hold onto them for their value in a possible future of "I might NEED THAT" A question that has helped me TREMENDOUSLY (and how I have "hacked" this clutter personality) is: "Do I want to MANAGE this item". By using the mindset of viewing my house like an "inventory" of stuff that I have to hold onto, keep clean and in general - manage - it has reminded me that I am a bee - almost literally; I am very busy, very on-the-go all the time, and don't have a lot of time or attention to set aside for managing things I have lost control of, like my clutter. I like to find things quickly, easily, and without spending 20 minutes panic-searching for an item that I have probably stashed in some weird place, because I don't have the space, time, or energy to manage it. It also prevents me from bringing MORE "useful" items into my home (I ask myself in the store if I want to MANAGE it) and if the answer is no, I move on. This question scratches my "bee brain" in a way that Maria Condo's emotional approach never could reach. I do not find a lot of "joy" in my things in the way that others find it - I find usefulness, just-in-case, and price/time investment attachment to my things. So viewing decluttering like I was a manager really helped me keep long term organization in place! I hope this can help other people out there who struggle to de-clutter because other styles of de-cluttering questions don't quite resonate or help them, just like me!
Thank you SO much for sharing!!! I love how you thought through this and found the question that worked for you, and I suspect will also work for a lot of other people, too!!

I have lots of decluttering bins. I call them trash cans.
I don't know where I originally heard it, but the "reverse" method of "what do I want to KEEP?" has been SO HELPFUL!

Best wishes with this task!

The decision fatigue one is SO TRUE! That's what gets me...things don't have homes either.
It is definitely real, isn't it?!?

Yes, I love the "Would I keep this if I were moving question?"
Omg this is gold! I’ve watched a lot of videos trying to get things under control but this idea of reverse decluttering is genius!
Just changing your mindset makes such a huge difference!
Best list of decluttering-questions I have seen! Thank you from Germany!

Hello Tuesday Nicole
I would like to add a question to ask yourself, for those that struggle with long term organization (but don't know why)!
I personally struggled to de-clutter long term. I NEVER understood why I struggled so much to de-clutter by the guidelines set in place by other de-clutterers. I don't resonate with the "does this spark joy" or "have I used this in the past year" mindsets- because of course a lot of things spark joy and memories - but I am GOOD at getting rid of things that others would hold onto for emotional value; I don't hold onto things EMOTIONALLY. I hold onto them for their value in a possible future of "I might NEED THAT"
A question that has helped me TREMENDOUSLY (and how I have "hacked" this clutter personality) is: "Do I want to MANAGE this item".
