  • Valerie's Formula for Strawberry Tapioca:
YOU MAY USE THIS FORMULA FOR YOUR PERSONAL USE HOWEVER THE FORMULA MAY NOT BE SOLD OR PRESENTED AS YOUR OWN!
Always be sure to put through a Soap Calc first.
In this formula I used 38% Lye liquid and Super Fatted at 7%.
Sodium lactate was at 5% and added at room temp/warm when yogurt was added after cook.
This is a 2lb soap batch.
2 tbsp. of yogurt added after cook at room temperature.
2tbsp sugar mixed with 2 tbsp. water added hot after cook.
1oz of Apple cider Vinegar added hot after cook and 1tbsp maple syrup added hot after cook.
1.5tsp of tapioca powder mixed with 2tsp water and added room temperature after cook.
The oils and butters are as follows:
    5% Almond Oil,
    7% Avocado butter,
    9% Canola oil,
    13% Castor oil,
    13% Coconut oil 76degree,
    5% Kokum butter,
    19% Olive oil,
    3% Palm Kernel Oil Flakes,
    11% Palm oil,
    3% Stearic Acid,
    12% Beef Tallow.
I used 4 ounces of water and 1.25 ounces of Aloe Vera juice for my lye liquid along with 1tsp fine sea salt, mixed very well before I added my lye.
I used 5 ounces of coconut milk (3 ounce hot in the cook and 2 ounces hot after vaseline stage)
When my oils and butters were hot I added my 1 ounce of cooked strained oatmeal and 2 tsp of kaolin clay and stick blend well.
When my oils were around 195 degrees F,
I added my lye to the lye liquid and stirred well and let set until the lye liquid was around 181-183 and my oils were at 178F,
I then added the lye to the oils and did a little SB then added the 3 ounces of hot coconut milk.
Came to thick trace real quick.
I covered with plastic wrap and in 2minutes 30 seconds it started to volcano, I whisked it down and recovered and waited 3 minutes. Whisked it down and recovered another 3 minutes, it was at thick Vaseline stage.
I added the hot sugar water, apple cider vinegar and 2 ounces of coconut milk,
Waited 1 minutes and added Sodium lactate, yogurt andmaple syrup.
Checked pH and it was a 10.
Recovered for 5 minutes and then added the tapioca and FO. Thanks for watching, subscribing and commenting.

hello Ashley, thank you for stopping by and thank you so very kindly for those positive words...most of my HP, is manageable to do designs and ive done designs even with thick HP, but it doesnt matter at what temp you cook, or what method you use to cook, just saving some liquid for after the cook and adding hot really helps... i've give tips and hints with most of my videos on HP to make it more manageable, hope you get a chance to check them out, have a super day!

I'm so very happy that they can help in any way, and I know sometimes it takes awhile to watch, but I had been asked to show how I do things, and I wanted them to be as easy to understand as I could make them....I see in some of them I have said things the wrong way, so i'm hoping that it all works out, thank you again, and i'm no soaping celebrity , but just wanting to help out and share, what I've learned along the way, and i'm still learning and hope to continue to do so. Once again thank you !

    Dear Valery!
As a great follower of Hot Process, I like your system to do it, unlike the conventional process, which is longer and tedious and often boring because it does not allow drawings or combinations of colors as the Fluid Hot process.
I love your channel, is so straightforward and well explained. You comunicate from the heart and this is soooo uncommon nowadays.... that most of the contemporary human beings just move for "extra economical profits" beyond a salary to live.
Your generosity in sharing your formulas and the enterly process makes it so easy to attempt that I am sure you help lots of people with your videos, as well as me.
Your loving way of sharing your works and experiences live , with this sweet sense of humor when the process doesn't go as planned, captivates me. And of course always with your "honey" close to you. Sooo tender.
For all that and more, my dear Valery, CONGRATULATIONS and thanks for your generosity.
    Warm regards from Barcelona SPAIN
    Yours,
    MARILÚ

Dear Airefresc Bcn, thank you for watching and thank you ever so much for those very generous, caring, kind and supportive words, I truly appreciate them from my heart. I'm so glad you enjoy them and that they can help in any way at all. You can get manageable batter , I have found, with any HP method at all, for example, you can get manageable batter with low temp, high temp, in the microwave, in the oven, on top of the stove, in a crock pot and so on, just need to keep it moist, don't over cook it and save some liquid for the end, add yogurt (I started doing the yogurt in all my HP soaps about 3 years ago) and the yogurt truly helps, sodium lactate goes so very well too! My hubby thanks you as well and sending big hugs to you across all the many miles to you in Spain! Thank you again so very much! It was such a pleasure to read your post! :-)

The swirl turned out beautifully! I have a tropical FO that I can't wait to use. I think I will try for something similar with the colors changed up a little. Thank you for the inspiration!
Out of curiosity, what do you call this soaping method? Is is considered hot process? I make cold process and have been considering other methods, so I'd like to learn more. Any information is appreciated. Thanks! ( :

Thank you! yes, this is HP done with high temperatures, so that it cooks itself really. You can do this in a crock pot, or on top of the stove, or in the oven or in the microwave... my normal way of doing high temperature HP is in a crock where I use the oils and lye at high temperaturs and have the crock on warm, then when it hits Vaseline stage I shut the crock off or even take it out of the crock pot. You do not have to cook at high temperatures to get "Manageable" hot process soap, you can cook on lower temps and I would encourage anyone starting out with HP to use low temperatures, I have a low temperature HP for beginners and it is called "Pink Lemonade" and I give the formula for it as well, not sure if you would have seen it or not, but it can help give you a better idea on Hot process and there is another video I have on "Low Temperature" hot process that has a simple formula as well and it goes through the different stages of HP. I still do CP as well, but HP is for sure my favorite. I hope you enjoy and do try HP and experiment and see what you like and how you like to do it. There are a few ways and i'm still learning even though it's been 5 years and I learn from new and old alike. Thank you again for your questions and interest.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I never knew you could do so much design with hot process. The method you used is very interesting - I am planning to try the hot process and it's the first time I have seen your method. I like it because the soap is so fluid which allows for creating swirls. Very well presented.

Hello Claudette Phillip and thank you for watching and for your kind comments. I have a few youtube videos on here and this one is high temperature HP, but I have a couple that are low temperature HP and they are done in a crock pot, sometimes in the Electronic part and sometimes out of it. They all have about the same type of tips , but I've swirled some real thick batter, and very few of my soaps are this fluid. What I like to get is a "manageable" batter :-), and remember the most important thing is that your formula is good for your skin i.e. non-drying and conditioning. big hugs

I've microwaved HP as well, and tried the oven, which I liked too, haven't tried on top of the stove yet, and of course then there is the way our ancestors made it! So many different ways for sure, I still use low temperature, but most of the time high temperature, and I can only do 2lbs in the glass bowl, for 3lb and up I heat it in the crock , then take it out and continue it from there. My hubby is a great helper for sure and I appreciate him very much. You are most welcome!

Hello Melanie and thank you so kindly for watching and for your interest! I do both HP and CP, but my favorite and the one I do most is HP! I would just encourage you to read up on it, watch videos, all kinds of soapers HP videos and then try a very simple batch at low temperature and then work your way up! I do have one on here called Pink Lemonade that is a low temp, with less ingredients --- but you already know about soap making, and I know you will do great!

Hi Valerie, I made a HTHP soap following your method step by step and I loved it. I will probably make all the soaps this way apart from the melt and pour ones of course. Thank you so much for this video.
I have one question. How long do we cure the soap before using?

Hello Malvika Hayer , thank you for watching and your kind supportive words. I'm so very happy this has helped you out in any way at all. This particular formula had quite a bit of coconut milk in it, so even though it was done at 38%, because of the particular formula, it took about 3 weeks. My soaps are usually ready to sell in 2 weeks, some in 1, but they benefit from 2 - 3 weeks even though you can use right away.

Hi Valerie, I just found your videos a couple days ago and I want to thank you! I new to soap making and have watched tons and tons of videos. You are about the only one that goes into great detail and actually answers questions asked in comments. You're awesome! And I also love that your husband helps. Mine works out of state and when he's home he helps me and is learning with me as we plan in the next year to move to somewhat of a farm and make a lot of our own products. I do have somewhat of a long question (I have read thru all of the comments...I'm just trying to make sure I'm understanding correctly. Hope you don't mind!) So here goes: total water to lye is suppose to be 12 oz (rounded down from 12.16 just for sake of
math in this post). Lye is 4.3 (rounded up from 4.273). Apple Cider Vingar is added
to lye solution at 1.5 oz of the total 12 oz of water and Aloe Vera Juice is added at 1.25 oz.
So with the Apple Cider Vinegar & Aloe Vera Juice that brings the remaining water amount down to 9.25 and of that 9.25
I would at very least use 5.5 of just water, 1.5 of Apple Cider Vinegar & 1.25 Aloe Vera Juice to dissolve the 4.3 of lye.
For a total of 4.3 Lye to 8.25 of water, Apple Cider Vingear & Aloe Vera Juice.
That would leave 3.75 oz of water to dissolve sugar, tapicoa powder and kaolin clay?
And the glycerin used to dissolve colorants and the 5 oz coconut milk isn't accounted for at all in any of the calculations
correct? If the coconut milk isn't accounted for is that considered the SF?
Did I do the math right? What I'm doing is trying to get the math/calculations right and/or
understood in my mind as to how all this is figured. Good grief I feel like the tiny bit of my understanding
of all this has completely gone out the window. LOL!

Hello Maria A Carroll -- thank you for watching and thank you ever so much for your very kind and generous encouraging words, we appreciate them so very much and i'm so very happy that these videos can help in even small ways! Don't ever worry about asking questions, even though I might not be able to answer them right away, I would try to find the answer for you. How wonderful to be going to your farm and working together for sure! congratulations on that. Okay --- you are so very close with those calculations, except the coconut milk etc. Basically I broke down my lye liquid amount as follows: 38$ lye liquid, 2lb batch for my formula was 12.16 ounces, I rounded mine up to 12.25 oz -- I used 4 ounces water, 1.25 ounces AVJ for my lye amount (lets say it was 4.3 :-)) which is 5.25 take away from 12.25 = 7 ounces of liquid left - I used 5 ounces of coconut milk ( 3 ounces in the cook and 2 ounces after the cook, both added hot) which left 2 ounces of liquid from the 12.25, I used 1 ounce of cooked strained oatmeal (in the cook) and used the last 1 ounce for apple cider vinegar added after the cook. You can change that around any way you like i.e. you can use all water or change the amounts of any of those for sure, just to make sure that you have "at least" the same amount of liquid as lye to put the lye into and make sure if adding salt , to dissolve it "before" you add the lye. Then after the cook, I added the apple cider vinegar (discounted from total liquid), I added 2 tbsp. sugar mixed with 2 tbsp. water (completely dissolved and added heated up), 1tbsp maple syrup mixed with 1 tbsp. water (you could actually mix the sugar and maple syrup together and just add 2 tbsp. water total and totally dissolve, which I think would be better and I do that now), 2tbsp yogurt added at room temp, and 5% sodium lactate (5% of the total OIL amount) and added warm or at room temp after the cook and I do not discount that amount of sodium lactate or the tbsp. of water to mix with sugar or the tapioca and of course the 2tsp of water added to the 1.5 tsp of tapioca powder and you don't have to add that at all. --- i'm hoping this makes more sense then the notes on the video -- not to worry about this formula and all the extras in there especially being new to soaping, you could do this formula without all the extras, or just use 10 ounces of water for the lye and 2.25 ounces of coconut milk added after the cook, that would be more simpler for your first time for sure --- the glycerin I use for mixing my colors is really teeny tiny amount , maybe 1/8 tsp, then 1tsp water and that would mix with 1tsp mica, so you might need more depending on how much mica you used and I don't discount that tiny bit of water for my colors --- the kaolin clay I put into my heated oils and stick blend before adding the lye liquid, I do not mix the kaolin clay with any liquid at all --- when adding milk to the heated oils, i'll have it ready heated on the stove, and as soon as my lye liquid goes in and I stick blend a couple of spurts i'll add my milk right away and stick blend really well until thick or medium trace. I do have a simpler formula on there under Pink Lemonade , here is the ink to it: ruclips.net/video/XljXuL0TWgU/видео.html and if you like you can email me if you like to discuss further for sure at: valeriemosher@eastlink.ca and I do have a Christian Soapers Any Process on FB if you are interested in joining that as well....please feel free to contact me if you like with any more questions etc. big hugs

hello A Garrison, thank you for stopping by and thank you ever so humbly for those very generous and kind words, i appreciate them very much... there are quite a few really good HP soapers out there now and some of them make videos as well, Valerie Howell Holdren has a channel and Tina Moenck has a channel as well... i do most of mine now in a crock pot, as it maintains heat and i dont have to heat up my oils and lye so high... you can make smooth HP with lower temps, actually you can make HP with any temp in any method i.e. crock pot, in the oven, in the microwave, in a bowl on top of the stove, it's just saving some of that total liquid to add after the cook (liquid deducted from the original amount and added in milk or whatever you choose and added hot, and using yogurt , sodium lactate, and being quick of course and keeping all utensils warm / heated), so very glad you enjoyed it.

Hello Carla Leeson and thank you for watching and those lovely kind words, I really appreciate them. I've been soaping around 3 1/2 years and I'm still learning and hope I never stop :-) A formula can make a difference in how your batter will be manageable or not as well, how much lye liquid you use and so on, the size even can make a difference. Say you were doing a 1lb of this formula instead of a 2lb, it might take longer to get to Vaseline stage, as it takes longer to heat up (should be the opposite, but I found that's not so). Sometimes if I have a problem that the 1lb isn't working or even a 2lb , you can always pop it in the microwave for 20-30 seconds, but keep an eye on it and make sure it's in a big enough bowl so it doesn't overflow. You are most welcome!

Good morning Blanca Davila and thank you for watching. Thank you so much for your kind comment. You can also use your crock pot to heat your oils to the desired temperature and then take the crock out of the electronic part, add your heated lye liquid and it will work just like the glass bowl, But you have to be careful as the crock will still be warm and depending on your lye and oil temperatures it could volcano faster for sure. I do big batches that way, in my crock.

Hello Eric H my neighbor in the US! Thank you so much for watching and for those kind words! I do CP, but my favorite is HP. So many different ways to make soap indeed. Love using high temperature HP but I also like using low temperature HP, then there is the microwave HP, in the oven, on the stove top! and our ancestors would have used a fire pit with a big cauldron?! Yes, the tapioca came about by accident really, but I do use it often, not in every soap as I did find it can turn the soap a bit of off white color, but if your coloring , should be fine. Thank you again!

Thank you for posting this video. I have been facinated by how soap is made since I saw it made over a fire in a cast iron pot at Stone Mountain Georgia. I have not made any yet, just soaking up the knowledge of videos like yours on RUclips. Thank you also for your recipe ! Most soapers are like, I'm not gonna share my "secret recipe". For me the recipe helps me to understand the percentages of fat to lye ratio and how it all works together. I see too that you are so generous with the time you take to answer all the questions that people ask. I know that I will also have plenty of questions and it gives me joy that I know you will be there to answer them. You have been blessed with a gift, you have turned something that you love doing into a business that can help support your family. Hopefully after the first of the year I'll get my courage up and take a swing at it. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. ✌🏻❤

Dear Dianne Naworensky - thank you ever so much for stopping by and thank you so very humbly for those encouraging kind and very thoughtful words, from my heart I appreciate them! I have learned a lot from research, reading, watching, and from new soapers and experienced soapers and I too am still learning all the time....I love to share and help, encourage others if I can, so you are so very welcome indeed! My soaping wasn't meant to be a business at all, just for me and my family and then it was like "2 people told 2 people" etc, and my Lord blessed this soap making and it truly just exploded....now i'm cutting back as it has become overwhelming and my husband has had a lot of health issues this past year and we are still dealing with those, God willing it will all fall into place. I use to buy homemade soap my whole life and always ended up throwing it away as it didn't help my dry skin; then one year we were down in Georgia visiting a friend who had a dog of mine and she made homemade soap, she gave us some and well "WOW"! I literally said "WOW, now this is what homemade soap should be"!!!! and we started the research of making homemade soap and now I've learned that "not all homemade soap is created equal"... I've learned about the dryness of soap or the "cleansing" number of formulas and the conditioning number and so my main objective in making soap is to make it non-drying and more conditioning for the skin - I do have shampoo bars that are low cleansing and low in the conditioning numbers because you don't want grease laying on the hair, but there is soooooooo much and I love using things in creation that God put there for us and so i'll always be learning,... I do have an unscented line, an all natural line, regular, and then some facial bars, shampoo bars ….and I do lip balms and body lotion bars, that's about it right now...but I do enjoy it, and I love using it, and I love sharing with others. Big hugs and I do hope you get a chance to try out the formulas and experiment and love using them as well! big hugs, Merry Christmas

I can tell you knew what you were wanting to accomplish mine are always a stab in the dark :)..thank you so much. You have encouraged me to be more deliberate in my soaping. I have never even thought to add ACV. I have been playing around with soap calc coming up with a new recipe and I decided to up my superfat to 7% and I see that is what you did. My hopes were to get it a bit more conditioning. Was that your purpose or is my thinking off? Well, thank you again and keep them coming.

Hello MaryFrances C and thank you for watching and thank you so much for all those lovely kind words, I truly appreciate them. Makes me so very happy if any of the videos I do can help anyone in any way!. Not all of what I envision comes out as planned for sure, even after 4 years I have disasters in what it looks like, and sometimes they are just not pleasing to look at, BUT, the main thing for me in homemade soap is that it is high conditioning and low Cleansing/low drying... So when I look at a formula and it will depend on whether it is a shampoo bar, body bar, face bar AND/OR what it is made of, but for face and body I love low cleansing and high conditioning, sometimes I SF at 7%, sometimes 8% and sometimes 10%, if it is my ocean brine bar I'll SF at 15%, simply because of the high cleansing number on that formula. I've tried a lot of homemade soap over the years and have never ditched my "oil of olay" lol, until I had a friend of mine from Georgia give me a couple of hers and they were marvelous, super lovely on the skin etc., and so I threw away my Oil of olay and my hubby threw away his irsih spring and I started making my own, --- now I know, for sure, that not all homemade soap is created equal and I can see why some people say it wasn't nice, if only they had known that there is "great" for the skin homemade soap out there for sure! You are most welcome indeed! big hugs

@@shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907 Would you mind answering a question? I want to start with an oatmeal honey soap and I want to know if I mix the honey with water to add at the end would I discount my water by the amount I mix with the honey?

Hello @@charlottabrower7968 When I mix honey it will depend on which im making, but say im making a 2lb batch of soap and I m adding 2 tbsp. of honey after the cook, ill add about 1-2Tbsp water and i'll mix completely and add it warm when the temp of the batter is under 175F and I do not discount the tbsp. water

Wow Wow Wow. I watched the Christmas Candy (late Christmas eve, not on purpose but totally appropriate, lol.) And then this one. I'm inspired to dig into my pantry and dust off my crock pot. I will have to watch a couple more videos to see just what you're doing with this new to me method.
    Merry Christmas

    Hello from Hatchet Lake, NS!
I enjoyed your video - I've never seen this particular HP technique. You certainly got the fluidity needed for this type of swirl. Amazing. (I'm mostly CP, but always interested in different soaping methods.)
Very generous of you to share your recipe and all the details.

Hello Corinne and thank you for watching. I do CP as well, and I do HP by slow method too, just depends on my formula, and I've done HP in the microwave as well and in the oven. Love HP. Been busy getting ready for Christmas. Glad you enjoyed it.

Absolutely gorgeous and I love your videos! Very informative and it was really interesting to see a volcano in action. I haven't witnessed that yet, myself, and always imagined the worst. Like, soap exploding from the pot, fast and furious, haha! I feel a bit more at ease about it now so thank you!

Thank you ever so much Olives Gal! Truly appreciate it. I would be really remiss if I didn't say you need to be xtra careful when cooking at high temps. Every formula is different and will work differently. May I suggest starting off with a 1lb batch and "ALWAYS" put in a container where you can be sure you have enough room to stir it down, so when the soap volcanoes and starts to rise you have enough room. And, I would not recommend going over 178F in temperatures, I have found for me personally, the higher the temps and the quicker harder the volcanoes. And always wear proper safety gear. Big hugs

Hi Valerie! Enjoyed your detailed video that you and your patient husband shared. I'm trying to get as much info on how to add colors to my natural soaps while keeping the soap liquid. Loved the greens. where your colors natural? where did you get them? Thanks Ana

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  7 лет назад

Hello Ana and thank you for those kind encouraging words, we appreciate them. None of the colors in Strawberry Tapioca were natural, they were all micas. I do have a few videos on natural colors though as I make a natural line of soaps as well, you've probably already seen the videos on here. I purchase the botanicals from different companies in Canada, Saffire Blue, New Directions Aromatics... thank you for your question
