Actually, the tagline of the game is "WHy does mankind defy it's fate?" Basically, the game never intended to have a happy ending. It pretended to have one only to slap you in the face every time. Because, let's be realistic, the true lesson they wanted to show was, the past shapes us, by reshaping it to our convenience we're just running away from our decisions (this is why the seeress was forbidden of using her knowledge for personal benefit). It's similar to Chrono Cross in this regard btw..

Dante Bell they were basically a duplicate of Noel and Serah by AI, like the Alyssa that they found in the normal episode. This is suppose to show an alternative ending if they would be stuck and killed by the AI in the tower.

They didn't defeat, it pretended to be defeated and since they were in it's virtual space the AI deleted their memories and duplicated them.

not sure if robots is the right term , i think they are just holograms like the Alyssa and Caius you saw in the Tower
