The story of Caius alone redeemed all the flaws in storyline for ffxiii-1. He made the ffxiii trilogy from a "meh" antagonist to this "Sephiroth and kefka owned" antagonist. It's really impressive.
The fact that Caius joylessly beats up on and tries to kill a couple of kids who are on a super positive "We can do it! We can save everyone!" mission because he sees that the timeline is cruel to one child who must die again and again... It's chilling and very nuanced. The fact that he gives them numerous chances to save themselves and stop their quest shows he takes no joy in the task at hand. He's not a monster, but a worn and very sad soul who had to watch numerous people suffer and die for centuries so that others could benefit. You start to sympathize with him. It's like if "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" actually had a story.
@@moatezmoussi9751 A chocobo with indigestion that's deaf, mute, blind, on fire and constantly headbutting cactuars is a better character than Sephiroth and Kefka combined.
Easily one of my favorite video game antagonists ever (I call him an antagonist because I don't see him as a "villain", since he's not actually "evil", at worst he's misguided), he has good intentions and he even tries to offer Serah and Noel their respective "happy endings", and had circumstances been different he could very easily have been made into a "darker" protagonist/hero. In the end he's really just a sad and broken man who nonetheless still tries to both do his "duty" (to protect and watch over Yeul) and also wants to find a way to spare Yeul from all of her countless painful early deaths due to her power. Caius was a character whom was incredibly easy to sympathize with and feel for, and that's one reason why I like him so much.
Caius is definitely among the top villains in Final Fantasy for me. Very different from most, and one of the very few if not only one that came out victorious in all his goals in the end. Not many villains have victory to their credit. His different themes have a very Russian musical feel to it; evoking pride, power, yet a distinct feel of sorrow in all of the themes. Among the best musical tracks in all of Final Fantasy for me.
I mean, Kefka absolutely won in VI. Sephiroth also kind of achieved his goals in VII, aside from, yknow, dying afterwards. But yeah, the villains with victory to their name are few and far between. This man is a pure, imposing force of nature.

+Anne-Katrien Geerts I was more a Kefka fan until 12, and then I became a Vayne fan. (He was the only redeeming part of that game to me...) But yeah, Caius took the cake.
My favorite line in video games from the last generation was from Caius' rant in the middle of the final battles. "There was a Yeul who dreamed of travel, a Yeul who loved to sing..." The realization that all the Yeuls were unique individuals cast the entire plot in a cosmic-terror light. Yeul isn't a character, but an endless line of slaves, meant to be freely broken and to die young. It trivializes Noel (and to a lesser extent Serah) in a way that all of Kefka's, Sephiroth's, and Kuja's taunting could never possibly achieve.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge caius fan but no one will ever have the chill of death like the one winged angel, sephiroth. His story and the involvement between him and jenova and him and cloud was just too legendary. Sorry guys but I have to keep sephiroth on the throne!!
I would definitely agree that Caius was not a villain. I'd even say his alignment in D&D terms would be Chaotic Good. I would go as far as to say he was the true hero of XIII-2.
I wouldn't even call him a villain just like I wouldn't call emet selch one both of those two such well written characters it's amazing that's why they rank so high in the fan favorite characters in final Fantasy

Yes! I love all of this man's themes. Thanks for creating this mix! And Caius's ending isn't really a villain-like one. Yeah, he got what he wanted with a well-thought plan, but how does he feel about it in LR? He's cynical; not happy or joyful but suffering. I just can't see him as an evil bad guy. There's so many unanswered questions about any feelings locked in his heart - he really didn't free Yeul as he had intended to before - in the end, they're doomed to stay forever within the chaos. And if 500 years passed, perhaps he went through crazy changes in character in the transition from XIII-2 to LR? That's what I think, even if he's immortal and years seem like weeks to him. Does he still want to be with the Yeuls? How does he feel about the state of the world dying? (Because he sure doesn't seem as joyful as a typical villain would sound) Possibly he hadn't originally intended to destroy it to even if he knew it would die in the first place, but that cut scene where he actually talks normally with Lightning...the way he looks at himself. It's hard to make out any emotion with him, (In a way, sort of like Lightning as well) but that gives me the feeling of bitterness, longing and torment from this tragic man. When LR came out, I just couldn't see Caius as a villain. He's solemn in it, and I believe he only challenged Lightning to a battle to show why he couldn't be saved. First he tells her it's futile to try, and, considering he's the most powerful being in that world, he allowed her to live to carry out her duty as the Savior and save the inhabitants - inhabitants that suffered because of his own actions. But hey, this is all that I think. We'll never truly know, but for me, if one thing's certain, now that he's got what he desired, he most likely regrets it. As for the Yeuls, I can't blame them. They're all girls that need him yet want to free him at the same time. They know he suffers because of them keeping him alive, but they can't face the hideous power of chaos alone. How Light feels for him? Hateful and possibly pitying him, but that's a whole 'nother story. I know this is a block full of text, but my enter button apparently doesn't work on RUclips...anyway, Caius is definitely my most favorite character other than Light! I love this mix of caius's themes. He was an amazing villain it's a shame his fight in LR was not a long one and I wish we could have battled him more often. His themes are why I love him as a villain I would say he's a better villain than sephiroth due to his story of why he is doing what he's doing to save yeul.
Amazingly done, and I feel bad for mentioning this, but there is technically one more. I *think* it's 4-16 on the XIII-2 soundtrack, but there's another Caius song that plays after the final battle when he confronts Serah and Noel. Still, never mind that, this is absolutely incredible o.o

Man, out of all the soundtrack videos out there, this one is my favourite because it's really well mixed with all Caius theme and it feels like one big battle against Caius, Besides 7 and Crisis Core, the 13 series is definitely up there for soundtrack for me
It's been so long but I will never forget the impact Cauis and Noel's story had on me. It was honestly the last time I could remember a game making me feel something so timeless and sad. Peak antagonist writing, we miss moral ambiguity here.
While Sarah and noel were trying to save the world they couldn't save yeul, caius wanted to destroy the world to free yeul from continues death and rebirth, to me that speaks volumes I'd rather save 1 life of eternal death and rebirth than save the thousands of souls that weren't cursed like yeul
With Seymor and Kefka is Caius on of my favourite Bosses/antagonists in Final Fantasy. Love his background, story, musictheme, appearence etc. So fitting. Was sooo happy to met him again in LR:FF and battle the shit out of him with his musictheme. Why isn't he coming to Dissidia as FF13 Antagonist?
Pretty nice mix I must say. Very well done and with the perfect timing for each shift. That plus Caius' awesome theme songs make an even more awesome track. Again, very well done and keep it up.
I'm so thoroughly enjoying this mix, but at the same time it feels like I'm holding up a lighter but also ugly crying. I'm about two sad thoughts away from crying about Caius' whole story.
I've always seen Caius as a fusion of Sephiroth and Kefka. The hopeless nihilism of Kefka who is driven not to rule but to destroy everything combined with the all-powerful tragic hero Sephiroth who is ultimately twisted by forces outside of his control.
This was EXACTLY what I was searching for. Thank you so much for posting. I'm now going to play it over every epic battle and moment in my fav final fantasy games Edit: I’m sorry, I misspoke. I meant to say I’m going to play it over every epic battle in every game til the day I die. Lol
I'm not gonna lie, we didn't have a real antagonist until Caius. Orphan and all that Fal'Cie stuff from the og FFXIII was cool and all, but the gravitas Caius created and how he was truly a cunning "villain" made him terrifying. The protagonists had no idea they were playing on a board already in checkmate, and I think THAT is what made him different from your textbook villain. While I don't want sympathetic villains all over the place, I do want smart ones, and he was definitely that. Plus dude, the guy is voiced by Liam O'Brien and is a total badass. There were certain things about his ideology that I understood, and some I agreed with, but in the end, the things he was willing to sacrifice to accomplish his goals were what cemented him as the villain. The craziest bit, is he knew he was the "bad guy". But it didn't change his motivations. When a villain is self-aware that what they're doing isn't "right" but still choose to do it anyway, is both impressive, and scary.
I don't know, but in my opinion Caius would do allusions to his own heart (Etro) where he feels empty, since it's not his own heart, but he doesn't care...since he still harbors feelings for someone special (Yeul) who wishes to protect or to find and doesn't matter he has to destroy in order to accomplish it. Maybe Sora asks why going that far having such feelings, a proof that somewhere he does have a heart somewhere, because as long as he cares for someone he can protect instead of choosing destruction. The chaos warrior could answer about how Sora's heart is still inmature to understand the complexity of its misteries and have a long way to understand his perspective.... Something like that. Just a quick thought.
I really love him.❤ The most saddest boss in the series.Once a hero drive by sadness desperate to do the crazies thing like destroy the time and space and the music is showed both sadness and craziness 😢
Why is Caius so foookin good? I wish FXIII and XIII-2 stories were mixed in just one game, it would be alot epic. But we wouldn't know much about Serah if so, but she could awake from Crystal mid game or something, idk.

I was about to go to the next song, no lies, then 04:33 happened. I'm here to stay now
I love this mix of caius's themes. He was an amazing villain it's a shame his fight in LR was not a long one and I wish we could have battled him more often. His themes are why I love him as a villain I would say he's a better villain than sephiroth due to his story of why he is doing what he's doing to save yeul.
I hate LR, and wathever that shit made to all the characters, only part i like in that game in Caius and Yeul's part.
***** I would like that too. But i would like Yuel and Caius to stay dead. Maybe even Serah, but i would like to see that marriage of hers.
We already fought him more times that any other boss in FXIII-2. I think only one fight in LR was enough(and that fight was a bitch)
@@juanlaise1059 he was spamming magic for every second in that battle, I mean what?!?!
The intro just makes you embrace the epicness
Amazingly done, and I feel bad for mentioning this, but there is technically one more. I *think* it's 4-16 on the XIII-2 soundtrack, but there's another Caius song that plays after the final battle when he confronts Serah and Noel.
Still, never mind that, this is absolutely incredible o.o
Would love to see final fantasy XIII trilogy remastered for the ps5. 🙏 Doesn't hurt to imagine. 🤷
ff13 -> ff13-2 -> ff13-3 -> Kingdom hearts 4
Nomura it's your job to finish this now.
Somnus never existed in the first place. The ost talks about the "somnus" of Bhunivelze.
Nomura, restore the Fabula Nova Crystallis and bring the myth to a proper and true conclusion so that we can finally see the true end of this wonderful dream.
@Peppe AMEN!!! 🙌👏👍
I fought this man over and over again just to enjoy his beautiful theme.
"The living don't need a God...but the dead do!"
?
but the dead too?
lol oopsie :P
@@louisehellyer9039 no it a quote from cauis to lighting I believe at the start of the etro temple or the end I forgot where but it from ffxiii-3 lighting returns
"...A god to protect them. A god of salvation."
I appreciate this video SO SO much! I play this during work while I get my paperwork finished soothing and intense all at once. Caius is one badass villain.
Caius is just something else amongst all FF characters.
Man, out of all the soundtrack videos out there, this one is my favourite because it's really well mixed with all Caius theme and it feels like one big battle against Caius, Besides 7 and Crisis Core, the 13 series is definitely up there for soundtrack for me
En eso estamos de acuerdo
It's been so long but I will never forget the impact Cauis and Noel's story had on me. It was honestly the last time I could remember a game making me feel something so timeless and sad. Peak antagonist writing, we miss moral ambiguity here.
This guy actually won
While Sarah and noel were trying to save the world they couldn't save yeul, caius wanted to destroy the world to free yeul from continues death and rebirth, to me that speaks volumes
I'd rather save 1 life of eternal death and rebirth than save the thousands of souls that weren't cursed like yeul
Yeah why square ?
Cool. There is Lightning And Caius have become my most favorite right there with sephiroth and a few others.
Pretty nice mix I must say. Very well done and with the perfect timing for each shift. That plus Caius' awesome theme songs make an even more awesome track. Again, very well done and keep it up.
Caius Ballad
The One True Guardian
Not to detract from the incredible mix of such incredible music, but that last bit with the personal reflection set to The Promise was so heartfelt.
I'm so thoroughly enjoying this mix, but at the same time it feels like I'm holding up a lighter but also ugly crying. I'm about two sad thoughts away from crying about Caius' whole story.
This mix reminds me the best of Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy! That's awesome!
This was totally on my birthday, man.
Pick you up for a date on Bahamut then? ;)
Did you really wait to ask me this until the day before my birthday, Caius?
It's your birthday today?
So you have two birthdays?
Black Wolf Hunter More like the vid was released on her birthday date.
You deserve all the likes you can get for this mix
Sephiroth crapped his pants listening to these songs.
I've always seen Caius as a fusion of Sephiroth and Kefka. The hopeless nihilism of Kefka who is driven not to rule but to destroy everything combined with the all-powerful tragic hero Sephiroth who is ultimately twisted by forces outside of his control.
As a special fan of the series i must say "what a tribute to this masterpiece! Thank u
The GOAT has arrived, bitches!!
My childhood i still love this fricken game to death💜so i came back to re live it
I love how Caius actually had good morals
This was EXACTLY what I was searching for. Thank you so much for posting. I'm now going to play it over every epic battle and moment in my fav final fantasy games
Edit: I’m sorry, I misspoke.
Absolutely phenomenal. If I could like this vid more than once, you'd have a thousand more likes.
2:31 honestly this is one of the best ‘tragic hero’ motifs in anything ever, and I love the way it conveys his tragic yet unyielding resolve.
almost all of this mix was flawless besides the little cut to the doomed soul song but besides that, it is an amazing piece/mix
Caius Vs. Sephiroth... I would LOVE to see that battle
I haven't heard this much Latin in an antagonist's theme song since VII.
I would love to see Sora vs Caius! Make it happen Kingdom Hearts. Make Caius a surprise boss in Kingdom Hearts. 👑❤️💗🌌🗡
Chris McCall HELL YES!!!!!
A secret boss and a playable character in the new Dissidia game.
@@Kleigen Brooooo that would be awesome in my opinion.
@@deemuh_7599 Caius would simply have to distort time to kill Sora.
The XIII has many flaws. The OST is not one of them. Caius' theme is probably one of my favourite songs of the entire saga
she is beautiful, and him tooo.
WHAT THE HECK, I'm surprised that there isn't a fanart of Caius and Sephiroth just chilling in the bad guy club.
Caius isn't a bad guy and he would've killed Sephiroth instead of befriending him.
He could be Sephis lil bro he is amazing and they both have killer themes! I can't desice who i love more! And this theme is just *faints*
Best antagonist ever!!! Best FF story ever!
Oh my gosh 0___0 So beautiful!!! my favorite part was 0:00 to 1:13 :D I could listen to that all day! I wish there was a download for that part.
Powerful classical score - you won't forget...
That transition from the followers of chaos to Heart of Chaos.
This is fucking beautiful. Thank you for this. The best theme for the best(in my opinion) character :)
FF games have some of the best ost.
Thank you for merging Caius Ballad's music :)
Thank you so much for this!
La musique est juste incroyable
I really love him.❤
The most saddest boss in the series.Once a hero drive by sadness desperate to do the crazies thing like destroy the time and space and the music is showed both sadness and craziness 😢
beautiful, thank you for making this mix
Starting at 1:46
*Do you love this!? Do you happy!? Now listen up! ->> Serah, Noel, all of you!*
Lol
You could do Barthandelus's theme. "Fighting Fate" from FFXIII 😄
10:18 starts my favorite part
Why is Caius so foookin good? I wish FXIII and XIII-2 stories were mixed in just one game, it would be alot epic. But we wouldn't know much about Serah if so, but she could awake from Crystal mid game or something, idk.
This is awesome.
I named my dog Caius. The loyal companion, through all of time. So glad I found this. It's amazing. It will serve as his theme.
BEST THEME EVER MADE FOR FINAL FANTASY!!!
I am going to rock out to this and various others on my birthday Wednesday to celebrate twenty five years a final fantasy fan.
Well Then Happy Birthday To Both Of You. Lol Lot Of People Have Birthdays In April Or Were Born The Same Year As Me. At Least I'm Not The Only One LOL
This game recently turned XIII so I came back to this remix to remember my favorite Villain!
Love this picture. Love this mix.
Great job.
Heart of chaos is good but unseen abyss is on another level 🔥🔥🔥🔥
This mix is just amazing! I have been really busy and I had almost completely forgotten about video games and XIII. This just made me want to play again. thank so much for that brother! I just have one question, do you think you can give us a download link? That would be amazing!
OMG!!! I am just seeing this today! You have made my day!!!
Simply perfect!
I’ll listen to this and play stranger of paradise because they got chaos in both music AND battle
He eats a roll at the end? It says "ending roll"
dammit, good sir, i was going to make this myself! but thank you anyway, its awesome :D
I love the end of this video
+Liang Cui the song at the end?
***** didnt see it,thanks
ardyn is basically caius and kefka mix
I very much like this tribute, thank you.
