Taimanov Variation ⎸Sicilian Defense Theory

  • The difference between the Taimanov, the Paulsen and the Kan is subtle, but it exists. The Taimanov is perhaps the most comfortable of all the e6 Sicilians for black to play.
Introduction to the Sicilian Defense: • Sicilian Defense (intr...
Kan Variation of the Sicilian: • Sicilian Kan ⎸Chess Op...
The Taimanov Variation is a subvariation in the Paulsen according to some, a different name for the Paulsen according to others, and some even think it’s a completely different opening. Paulsen Sicilian(s) are characterized by black having played e6 and white playing Nc3 after the central pawn exchange on d4. It can develop into the Taimanov, the Kan and many other minor sidelines within the Paulsen.
The variation was named after the great Soviet grandmaster Mark Taimanov. A world class chess player and a world class pianist as well. A versatile man with many interests. He played chess that way too. He was never given a label for playing one way or the other (like Karpov, Petrosian or Tal have). He played chess the way he wanted to. This variation was probably his biggest contribution to chess theory.
The Taimanov is characterized by the moves
    1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 e6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nc6
    5. Nc3 Qc7 - once again, not everyone agrees on this. Some think think it’s Taimanov immediately after Nc3. The position continues with:
    6. Be3 a6 7. Qd2 Nf6 8. O-O-O - white approaches this position similarly to the dragon. A quick kingside attack and long castling, with a simple goal of putting pressure on black as soon as possible. Black will, on the other hand try to create initiative on the queenside and castle short.
    The main line continues with:
    8...Bb4 9. f3 Ne5 10. Nb3 b5 11. Qe1 Be7 12. f4 Ng6
    13. e5 Ng4 14. Ne4 O-O 15. Bc5 Bb7 16. h3 Nh6

AS a black player, this is my main line in the Sicilian Defense...I really have been playing that variation for many, many years in online Blitz games. Like many variations in the Sicilian Defense it is tactically shaped so to speak and you can have have much tactical fun with it, especially in Blitz games.
BTW: Keep up, your brilliant work, Stjepan. Your instructive videos did help me out A LOT in my (theoretical) opening preparation.
    Cheers from Germany...)

I don't think the Bishop retreat to E7 is correct until White invests further tempi to unpin his Knight. A6 before NF6 is also a bit "meh" because the NB5 lines are better for Black and you're just preventing them from playing a worse line. A major advantage of the move order over the board is going for the Schvenigen while avoiding the Keres, so holding off on A6 gives Black more transpositional possibilities while fiddling with the Queenside pieces first makes White reveal a plan.

    • @henryeberman6342

White is threatening Nxb5 after Qe1 so to avoid that black plays Be7 it’s not about the pin or anything like that

For people in the 850-1000 range, I found putting the black bishop on C2 early in the game will develop into a checkmate once the White King castles. Usually you can walk it over there within the first 5-10 moves and eventually put the queen on D3. 90% of people miss what's happening and you can score easy games.

What is the difference between positional play vs tactical play

    • @mustaphad1319
      @mustaphad1319 6 лет назад +6

Positional play has to deal with knowing where to put your pieces while stopping your opponent. For example putting your bishop on a long diagonal using the knight to block pawns and beating others in endgames. They tend to find small combos after building these small advantages to win Kramnik Carlsen Karpov Capablanca and many others were positional/strategical players. Tactical play is more like Tal Kasparov Anand Polgar Morphy. They dont care as much about slow build ups to create advantages. They will calculate very deeply and explosively to win a piece after a sacrifice or a checkmating attack. They ask positional players does your small advantage matter if you might be checkmated soon? Alekhine and Bobby Fischer are good examples of a mix between the two.

Positional play is planning ahead and improving squares and pieces on the board, while at the same time considering ways to prevent your opponent from doing the same thing. For example, you might create a plan of a queenside minority attack which would weaken the c6 pawn and give you an outpost on the c5 square for your knight. That would be a positional approach to a position. Conversely, tactical play would be you thinking about combinations which could either win material, create an attack or do something else. They're most often checks, captures or forcing moves which require calculation. The truth is that you can't really go with one approack. You have to think both positionally and tactically on each move in order to understand the position and to play a good move. Hope this helps!:)
