I usually just make a build fast in PoB, seek similar builds from the web, compare mine to theirs and try to look what choices they went with and how those compares to mine. Then I mix my abomination with their build.
My friends told me when I started "You're going to play Path of Building more than you play Path of Exile"
they got stuck in the loop, to avoid this... get drunk and level a new character in hardcore using only normal & magic items, no rare or uniques allowed - shits crazy amounts of fun haha

my friend only makes builds he get to tier1-2 see the build would need investment and remake a build he never got past yellow maps
then hes like iv never dropped a single exalt in 7 years but duh he makes more builds than he plays

I created a storm brand build (which became a shock nova brand build later) with skitterbots and herald of Thunder. The idea being that every enemy would trigger herald of Thunder because they were all shocked.
I told path of building that all my enemies were shocked and chilled always (which is true).
It kept recommending hypothermia as the main damage support gem. And I'm here thinking... But I'm not dealing cold damage.
Then I actually read the damned thing (after ignoring it for a week) and it deals 20% bonus damage to chilled enemies - which they are always chilled. So I get to abuse skjtternots even more
Tldr; path of building is great.

Been using POB for a few leagues and only moved to the fork this week to look at impale and wow its way better
i feel like the one thing i would like to see with these is going through some early skills players can use and make a build and examples on builder of how those would look like for some examples and going through how you cal damage on those different set ups so players have an idea on how they could try to do that for their own builds
Ive watched tons of build making videos and then tried and then failed many times. This conversation actually covers the usual reasons why builds fail and not just the usual advice. They also cover SSF specific stuff too
and ill say if it wasnt for content creators like you guys who have been doin this for a long long time i wouldnt have learned as fast. so thank you!
The base crit from assassin allows the explo chest to crit, scale that with the insane crit from power charges the assassin chest does way more damage with crits than chieftain ever will

I pick a skill gem & Ascendancy that compliments it & go from there. My awareness of Defensive layering & mana management methods is pretty high though.

I'd recommend to anyone new to the game, to play trade league.
First, you get to learn how to trade, like literally learning how to post items for sale and learning how to buy items on poe trade.
Second, you get to explore more of the items that exist in game, which means you get to say to yourself I like that item or that item. So, if you want to start SSF later, you have some knowledge of the items that exist and that can be gained through div cards that you want to base your character on.
also you can basically play ssf but poke your nose out for items you want.
ssf is basically for bragging right anyway.

on poe ninja i would suggest sorting by delve depth, because those builds need good enough defense and dmg, so the dps inflation isnt as bad
Just go to hcssf, pick pobs there, open, respec some points from hp to damage nodes and that's it. Delve builds like 1hp 37es flaskfinder are not very useful for a normal sane mapping person.
That only works early on, imo. Deep delvers go to zero defense (no life, es, def nodes at all) builds quite soon into depth ~700-1000

Great vid ziz and nugi. Gave me a few ideas for builds. Im a veteran player (last played in abyss, returning to heist). Im mostly a solo player and was wondering if you could make one of these for making a boss killer vs clear and maybe how to level a boss killer effectively. I want a boss killer for echo of the atlas and im not sure what nodes necessarily more important for a bosser over a clear. Thanks for making these :)

Just to note. I spend my first 700+ hours of POE making my own builds and got nowhere. Thats why i started using others :x So failure is not an option!

Nugiyen at the begging of the video: "Yes, I agree defense is more important than damage for a new player."
Nugiyen at the end of the video: "I think a new player should focus on damage. There is nothing worse than not having enough damage."
both points are true though... if you canèt kill anything, then defense is basically useless since you'll be hit way more by enemies. but if you advance to endgame and have no defenses, you will pop even by getting hit by a couple of enemies. so at the end of the day, defense is more important, but you can't have defense without having offense
@@davidsearle5817 I wasn't attempting to be critical of Nugiyen. I was attempting to point out how arbitrary many of these types of discussions are. Baeclast or any POE discussion devolves when it creates an order of importance. Order of importance is irrelevant. It's the interaction of the variables that produce a particular mechanical state within the mathematics of the game.
Honestly this was an amazing video. Biggest take away from me was learning about Dark Arts and how easy it is to grab a bunch of movespeed and cast speed and movement skill recovery time. Im excited to be able to shave 30 minutes or more off my time to maps this league.
New player here. I tend to lean towards tanky characters while my friend deals the majority of the damage in most games we play. what are some recommended gems/ascendancies for me? i read juggernaut was prolly my best bet.
Not sure who these guides are for. Feels like this was for people who allready know alot of shit. Ziz you speak so fast, dont explain what you doing on the talent tree, and jumps all over the place. This Nugi guy atleast spoke slowly and tried to explain some. Was looking forward to this guide! I really wanna try make my own build this leauge, but sadly i didnt learn much here :( maybe it was just me.
it's just you. No one can start making builds without enough experience. If you are a new player and want to make a build but need lots of explanation for in-game mechanics because you are discovering them, you should follow a guide and play the game until you know enough about it. This guide is not for brand new players who don't know basics, it explains how to make a build.
It's for people who have enough knowledge about the game to make a build and don't know where to start.
@@blobagibo if i scroll down the comments it seems it not just me. I done all tier maps, killed sirus, tried most of the content. But whatever. I like ziz as a youtuber and watch alot of his content. I just think this wasnt that good.

The best "POB warrior" I saw was someone who had taken ambush and assassinate from the assassin ascendancy. Then ticked both the "is the enemy on full life" and "is the enemy on low life" to inflate the damage numbers.
Made me chuckle.
Plan your transition states folks, it may be viable early game and late game, but being able to transition from one to the other might be an absolute killer. I only play one character a league so the good and bad experiences I've had with builds really stick out to me -- and I can say that for me nothing sucks more than playing a build that is godly all through acts and into early endgame and then just falls off a cliff without a massive gear improvement. It can be very difficult to foresee this type of problem in a build even reading through forum posts because all the no-lifers ahead of everyone in a league get their top of the line gear, blast through the late end-game bosses and report back how awesome the build is, then it takes a few weeks into the league for plebs to start showing up in the posts to start complaining about having problems advancing past a certain point. Then, to compound the issue, those plebs quit for the season or move on to another build, meanwhile those top players who crushed it are the ones who stick around with the build and are in the thread at the beginning of next season to only tell newcomers the good things about the build when the next season comes around and the cycle repeats itself. I know of at least two builds that are still updated on the forums to today that bait plebs into playing them and then crush their dreams when they get to the mid-to-late endgame.
dont think thats really the fault of the build imo, but outta curiosity can u show what two builds you're referring to? i think its mainly that the casual players just make common mistakes and/or dont know how to scale their items properly (no life or damage rolls are a basic example) rather than the builds being inherently flawed. Build guides are meant to be followed a bit loosely, and its unreasonable to think it should be able to carry you all the way to late endgame without the player having to put in effort to learn how to scale his own items.
cant you just buy tabula and use raging spirit or spark to quickrun naked through act1-5?

hi ziz i wanted to give u a sincere feedback: even thou i really like the idea of tutorial video i think this series even thou is generaly useful lacks on structure. Even thou i dont mind long video th etopics jumps all over the palce and there is no real "ending" on an argument. Gl ty for video anyway
I agree with this. The PoE University series lacks structure and logical layout imo, and thus doesn't offer much to the newer player. For eg, I get Nugi's point that your build should balance offence, defence and mobility. But no tips are offered on how to achieve this. For me, a logical starting point would be to advise people to get at least +150% Life on their passive tree, or ES if they're going that route. That is a tip that even the most rank noob can follow.
As you say, the topics just jump around and result in an impromptu conversation between veteran players that doesn't really offer much to noobs. I think it would help if Ziz made a list of bullet points that he wanted to address with each topic, and then worked through them systematically, ensuring that each point is covered thoroughly and concludes with simple practical advice before moving on to the next. It should also follow the teaching principle of moving from the known to the unknown, never suddenly introducing the unknown without context or introductory explanation. That is guaranteed to lose the newer player and leave them frustrated, feeling they haven't learned anything.
Teaching is not something you can do in an ad hoc manner, the lesson content and flow needs to be planned and structured. Being able to play the game well is one thing, being able to teach effectively is another. It's an almost universal trait in PoE that 'instructional videos' are anything but instructional.

@@porous9 also have you ever played kaye's spectre summoner or seen her videos? I love the way she breaks everything down. I definitely think you and gio hit the hammer on the head with the comments. Its just tons of information to not have a lot of structure.
@@boochvans I've played Kay's Spectre Summoner. And a big reason I played it is because her vids are so clear and logical and thorough. Another great build maker is Esoro. His video guides are top notch - clear, simple, easy to follow, and they go from A to Z without missing anything or leaving you confused about any aspect of the build or how it works.
If I had the PoE knowledge, I'd definitely make videos for new players. I'm a writer by profession. Taking complex technical subjects, breaking them down to a level the public can understand, and then laying it all out in a clear logical A-Z flow is what I do for a living. Alas, I lack the PoE knowledge to do it. But I can certainly pinpoint where instructional videos go wrong and leave the audience confused.

For early yellows? Yes. As long as you don't run rippy mods this is fine. Also, assuming around 5k life, capped resists and some semi-well rolled flasks.
i want to go wintertide brand in the next league ssf first time
Occultist has great cold DoT scaling, but wintertide brand really feels nice when you have a lot of cast speed so you might look at Trickster instead. (I'm probably starting Vortex Cold DoT occultist, so I looked into wintertide brand and if I wanted to main skill that instead) Either way, it seems like it will be very easy to gear a character like that in SSF, so good luck exile!
honestly mostly problem with poe have been in every league the fact, that ggg have done little for the game to work on different type of pc's so that it wont give spikes, no problem running perfect graphics and stream on same pc but still i die here and there coz i just get random spikes that will give me disconnect or some other crap that never happens in other games.
after switching to vulkan I definitely get a lot less spikes, even opening legions.

I know im super late in the game and started end of 2019 then skipped 2020.
I know there will be better builds and i dont have the experience as the veterans.
Honestly if the world ends and i have one game to play, it will be PoE offline.(impossible but yeah)
I can stop feeling insecure and given enough time and boredom, i might make a build that does feel unique to me since i dont know much about the game.
Speaking of my onw experience, when I've first started playing I didn't follow any guide and had no idea what I was doing (see for yourself, character name is Leneiar, a lvl 48 occultist www.pathofexile.com/account/view-profile/leneiar/characters ). In a way it was a horrible experience, because there was so much stuff thown at me, all the loot, all the skills, the passive tree... When the next league started (betrayal) I've decided to follow a guide, but now to hold my hand, just to see what I needed in terms of skills, passives and gear, and changed things here and there that I thought would be better for my playstyle (sometimes it worked out great, many other times not so much). But I've learned a lot with this, and it made my experience in game so much more enjoyable, because I was doing something that I wanted and created "myself". I'm no expert in any way, I have a little bit less than 1k hours played over a few years, I still suck at crafting and price-checking, but I have fun my way

The problem with making your own build is re-rolling that character. It's demotivating to know you spent so much on a character only to re-roll because it's shit and it's even worse when you didn't farm jack shit with it because now you have to make a new character on, possibly, less currency than the failed one. It feels much better to re-roll when you've made a successful character even if it's not "yours" aka from a guide. My only successful builds were Juggernaut, Champion, Gladiator type builds, but those are easy to make and hard to actually fuck up.

I wanna add that on Softcore PoeNinja is NOT a good place to get builds from ... you can use it for inspiration of course. The reason is twofold:
-Nothing on poe ninja indicates skill or that it's a good build. It's only about level. So a lot of builds on there (especially in sc) are shit to mediocre.
-"Sort it by dps". Poe Ninja cannot calculate dps accurately. A lot of it is inflated or requires very bothersome to impossible setup on bosses. For clearing the dps doesn't matter either.
So in summation ... DO NOT use poe ninja to get builds in SC. In HC it's a different story since there people actually have to survive to make it onto poe ninja.
While Nugi looks like a very knowledgeable guy, throughout the video it looks like he is hating his life and would rather be doing anything else at all, which makes it very uncomfortable to watch. He seems to have a very hard time vibing off of Zizaran which is somewhat what Ziz spends a lot of time trying to make happen and it feels very awkward like Nugi can't wait for the video to end.

you can make any build work even when its nerfed..... there is so much content and ways to build your character in this game... we have so many different gems now i dont see how u can make a crap build in todays POE
