In this one, we’re talking about the five things that makes (in my opinion) a good outdoor light-painting picture. We also talk about burning clouds we got that night over the White Sands, and a timelapse we did a the very end of the night. Do you agree that number 5 is the most important one?
1- Balanced exposure
Always exposing for the background, and trying to keep a little bit of semi-transparency inside the light-painting shape. This makes the art blends well with the scenery which adds a touch of authenticity.
2- Perfect shape
Tracing light-painting shapes that match the subject is one of the hardest aspect of this technique, but sticking to simple ones is always a great way to start. Circles and doors are easy to do. Then some other shapes can be more complicated, but very rewarding when everything aligns correctly.
3- Color Matching - including white balance
Color matching: Using the right tube color based on the actual scene can make a big difference in the overall feeling of an image. There are no hard rules here of course, but these are some combinations I enjoy a lot:
- A white tube at the beginning of the blue hour
- An orange or a sugar tube in the middle of the blue hour
- A warm (CTO) tube with the stars or the Milkyway when using a very cold white balance value
4- Overall composition
On the field, I want to make sure I compose properly with either the glow of the blue hour, the clouds, the trees, or anything that would complement the main subject in the frame. And there are the obvious points: having the twirl leading to the empty space, having Kim look on the right direction, getting balanced sky/ground ratio, etc.
5- Magic
This is probably the most important point. This is about the layer way above the technique. This is when everything aligns perfectly and suddenly, you get a massive reward from the elements. But the only way to make the magic happens is to increase the odds of getting to it. The more we go out, the more we’re likely to receive this unpredictable gift.

I have missed videos like this of you two doing what I fell in love with years ago. Because of your videos my wife and I have had a lot of fun over the years going out and seeing what we can create. We don't have access to the amazing locations you do I think, but we make do with what we have. Thank you for the inspiration and, please, more of these basic, beautiful, and inspirational videos. Take care

awesome work my brother!
Wow inspiring. Thank you ❤
Hi Eric. How do you choose a right location for shooting? Maybe you can make a video about this :) Thank you.
An unrelated question besides your marvelous pictures, make camp in the locations until the next sunrise or go back to a comfy bed?
it depends :)
we love both. We do a lot of camping, but sometimes it's more efficient to get a comfy bed :P
Halo of bishop
Would you continue to do this even if the images were only temporary - magically disappearing after a few days? is it the process or the product that drives you?
To answer the last question: both. That goes together.
The "product" is the art piece that forms our long time body of work. It's the long road (see episode 211 ruclips.net/video/Q9M1-bX2AzA/видео.html)
The "experience" is part of the process. I wouldn't make art solely on a computer. I need to be out in nature. That's how I decided to build my life.
@@Ericpare I understand. I feel like you are similar to me in that you would still enjoy the experience even without a final image but you wouldn’t really enjoy the image without the experience of making it.
Totally agree!!💗🖤😊
Hey @Ericpare - How long are your tubes in cm in this Video? Thank you very much for your reply :)
104cm + 14cm (long + small connected via the extender). We explain everything here ruclips.net/video/s3ckNRJOwr0/видео.html 😁😁
@@Ericpare + Feather or Sprinkler? :)
@@hochzeitsfotograf.dominik not in this video
@@Ericpare But in general? Long Tube + Extender (mini Tube) + Feather/Sparkler? :)
@@hochzeitsfotograf.dominik I usually skip the mini tube when I use the feather or sparkler
