  • Emma Thompson received her Golden Globe award for the screenplay of Sense and Sensibility. She payed homage to Jane Austen by giving her acceptance speech as if it was a reflection on the evening by Jane herself.

It's great because she won the award for adapting a screenplay and then proved with this speech how much she deserved it.

I think a lot of people forget, or perhaps don't realize, that she was originally a comedienne. She started out with the illustrious likes of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie - who are also commonly recognized, at least in America, as more serious dramatic actors than comedians, but who also began their careers in something more akin to sketch comedy than Jane Austen, V for Vendetta, House, and that ilk - in comedy, in the Footlights at Cambridge. She is indeed very funny!

I remember coming across magazines with B&W photos of her uni days with the boys - before the internet.
What I didn't know was that S&S was her very first attempt at a screenplay. To win both the Oscar & Golden Globe on a first try also speaks to her brilliance.

Best speech ever! When she won at the Academy Awards later, I wished she'd saved this speech for then, but I guess she couldn't risk it since she may not have won a second time.

I think she wouldn't have the time to do it at the Oscars. People barely have the time to thank their parents and the music cuts them off 😂 But you're right, it would have been EPIC!
