  • Indonesia ranks as one of the world's biggest contributors to ocean plastics, many of which come from rivers. The local nonprofit Sungai Watch saves about 3 metric tons of trash from entering the ocean every day with simple barriers and manual labor. We visited the island of Bali to meet the three young siblings behind the nonprofit and learn why a tropical paradise has a huge trash problem.

When I was in Bali in 2007, a woman was dumping foam pear-protecting sheaths into the storm drain. I said "You know that drains to the ocean, yes". "Yes, I know!" she replied with a smile. A few days later I was on a ferry to Lombok. A father with his young kids were picking aluminum and plastic out of the garbage cans. "Recycling!" I thought. "What a good father!". Then I watched him throw the bottles and cans overboard, just so his small children could watch them float away. There is no fixing this without fixing the culture.

I studied industrial design and engineering specialising in innovation and there was a total of about 20 minutes on 'Cradle to grave' design, which means to know where it goes in the end so you design with that in mind, universities and schools NEED to embed this thought process throughout teaching anything in relation to product creation, it is not the individual who buys the products whole responsibility, it is totally on the designers and companies who ignore the end of their products life.

Instead, they will include more efficient designs that save money through better shapes causing better transport costs (for example), making plastic no longer the cheaper option.

I bought a pair of Indosole flipflops after seeing the video on reusing old car tyres. I must say they are by far the best flip flops I have had in terms of comfort, and durability, the ones I got look classy too. I liked the blend of the company using recycled materials combined with ethical labour practices combined with the fact it is made in Indonesia. On holiday in Oman I ended up the flipflops instead of shoes/ boots to walk many Kilometres a day and didn't get any blisters. I even abseiled down a waterfall with them (not a smart move I know, but I didn't have any other footwear with me that I wanted to get wet).

I've seen both wealthy and poor people throwing their trash in the river or on the road. The funniest thing is every rainy season, when their beaches are full of trash, they keep saying, "IT'S FROM JAVA." Well, that could be true, but the locals in Bali aren't helping the situation either.
The Balinese government has been taking money from each tourist coming to the island, and where does all that money go? No one knows.

    我们都知道伤心时,很难去想开心,所以当下心情就享受那过程,把伤心转换成正面心情。很多事发生了都已成为过去,享受的事会增加,因为你的思维已经转换享受开心。

The issue with the trash issue in Indonesia is mostly the mentality of the people, but also the lack of recycling system& & infrastructure from the govt. sure some places have segregated bins for recycling, but that doesn’t matter if they will all end up in the same dump truck as one big pile of trash to chuck at the landfill. It’s all lip service, and our politicians are well-versed in the art of bullshit.
Note that all the initiatives in the vid are led by westerners. If it’s by a local, most do not have or will not spend the resources to take it to the factory level.
This is also only Bali, the most well-known place for westerners in Indonesia. The situation outside Bali is generally worse due to the lack of westerners.

The first time I stayed in Candidasa in Bali, the water was so clean and clear. It was a scuba diving spot.
The last time I went, the sea was full of trash. It was all around my legs as I walked along the edge. Ugh! I couldn't stand it!

Balinese villages up the stream always loved to brag about how clean their villages are. This is one major way how they achieve that. Dumping it to the river. But not done as a community act, but as individuals. Imagine you have hundreds of thousand of people up stream doing this daily from a simple candy packaging to house hold trash. Watch for some guy or lady drive a scooter with trashes dangling on the bike, and you will see them going to the nearest river that is not in their village and merrily tossing the rubbish. They wont do it the their own river so they dont get to feel bad or caught. I have seen this since 80’s.

a noble goal reusing plastic and making it into something new i see a lot of companies doing that but it doesn't eliminate the problem you're still creating more stuff

We can all help by taking cold drinks in stainless steel flasks wherever we go instead of buying bottled in plastic drinks. Everyone can do at least that and the drinks stay cold or hot. Well done siblings for all your efforts.

You know what you should do! You should get some engineers or have a contest were the goal is to make a full sett of garden furnitures in the same style as the lounge chair. When you have a three seater , a two seater pluss a chair you make a manual for assembly than flatpack it like Ikea and start shipping it to other countries.❤ If these solutions you make for your company is 100% recycled materials you could make a big market providing pots, gardetools were you use the wood you find as handles.

Making chairs is the better choice in my opinion. Recycled plastics, if not even downcycled due to mixing different kinds of plastics into mixtures that are then not recyclable on their own, are often less stable than the primary material. While this is not the main problem, abrasion becomes more critical. Shoe soles lose microplastics due to abrasion. The worse the quality of the plastics, the more. By solving one problem, they are potentially creating another one. Same with all the other plastic ‘recycling’ enterprises, that are downcycling the materials to products of a primitive design that just shift the problem elsewhere. Chairs on the other hand are better, because you can think of a take-back and recycling system after their use (which probably won’t happen with the sandals) and truly close the cycle.

Why is trash such a huge problem in indonesia/india? I never saw a dirty river that goes across the city here in Poland, like ever. Sure, some small ones on the outskirts can get dirty, but it`s because someone, one or two guys, dump their sht in there, not a whole bloody village!

A noble effort I'm sure, but it doesn't solve the problem with microplastics - which these recycled products will still release. We need to get rid of plastic permanently in most sectors and find different materials.

If you don’t know how, it is very easy. You just wash them then melt them. As long as the plastics are compatible.
